Blogger of the Week
LoneStarMama

LoneStarHomeschool is a journal of the life of a mama just beginning her adventure into homeschooling.   Her writing is honest and simple.  Here’s how she describes her thoughts on the “first day of school”.

“It hit me this morning that if my oldest daughter were going to school, that today would be her first day of kindergarten. I just can't imagine sending her away for 7 hours every day. The other thing that hit me is that we are actually homeschooling her. We've known we were going to do this since before she was born, but it's actually here now. Anyway, just one of those weird moments you have at times!”

LoneStarMama is new to homeschooling and new to blogging   She started her blog after Spunky had an announcement about Homeschoolblogger.com at her site.  She decided to take the plunge and let us all know what life is like homeschooling in the “Lone Star State”.

“It's only going to be in the high 90's today and not 101 like yesterday. A COLD front! Can you imagine? This HOT weather is starting to make me crazy.”

To escape the heat, LoneStarMama moves indoors and blogs.  She talks about family life and political tidbits that catch her interest.  Her family life includes homeschooling her three young children, 5, 3 and almost 1.  She is a fan of the Charlotte Mason philosophy.   This method helps to incorporate her love of literature with her children.   Her husband has a mathematical science degree and has taken over the math department.  LoneStarMama says that’s fine with her!  She never enjoyed math in the first place.   They are using Sonlight’s Core Pre-K program, Usborne Books and Rod and Staff.

Currently, LoneStarMama, is involved in a Bible study on becoming a woman of influence.  Her blog is one avenue that we hope will help in that effort.

Make sure you stop by LoneStarMama's blog and welcome her to HSB.

RANDOM BLOG WINNER: Chalkboard Chats

Sponsor of the week:

Terri Johnson of KnowledgeQuest Maps and Robin Stokes of Marmee's Country Garden

The Featured Blogger will receive a 2-cd set from KnowledgedQuest Maps - Blackline Maps of World History (CD-ROM) and Blackline Maps of American History (CD-ROM) - this is a $45 value!

With Blackline Maps of World History, you, as the teacher, can...

1. Have over 200 World History maps at your fingertips.

2. Print them all or just the ones you need today.

3. Make multiple copies for your family's use.  (Schools, classrooms and co-ops can take advantage of our volume discounts or site license agreement.)

4. Never worry about lesson plans for your maps.  We've included them for you!

5. Have different aged students working at their own ability.  No more trying to stretch the lesson up or down.

With Blackline Maps of World History, your students can...

1. See the landscape (i.e. the political boundaries, major cities, etc.) from the historical time period - instead of what the region is like today.

2. Label places of historical significance on their outline maps.

3. Color in empires, trace travel routes, draw scales and directional symbols, etc.

4. Maps don't have to be boring... Students should feel free to experiment with colored markers, pencils, paint and even glitter (this is optional, of course!)

5. Finished maps can be posted to the bulletin board or refrigerator or placed in a history notebook.

Head on over to KnowledgeQuest Maps and see what other wonderful items that have for sale - timelines, biographies, Story of the World and MORE!

The Random Blogger will receive a selection of goodies - 3 bars of soap: one bar each of goat milk soap, lavendar soap and Rain soap -  from Robin of Marmee's Country Garden, Handmade Soaps, Lotions, Lip Balms, Aprons & More!

Hello and welcome to Marmee's Country Garden, Handmade Soaps and More. I'm glad you've stopped by and I'd like to tell you a little bit about how we got started.

In 2002 I began looking for something better for us to use on our skin as highly sensitive skin runs in our family. A few in our family have moderate to severe eczema. Store bought soaps of all kinds have always presented a problem for us. I began doing research on-line for something more natural. A good friend of mine blessed me one day by inviting me to her home to learn how to make soap. This was very exciting as I just knew this was the answer I had sought. My friend taught me how to make Cold Process Soap. Yes, soap made the old fashioned way like Grandma used to make it. The big difference is, we now know a lot more about how to balance the ingredients so what you get is a wonderfully gentle soap, never harsh. Well, I went home and made soap of my own!

I have come to enjoy trememdously the soap making process. And the difference in my family's skin has been amazing. I will never use another store-bought detergent bar! (commercial cleansing bar companies take the moisturizing glycerin out of their product and sell it to lotion companies so you feel as though you have to use a lotion!)

We, at Marmee's Country Garden, are committed to bringing you the finest hand-made soap/lotions possible. That is why I use no artificial colorants in any of my products. Your skin is your largest organ and anything you use on your skin goes into your body. I use a wide variety of skin-loving oils, such as jojoba, kukui nut, olive, almond and more. So, go ahead and pamper yourself and enjoy your stay here at Marmee's Country Garden!
