Astronomy: Trivium Applied
Our family enjoyed watching, Astronomy 101. It’s a family adventure and a beginner’s guide to the night sky. It explains how to use the star wheel, a circular map of stars, also called planisphere. It shows what stars are in the sky and where to find them.
The word astronomy is taken from the Greek root astron, which means star, and nomos, which means arrangement (law). Knowing the parts of the name is the Grammar stage. Understanding their arrangement is the logic stage. In the Rhetoric stage, you are able to make notations on where and how to find the arrangement of the stars.
Astronomy is the branch of Physics that studies celestial bodies and the universe as a whole.
This science, like so many of the other sciences, are easier to understand when applying the Trivium. Astronomy. It cannot be considered a stand along science, because it overlaps with a number of other fields, like: mathematics, biology, physics, geology and chemistry.
Understanding the parts that make up the whole of astronomy is a good place to start.
In a nut shell, the parts of Astronomy include:
- Celestial bodies
- Their magnitudes
- Motions
- Distances
- Periods or revolution
- Aspects
- Eclipses
- Order
- Observations made with instruments
- Mathematical calculations
Astronomy Note-taking is explained HERE http://www.siowl.com/index.html?notesThe author on that site writes:
One of the most overlooked pieces of equipment beside the telescope is the observing notebook. Today so few amateur observers keep decent notes at the telescope. When I talk to novices I try to reinforce the advantages of keeping a notebook.
