My New Year’s Resolution last year was to become a better housekeeper.  I went on flylady.com and printed out her list of duties for each day.  While that might be a very organized thing to do, it doesn’t work if you never pull down the notebook from off the top of the refrigerator and find out what it says.

Needless to say, I never used the notebook, so I don’t know if it was a good system of not.  It didn’t work for me, I’ll put it that way.  Here’s what does work for me and maybe you’ll find some tips, too.  If you know how to do it better or have some housecleaning tips, please comment so we can learn from each another.

I don’t make a lot of time to clean the house.  I can’t say I don’t have a lot of time, because I seem to have a lot of time for the things I truly like to do.  So, I’ll be honest here.  My housecleaning tips require little work.  Here goes:

My time savers: 

• Get bleach tablets for the toilets so you don’t have to clean them as often.
• Keep Clorox Wipes under the sink in each bathroom for quick wipes.  Whenever you notice the countertop or toilet bowl needs wiping, it’s easier to do it when they are convenient.
• Spray a shower spray, like Tilex in a tile shower; no wiping is necessary.  I keep the spray in the shower.
• Stick a dishwasher cleaning tablet in a filled-up whirlpool tub and turn on the jets.  The jet action will clean your tub without your having to scrub.
• Use a cordless broom; they are faster to use than sweeping and you don’t have to use a dustpan.
• Put bags in every trash can so it will be easy to pick up the trash when it is full.  This keeps the can clean, too.
• Furniture polish wipes are convenient to use while I’m in the room watching TV or teaching school.  I use them as I see dust.
• I clean best when talking on the phone.  It gives me something to do while I’m doing the boring tasks.
• Encourage children to help with tasks daily.  Post chores weekly and have them rotate so they aren't stuck doing the same things every day.
