Homeschooling is Life! ~ The unschooling life's "Map Quest"
2:29 AM, Apr. 26, 2007
The more I read about unschooling, the less I really want to write about it! Not to sound uppity or anything, but I suppose our brand of unschooling is unique, and although we call it unschooling, some of the unschooling notions and whims I read about are a pox on educational freedom. Does that sound like an oxymoron? Do I sound judgmental? As free as we are, we still tend to judge others by what they do or don't do. Sad but true. So many things change every year that you homeschool your children. To us, homeschooling, unschooling, raising, whatever we are doing with our kids; all those terms are synonymous with each other. One thing melds into the next. We are all constantly striving to do our "own" thing, meaning what is best for our family. All the while, we are constantly being driven by forces and ideas outside of our own to do something we hadn't even ever considered, but suddenly it is mandatory. Adhering to laws, taking formal classes, joining fellowships or social groups seem to be an ever present distraction. Following this curriculum, trying that method, copying a different plan. These can lead us to feeling inferior and then may result in us tossing our best laid plans out the window. Why are we tossed to and fro? Why is it so hard to stay on the road? We must stay the course, but there are speed bumps and pratfalls lurking. I know, sometimes the road seems long, winding and full of potholes. Sometimes we have to detour. And there are the inevitable construction zones. But wait, what happened to the map? Did we leave it at home?
NASA Image In our modern world of in-dash navigation systems, it seems like there aren't any reasons at all for getting lost or off track. But even if you are one of those people who seem to have "road radar" inbred, it's still highly likely you just might find yourself at a crossroads and not know which way to turn. Our lives change constantly. Every time we turn around, something is new. Variety truly is the spice of life, and it is amazing to me how many different types of people there are! It boggles the mind, to say the least. But even though we may all be different, we still have many of the same basic needs. And we have the same basic desires too. We all seem to want to know where we have been, where we came from and where we are going. I started to title this the "purpose driven homeschool" but decided better of it. We do want to have a purpose, but we need to make sure of who is doing the driving, and that they at least have some semblance of a direction to be heading. If we are allowing something or someone outside of us to navigate our homeschooling or unschooling journey, then we are headed for some trouble. The bridge just may be out! I am all for consultation, of the Heavenly kind, that is. (Prayer goes a long way when you are on the journey of your life.) If you are consulting with the popular media, or your local school district, or your in-laws, or next-door neighbors, chances are that you are going to get off at the wrong exit. Consult with the Lord, the Almighty God. He will lead you, He will guide you, and He will show you great and mighty things, which you don't even know yet. He is absolutely the only and best guide you will ever need in this journey you are on. By the way, He is also your compass, your map, and your destination! Blessings on your journey! Nancy Thanks for stopping by the porch! Be sure to come by my other blog and say hello too. I'd love to hear where you are headed today! Comments
