Several people have commented asking me about book organization tips. I've procrastinated answering because other than following the "birds of a feather flock together" principle and keeping subjects grouped in sections, I don't really have a system.
THEN, I saw Dana's shelves! Dana has a system, and it is a good one!
All books are given a color coded sticker:
Pink--Science
Light Orange--Read Alouds
Lime--Readers
Medium Blue--Bible
Red--Reference
Navy--Arts/Crafts/Music
Yellow/Green--General Biographies
Dark Orange--Indians
Histories, which comprises the majority of their family bookshelves, have yellow circles. General Histories have solid yellow dots while the others are divided by time period with a two-tone dot; yellow on top and another color on bottom:
Yellow/Pink--Ancient Civilizations
Yellow/Navy--Middle Ages
Yellow/Dark Orange--Renaissance & Reformation
Yellow/Dark Green--Westward Expansion
Yellow/Red--Colonial America
Yellow/Light Orange--Post Civil War - Pre WWI Yellow/Medium Blue--WWI - 1940
Yellow/Light Blue--WWI - Present
Books about war (or taking place in wartime) have a gold star in the center of the sticker.

Aren't Dana's bookshelves beautifully organized? Thanks, Dana for sharing them with us!
