Tip of the Day ~ Read to your Children as Much as Possible

Ruth Beechik says that reading aloud is one of the best ways to teach your children writing skills. The act of hearing fine literature imprints in the mind ways to form words well on paper later. A young child can listen to books they may not be able to grasp until much later if they had to read it to themselves. Therefore, they are getting more advanced material if it is read to them aloud.

I am a visual learner myself and do best when I read something to myself. While I have noted that my children are also visual learners, I found that the oldest tested very well on the listening section of the Stanford Achievement Test. I believe it is because I read from at least four books to my children on a daily basis.

Because I am a visual learner, I know I miss some of what others tell me. I wish I had been better trained at listening to others so I can truly grasp what they are saying to me. Having our children listen to an assignment and then narrate back to us what we have said helps them to develop listening skills.

In college, some of my professors graded me on my ability to tell what they had said in the classroom. I had grown up in a two-room schoolhouse with four grades in one room. I had learned to tune out what was being said while I read my work. While I have good concentration skills at tuning out conversations, I find myself tuning out important things, too. So it has been important to me for my children to develop good listening skills as well as having the ability to read to themselves.

When a mother heard how much I read out loud to my children, she said she did not want to just give away information, she wanted them to get it for themselves. If my children were not reading anything at all, I could understand that concept, but I don't believe it is giving it away when the information I am providing is being filed away in their brains.

My children are only four and not quite one, but we read aloud a lot, and my older one listens to books on tape or CD during his rest. I'm amazed at how much he retains, and how good his vocabulary and grammer are. It's encouraged me to continue with a literature based curriculum when the time comes. I've also been reading about narration and it makes so much sense.

How very interesting to consider! I used to read a lot to my daughter. She is now 6 and spends a tremendous amount of time reading to herself. But I do still sit with her daily and read out of a more difficult book. I currently read a lot to my twin 4 yr olds. They also enjoy to sit and read (well, pretend) on their own. So far I think I am fortunate that they all appear to enjoy some of both reading worlds!

I asked my 5yo is she was ready to learn to read. She said no. I asked why and she said it was boring to read to herself. She wants me to keep reading to her. I try to read to her everyday. The middle child (8) likes to sit in. I also try to read a chapter book to all three kids. They love it. Plus I read history aloud to all of them and they are doing well retaining the info they hear. It is a great skill to have. Listen and then repeat. I actually realized that I don't do well to be read to. I guess I didn't develop that skill as a child. Makes sense though as I was never read to. I am so glad to have an opporutunity to create a different environment for my kids. Sorry for the long comment.
