The Experimental Zone ~ *FIZZ*MELT*SHRINK* Aren't Chemical Reactions Fun?!
1:43 AM, May. 23, 2007
This week, in addition to an activity, there are some newsy tidbits at the end. Including, information on science classes for those of you living in Texas and Rhode Island.
What you'll need to gather: vegetable based packing peanuts (please make sure they are not Styrofoam based) plastic bowls measuring cups or beakers 6-8 spoons water: cold and boiling vinegar fingernail polish remover hydrogen peroxide household bleach lemon juice salt any other safe household substances that meet parental approval safety goggles Directions: 1. Put on safety goggles, then measure 100 mL or 1/2 of cold water into a bowl. Drop in a packing peanut and press down to soak the peanut. If you want, use a stop watch to measure how long it takes the peanut to break down. 2. Repeat step one using boiling water. Only an adult should measure and pour the boiling water. 3. Discussion: in which water sample did the packing peanut dissolve more quickly? 4. Measure 100 mL of cold water into a bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of salt and stirl well. Do not place a packing peanut in the water, yet. Next, measure 100 mL of cold water into a bowl. Place a peanut into each bowl and immerse for a second to soak each peanut. 5. Discussion: in which water sample did the packing peanut dissolve more quickly? 6. Measure 100 mL of fingernail polish remover into a plastic container. Drop in one packing peanut and use a spoon to immerse it for a second. What happens? (We were very surprised!) In our experiment, the packing peanut pretty much kept its shape, but grew much smaller! Note: We have some guesses as to why the chemical reaction of the packing peanut and the fingernail polish remover caused the peanut to shrink and not dissolve, but we're still looking for an official explanation. If you, your spouse or a freind are a chemist or chemically inclined, I hope you'll share any explanations with us! 7. Repeat steps 6 using vinegar, household bleach, hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice - Use these items SEPARATELY. Do NOT mix any of these chemicals together. 8. Review what happened. Which liquids caused the packing peanut to dissolve the fastest? slowest? What other unusual reactions did you observe? Extend the activity: For this portion of the experiment, you'll need pH paper strips, a pen and masking tape. On a work surface place small pieces of masking tape and label them: water, salt water, vinegar, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, n.p. remover, etc. Dip a pH strip into each substance and place it on the corresponding label. Do you see any correlations between the pH level and the reaction between the packing peanut and the substance. Do acidic substances cause the packing peanuts to dissolve or shrink? Perhaps there aren't any correlations you can observe. Sometimes that happens in science! *****************
ALSO, please check out the winners from our insect contest. I have been unable to reach one of the LadyBugLand winners and one of the field guide winners. Please leave me a comment if you were a winner and haven't heard from me! *****************
Here are some science classes going on in Texas which may be of interest to folks in that area. Please use the contact information that is listed, I am not affiliated with any of these programs and cannot provide any additional information than what is listed below.

We will be offering several computer programming classes this summer. 1. Introduction to programming with 3D animation June-August, 2007. This is a three month class that gets us started in programming with a 3D animation slant. We will use email and our web site to work with each other. There will be two meetings each month to review what we have learned, go over any problems and get started on the following phase of the class. The first class session will be on Tuesday, June 12th. 2. Programming with Microsoft Robotics Studio These are short workshops that introduce you to the world of programming with the Microsoft Robotics Studio (MSRS). It uses the Microsoft Visual Programming Language (VPL) to teach you to write programs in a fun but informative series of example programs. Two Day Workshops, two hours each day. Session #1 - Tuesday, June 19th and Thursday, June 21st from 2-4pm Session #2 - Monday, July 9th and Wed, July 11th from 10am to 12 noon. 3. General Computer Usage - details updated soon. For details see: http://www.jsoft.com/ts/classes/ questions - email info@jsoft.com Interest/information meetings: Tuesday, May 29th. 2-3pm - Introduction to programming with 3D animation 3-4pm - Programming with Microsoft Robotics Studio The Coffee Guy 5941 FM 2920 Spring, TX 77388 Kuykendahl and FM 2920, SE corner (near Chase Bank, ShoGun restaurant) Feel free to contact us with any questions or if you are unable to attend the info meeting but are interested in the classes/workshops. Thank you for taking the time to visit. See you next week on The Front Porch. Michelle Michelle and her husband have been homeschooling for 9 years. They are the owners of Treasure Box Press.
