Spelling Ideas
There a some really fun ideas out there to teach your children how to spell.
My children each have a spelling box. Which is an index card box. Each time I see in writing or just a new word we want to learn we put it in our index box. Then daily I read the words and they write them either on the computer, a wipe board or chalk board. Sometimes we get creative as you will see below. Each time my children spell the work correctly we put the date or a sticker on the back of the index card. We like stickers. We usually go through and she reads the words first. Then I take the stack and they spell them. After 4 times of spelling it correctly they get to take the word from the box. They love that part. Here are some more ideas to try.
1. Pocket chart- use any kind of chart or cardboard word board to post the words for the week. You want your children to see the words .
2. Pretend you are a cheerleader. If when writing the letter of a word it goes above the line such as h then they raise their arms. If it is a middle letter such as a they put their hands on their hips. If it is below the line such as j they touch their feet.
3. Try to use the words as often as you can. Have them write them in sentenses.
4.Put some shaving cream in a pan and have them spell in the cream
5. No mess fingerpaint bags- Freezer safe zip lock bags. Put in some fingerpaint. Zip shut I like to duct tape the top for added protection . Voila no mess spelling but fun.
6. Flannel board practice. You can create a flannel board with felt and cardboard.
7. Use scrabble tiles or alpha bits cereal or magnetic letters
8. Type words on the computer
9. Use pipe cleaner to form words.
10. Our personal favorite. Get a large pc. of butcher paper or write all the letter in chalk outside. Have the kids hop , jump or run to the letters to spell the word.
