Special Words for Special Needs ~ NATHHAN and Ketchup!
1:33 AM, Dec. 11, 2006
I received my NATTHAN/CHASK Fall/Winter Newsletter today in the mail. For those of you who don’t know about NATTHAN/CHASK, it is The National Challenged Homeschoolers Christian Homes and Special Kids organization. Their website address is www.NATHHAN.org. The purpose of NATHHAN is “To encourage homeschooling families with special needs children in ways that glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. To find Christian homes for children with special needs.” I love getting their newsletter! I gain such encouragement from it and I wear my copy out!

The only bad thing is the ads in the magazine made my Christmas list longer! I definitely have the ‘wantsies, ’as the kids put it! There is a newspaper for individuals with special needs and beginning readers called News-2-You. I also discovered another publisher of materials to be used with special needs children: Brookes Publishing. I visited their site at www.brookespublishing.com and my reading wish list is now much longer. The only drawback to the whole thing is that though I may have the ‘wantsies’, I don’t have the ‘wantsie-bucks. (Yes, we often have strange names for things at our house.) But I think we all have that problem, don’t we? One freebie that I found while surfing the web is from www.goaskmom.com - Who Put the Ketchup in the Medicine Cabinet. I signed up for the email mailing list called An Ounce of Ketchup. Here is the description from their website: Is This Your Kid?
He loses stuff. She stares into space. He takes hours to do simple chores. Homework never ends. One day she makes A's and the next fails the same subject. He's the personification of disorganization. But he's not hyperactive. And she really isn't a discipline problem. Still, last week you found the ketchup in the medicine cabinet. Maybe it's ADHD Inattentive.Labeled lazy, unmotivated, or maybe just a little bit 'slow', these children often fall through the cracks. Yet perhaps, just like their hyperactive classmates, there is a chemical imbalance in their brain that is causing them to not pay attention. They aren't lazy, or unmotivated, and they're certainly not stupid. Many of these children have what is called Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Inattentive type. It's like a wire is not quite connected in their brain. Lots of children have ADHD, but most of them have hyperactivity along with inattention. As a result, the main focus of most publications on ADHD is on children who have hyperactivity and/or impulsivity along with the inattention. This website is dedicated to the parents of children who endear themselves to us with their creativity, humor, good nature, and spontaneity, yet infuriate us with their inability to stay organized and on task. We know lots of kids like this, because we live with them. We love them, and we want them to reach their potential. Since there aren't a lot of places dedicated to ADHD/Inattentive, we started this website, and named it "Who Put the Ketchup in the Medicine Cabinet?". We offer information, ideas, product recommendations, and an opportunity to meet other kids like yours. We hope this website will help you as you help your children learn to help themselves. YES…THIS IS MY KID!!!!
I loved exploring their site. There are practical tips and book recommendations, (yes, more books to add to my reading wish list!) The weekly email list gives updates on how to keep ADHD kids focused, organized, encouraged and successful! We could definitely use that around our house. I am always on the lookout for more ways to help our son. I only wish that I could have had some of these web resources when he was younger. So much for Christmas wish lists---They extend throughout the year. There is always more to find on the web when it comes to finding things to help us teach our special needs children. ~Next week I’ll be posting about some blogs that I find inspirational when it comes to special needs homeschooling. Some days I REALLY need to know that others are going through the same things that I am going through! If you have one you would like to share, please email me and let me know!~ Remember to laugh while baking those Christmas cookies with your kids! Janice Janice is a homeschooling mom of two, who tries to keep her good sense of humor even on days when it is really had to do so. She feeds the son's dog, changes the daughter's cat's litter box and teaches a mean Algebra lesson! She still hasn't acquired the gift of bilocation-but she is working on it. Comments
