Homeschooling is Life! ~ What are you striving for today?
1:53 PM, May. 3, 2007
Hi There! Last week I talked about our homeschooling quest, and in it, I had this paragraph: We are all constantly striving to do our "own" thing, meaning what is best for our family. All the while, we are constantly being driven by forces and ideas outside of our own to do something we hadn't even ever considered... After re-reading that, and then combining it with some other thoughts that have come my way this week, today I want to talk about the word "Striving." My family and I talked about this word last Sunday. I was wondering if "strife" and striving" are from the same root. Now, to some of you brainiacs out there, it was probably a "no brainer." But nevertheless we mortals decided to look it up. You see, sometimes we have to deal with some strife around here and it isn't a pretty picture! It happens to many of us. We are a pretty typical family, with relational dynamics happening all the time, and Mom and Dad are the referrees calling the fouls and interferences, and then handing out the penalties on occassion. So what exactly does "strive" mean? In Webster's 1828 dictionary, it says this: STRIVE, n. [See Strive.] , v.i. pret. strove; pp. striven. [G. This word coincides in elements with drive, (empahsis added by me) and the primary sense is nearly the same. See Rival.] 1. To make efforts; to use exertions; to endeavor with earnestness; to labor hard; applicable to exertions of body or mind. A workman strives to perform his task before another; a student strives to excel his fellows in improvement. Was it for this that his ambition strove to equal Cesar first, and after Jove? Strive with me in your prayers to God for me. Romans 15. Strive to enter in at the strait gate. Luke 8. 2. To contend; to contest; to struggle in opposition to another; to be in contention or dispute; followed by against or with before the person or thing opposed; as, strive against temptation; strive for the truth. My spirit shall not always strive with man. Genesis 6. 3. To oppose by contrariety of qualities. Now private pity strove with public hate, reason with rage, and eloquence with fate. 4. To vie; to be comparable to; to emulate; to contend in excellence. Not that sweet grove of Daphne by Orontes, and the inspird Castalian spring, might with this paradise of Eden strive. STRIFE 1. Exertion or contention for superiority; contest of emulation, either by intellectual or physical efforts. Strife may be carried on between students or between mechanics. Thus Gods contended, noble strife, who most should ease the wants of life. 2. Contention in anger or enmity; contest; struggle for victory; quarrel or war. I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon. Judges 12. These vows thus granted, raisd a strife above betwixt the god of war and queen of love. 3. Opposition; contrariety; contrast. Artificial strife lives in these touches livelier than life. 4. The agitation produced by different qualities; as the strife of acid and alkali. [Little used.] One thing I have always loved about the Webster dictionary was his use of scripture. There are many verses that talk about striving and I don't have room to list them all, but you might consider a word study if you are having problems with strife at home. He also used phrases and sayings of his day to illustrate the word usage. Sometimes they are downright tongue twisters, but nevertheless great examples for us! At one time, I read a paraphrase of the following verse, Psalm 46:10, and it stuck in my head. "Cease striving, and know that I am God." You might recognize that as the "Be still and know that I am God" verse. Here is the verse in context: Psalm 46:9-11 (New King James Version) Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc.
How many times do we strive, instead of just being still and letting God do what He wills for us instead of what we will? I hope you and I both can consider that and put it to practice today. Hopefully, I will get an entry up today on my "other" blog about "driving" and "being driven!" May the Lord bless your homeschooling and your life today, and that you will be able to "be still in Him!" Comments
