Beginning Lapbooking
Part 2
As a co-owner and writer/researcher for In the Hands of a Child, the Premier Supplier of Ready-to-Assemble Lapbooks, I am asked a lot of questions about lapbooking. Many people have heard the term “lapbooking” but have no idea what it is or are overwhelmed by the entire concept of hands-on activities and unit studies.Lapbooks are great ways to include hands-on activities to your student’s curriculum! This week, I am going to answer two more of the most frequently asked questions I hear about lapbooking.
What supplies do I need to start lapbooking with my students? The great thing about lapbooks is that you do not have to run out and purchase special supplies. Most people have the supplies they need right around the house.Basic supplies needed to lapbook include:
File folders
Paper in variety of colors and weights (cardstock, 24#)
Crayons, pencils, markers, paints
Adhesive- double stick tape, glue, glue sticks
Stapler and staples
Paper punch
Optional items like stickers, magazine clippings, and other embellishments
I have all my supplies together, what is next? The best way to begin is to organize the materials and supplies your student will need to complete his or her lapbook. To prepare a lapbook project for your student that uses 10 key concepts, follow these steps:
- Choose a topic to study
- Write down 10 key concepts you want your student to learn about this particular topic (you may have to do your research first in order to find 10 concepts)
- Do your research! It is important for you, the parent/teacher to find out the correct information related to the concepts you want your student to learn.Write down brief information about each of the 10 concepts.
- Now it is time to begin creating the mini books and projects.Create one activity for each of the 10 concepts you have chosen.Activities you might design include mini file folders, mini books, pockets, puppets, etc.It is a good idea to write down an idea for a mini book as you find it in your research.
- The final step is to work with your student to create a lapbook.Depending on the age/skill level of your student, you may be able to hand your student the concepts and have the student work alone, or you may need to work right with the student for each step.
There are many online resources that can help you create mini books and graphics for your student’ lapbooks including:
Katie Kubesh is co-owner and writer/researcher for In the Hands of a Child.Recognizing that hands-on projects are essential to the learning experience, In the Hands of a Child has created Project Packs that go beyond the hands-on aspect. They have taken the preparation time out of the parent/teacher job description with Complete Ready to Assemble Lapbook-style units that are available in printed book or ebook formats. Please visit their website at www.handsofachild.com.

Most parents and educators agree that the hands-on approach is the best way to teach a student, but many say they just do not have the extra time needed to include hands-on activities in their curriculum when they are trying to keep a household or classroom running. That is why In the Hands of a Child has created Ready-to-Assemble Project Packs! To introduce you and your student to lapbooking, In the Hands of a Child is offering a FREE project pack titled The Moon. This 74-page project pack is complete with a 14-page research guide and 20 hands-on activities to help your student complete a lapbook of the Moon.Simply visit www.handsofachild.com/shop and order the Moon Ebook.

I really would love to try lapbooking but when I went to order the free moon ebook from their website it said that the coupon had expired Jan.19th. Did I miss it?

In the Hands of a Child is working on this little issue with their shopping cart, so please check back in a bit. We'll get it worked out :) Thanks, everyone, for your patience!

I just did it and chose check/money order for my payment option and it worked just fine. I had gotten the error message when I left the payment on credit card.
I absolutely love the lapbooks from HOAC and it was great to read some tips from Katie to do our own. I hope she (or any other of the talented ladies at HOAC) has future articles here.
* on a side note, I downloaded the e-book earlier. With most of their coupon codes for free e-books, you need to choose check/money order as a payment method.
When you go to check out to get your free unit, please select check or money order as the payment type. This will assure you don't have any problems checking out :)
Thanks and join us next week for more lapbooking info.

Did I do this right?

After entering the code, and marking check/money order, is it suppose to show that $12 is due, or do I need to wait for 'approval'?
Never done this before, and looking forward to using the lapbook!
Thanks,
Kerry
