Home Where They Belong ~ The Word is Out and Spreading

2:11 AM, Jul. 18, 2007

Reading the news can be depressing but every now and then a headline will pop out at you that promises something to make your heart sing.  This one grabbed me today, Do Away With Public Schools.  Jonah Goldberg's report is worth a mention here on Gena's blog.

Yes, this topic has been seen before but it still thrills me when I see someone new brandishing the pen to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.   The word is out and spreading, not only doesn't the government need to run education, its track record proves it shouldn't be running education.

Interestingly, just below the article the only ads Google could come up with were for public schools.

I have a genuine question for you... all of you on this site.

What happens to those children who's parents don't have a guided interest in them and have no other way to educate themselves then public school? What happens to those kids who's parents don't take an interest in their education at all? Do you think it fair that those children not get any type of education because you think public schools are the devil?

Tia, here's another one

Jul. 12, 2007 - Awesome article!

Thanks for hunting that one up! I agree with the writer - and I'd like nothing better than for the government to get completely out of the education business. We just need someone to come up with a truly workable plan to get us there.

Blessings,
Kym

Jul. 12, 2007 - response

Well, it would have been nice for Anonymous to give us his/her name, but since the question was for "all of us on the site" I thought I might try to answer.
It's a big, big world out there. There are other ways of educating kids, and it hasn't always been public schools doing the educating. I am not necessarily saying abolish the public school system, or even saying it is the "devil." However, much of it today is decidedly anti-Christian, and those of us who are teaching our children by the principles of God's Word at home are doing it because of a deeper conviction than just because we are "anti-public school."

Sure, it is very sad (but true) that a lot of children don't have involved parents. And would it be fair that those kids might not get an "education" if the schools were closed? Let me ask you this: Is it fair that mulitudes of families don't have a guided interest in them because they have already given them away to the state and lost them (and their hearts) long ago? It's part of the root problem, not just a symptom.

Even though some things in our lives seem like they will never change, ie; parents putting their kids in school at age 5 or even earlier now. Some parents who have never given a second thought to the importance of their child as an individual are realizing that. It IS possible to make a change. Families are taking responsibility. Hearts ARE turning towards the Lord, and His plan for educating children. Even the hardest of hearts are softening.

There is so much more to it than this. If you think that education only happens in an institutional setting, you are sorely mistaken.

I am so thankful that Homeschool Blogger is here to encourage those of us who are truly seeking encouragement in our choice to homeschooling. Although we are all different in our needs and choices, we are all able to help each other and lift each other up. We are also here for those who feel the strong desire to bring their kids home, and not just to the physical home, but to the home that is rooted in the love we have for our kids right in the center of our hearts.

Blessings to you!
Nancy

Glad to see you Anonymous! You have a very valid question, and I am wondering just how well you read the article this post links to. It states,

"Really, what would be so terrible about government mandating that every kid has to go to school, and providing subsidies and oversight when necessary, but then getting out of the way?"

The article isn't talking about doing away with school all together, it's talking about getting rid of an educational system that does not work.

Secondly, there are already laws in place for abuse and neglect. If public schools were completely done away with and the parents you mention were to truly neglect their child's education then the law would step in, just as they do now for parents whose children are truant. The public school system hasn't been able to fix that problem either.

Hope that answers your questions.

Thank you all for answering my questions. I do not have a blog of any such that I feel comfortable sharing. I do plan to do some type of "alternative" schooling, but it will probably be boarding school. Regardless, I was just concerned about it, because if truancy is not a reason to have your kids taken away for good...

Regardless, thank you so much for answering my question.

truency?

I will assume you are not stating that those of us who prefer to homeschool our children are not allowing them to be "truent" from education? My 9 year old is currently completing the same texts as kids in the grade 5 class in the local public school (almost 1 year ahead of her same age friends attending that public school) Based on the homeschooled children I have met my daughter is not the exception, but rather a common example of what home education can do.

The word truant does not apply to homeschoolers. To be truant you are absent without permission. As homeschooling is legal in all 50 states homeschoolers are not truant.

I would also like to say to anonymous that, of course we all know that not all parents will homeschool. Of course we want all children to have the opportunities to learn and expand their horizons. All homeschoolers do not have perfect homelives or perfect educations. There are MANY christian teachers laboring in the public education arena who can/do and will make large impacts on many children. I don't think any of us believe that gov't will get out of education. There's a lot of things they should get out of, but it's not going to happen. I'd like all kittens to have loving homes and no dogs to live on chains and no deer to starve in the woods and all old people to live with their families in loving care situations and no babies to ever lose their lives, but that won't happen until Jesus comes back. But I believe strongly, that there are many, many more parents who could and should take their children back home. Most probably don't think they could do it, but they'd surprise themselves and enjoy a rich, rich reward for their efforts.
