The Experimental Zone ~ Science Events Around the U.S. and Fun Online Resources
2:03 AM, Jul. 18, 2007
A heartfelt "thank you" to Steve Walden and the HSB and TOS staff for stepping in last week to provide a wonderful Experimental Zone entry!
This week I'd like to share some fun and unusual science events, resources and links I've uncovered over the last few weeks. Events Around the U.S. Note: Even if you don't live in one of the geographic areas listed below, do check out the website links...you never know where they may lead you! Robotics Educators Conference August 15 - 17, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Robotics Educators Conference will be held at Butler County Community College, north of Pittsburgh in Butler, PA, Aug 15-17. This conference will gather teachers, educators, administrators, and parents who use or plan to use robotics as a tool to teach math, science and technology for students. Attendees can: - Try out hands-on activities that use NXT, VEX and other controllers to teach math & science. - Share experiences & ideas for implementing robotics in the classroom. - Learn about dynamic new developments in robotics education. - Meet fellow educators and experts - Learn about various robotics competition opportunities. - Guided tours of Carnegie Mellon?s Robotics facilities!!! If you are interested in attending the conference, please check out the following link at: http://www-education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/corridor/main/home_matter/conference.htm The conference is being facilitated by Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Academy and its partners in the Robotics Corridor project, http://www.robotics corridor. org . L2Bot camp for High School Students at Lawrence Tech in Michigan July 23rd - July 26th, 9:00am - 3:00pm Have fun assembling Lawrence Tech's laptop robot, the L2Bot, with a webcam. After learning basics of Java programming language using Eclipse IDE, campers explore basic concepts in autonomous robotics navigation, image processing, computer vision, speech synthesis, and speech recognition. Some knowledge of a programming language, such as C is helpful but not required. For more information or to register, please contact: Lisa Kujawa, kujawa@ltu.edu, Fax: (248) 204-2018 You will find a registration form as well as other camps provided by Lawrence Tech this summer at: http://www.ltu.edu/community_k12/summer_camps_07.asp The AAH-Robotics will have a Sumobot tournament on Saturday, August 11th at the Ruiz Library at 1600 Grove Blvd, Austin, Texas. It begins at 1:00. In a robotic sumo contest, two robots attempt to push each other out of a circular arena. No intentional damage is allowed. Sumobots are constructed of LEGO parts. Individual or teams may enter, and it is open to all ages. To enter or for more info, you would either contact atmoonlit-hunt@earthlink.net for a registration form & a copy of the rules; or you would join the aah-robotics list at AAH-Robotics-subscribe@yahoogroups.com . AAH-Robotics is an association to help create more robotic opportunities in the Austin area. To join please include a description of your interest and how you heard about the group. Registration ends August 1, 2007. Fun Resources on the Web Check out the FuturesChannel.com. where people in the real world show how they use science and math in their jobs. Virtual Summer Science Fair Contest (Not Your Typical Science Fair Contest --- read on....) Young scientists of all ages and their teachers (including parents who home-school) are invited to enter the 2007 3rd International Virtual Summer Science Fair Contest sponsored by www.super-science-fair-projects.com. The contest will run from However, this isn’t your typical science fair contest – students submit their idea for a science fair project. Each science fair idea must include the corresponding hypothesis. The organizers are looking for fun, unusual and creative projects. The first prize winner in each age category will win an iPod! Energize Your Summer! Just for fun, ask your children to define the following: Christmas tree, horse head and a bobtail. Hint: we’re not talking about a pine tree, a farm animal or a wild cat. Check out the “real” answers at the Energy Information Administration website Visit the homepage for a wealth of information and activities.
A Fun P.S. This is not science related, but it’s a fun resource for summer afternoons that are just too sultry for outside activities or to help little ones forget about that thundering summer storm just outside the back door! Thank you for visiting this week! Comments
