“And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” Isaiah 58:11
Doesn’t that sound like the most wonderful promise? I sure could use some of that!
Isaiah chapter 58 talks about the kind of life that will bring about that promise. It talks about a fasting of our own ways and turning our focus towards others.
The fast God delighted in was very practical in its outreach. It was to “loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free.” It goes on to talk about feeding the hungry, bringing the poor to your house, and covering the naked. It also talks about taking away from us the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity. Finally, we are called to satisfy the afflicted soul.
That’s quite a calling, but it comes with quite a promise. I think all of us here at The Old Schoolhouse and HomeschoolBlogger have been given some of those tasks with this ministry in which we are a part, as well as in our own neighborhoods and communities.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget just why we are doing what we are doing. May we only do His bidding, then we will receive His promise of guidance and our souls will be satisfied in Him. God's kind of fasting does indeed make your soul fat. ~ dlw
