The Experimental Zone ~ How to Buy A Microscope and a MicroBible Giveaway

2:50 AM, May. 30, 2007
Memorial Day weekend is our state's annual homeschool conference.  It sure is tempting to buy a few things that aren't on my "list."

This year splurge purchasing was not a problem for me. I literally had 2 hours to shop due to holiday weekend scheduling conflicts.  I had to stick to my list.  I was so proud of myself.  Most assuredly, I won't faint when I open June's credit card statement.

But, with a few minutes left to shop, as I rounded the end of an aisle and spotted the GreatScopes booth,  I realized, "Oh, no!  We need a microscope next year!"  It had completely slipped my mind!

Admittedly, a few years ago,  I bought a cheap microscope off of a used homeschool buy/sell board for $10.  You know, one of those TV types.  My poor 6 year old daughter was so frustrated with it.  She thought she'd get to see the hairs on a fly.

Yup, a $10 tv type microscope is not going to work for my son's high school science or my daughter's insatiable curiosity.  The time has finally come.  I feel like I'm hindering our science, especially with such a curious child and a sone entering high schol biology who wants to go into a science field as a profession.

I simply didn't have time to at the conference to visit the GreatScopes booth, obtain their advice and really determine what would fit our needs.  So, I went to their website over the weekend.  They have a TERRIFIC FREE (yes, FREE!) e-book entitled "How To Buy the Right Microscope".

You can read it online, have a text version emailed to you or download an e-book.  The table of contents is even listed, so you can see how comprehensive the ebook is.

John Lind is the founder of GreatScopes.  The Lind family has been homeschooling for 20 years!  John  has placed all of his advice and knowledge into his e-book.  However, he does offer this additional advice to consider before you purchase:
  • Think about how the microscope will be used.
  • Consider how many children will be using the microscope
  • If one or more of your children might be described as "Mr./Miss Science", spending a little more on a scope will end up being money well spent.
  • Otherwise, if it is one child, with little interest in science, who is doing high school biology, a somewhat inexpensive 400x microscope should be just fine.

When you visit GreatScopes.com to read the "How to Buy.." article, please check out this page of special interest to homeschoolers.

Simply fill out the form, and they'll send you the details of the discount.

A Fun Giveaway!

After I read the ebook over the weekend, I excitedly contacted John to obtain permission to link to the ebook in this week's post.

Not only did John say yes and offer the homeschool discount link, but GreatScopes is going to give away a pair of MicroBibles to a lucky winner!

The MicroBible is a piece of clear mylar 2" x 2" on which the ENTIRE King James version of the Bible is printed  (the Bible is printed on a 1" x 1" section!).  How neat is that?!

Here's the link to the MicroBible information.

To enter your name, simply leave a comment below saying, "Please enter me in the contest."

Now, as always, if you blog about it on your blog, we'll enter your name twice into the contest.  We'll select a name on Tuesday, June 4th at noon EST.

Thank you for taking the time to visit.   See you next week on The Front Porch.
