Homeschooling Through High School ~ Your Teens Need You Too

A typical mindset down through the ages for many has been to be a "stay-at-home" mom for the early years, then when the children hit school age, pack them up and ship them out, and get a job. Of course, with early education being pushed, the age for "shipping them out" has gotten younger and younger. Many homeschool parents keep them through elementary school, and even Jr. High, but feel they need to "prepare for college" at the local high school. Or they just don't feel qualified. Besides, the kids are older now, they can handle it, right?

I feel that our teens need us more than ever. No, homeschooling will not save our children. But it does provide the best possible opportunity for biblical parenting to take place. Homeschooled teens will not be exempt from "sin" - that we can count on. None of us are. What if your child gets into trouble? Do you throw in the towel and say "so much for homeschooling -- a lot of good that did!" No, of course not. Rather, that would be the time to say "Thank God he/she is in our homes, where we can continue to lead, guide and direct.

Teens are not that far off from having been children! It wasn't so long ago. They long for encouragement. They may get good at hiding their feelings, or sometimes show them all to well, but they want our approval! They want us to cheer their accomplishments, and for goodness sake, smile at them! Sometimes every day seems like a challenge, and the smiles don't come so easy. But we need to find those encouraging smiles, and hugs, and - the love they crave. And they desperately need us to forgive their blunders, large and small. Don't fall into the temptation of "doing this" to impress others. God's applause (approval) is the only approval we need look for. The homeschool community can be quite a smorgasboard of incredible children and teens doing incredible things. Pride is the temptation. Lets put no one on any kind of pedestal, nor take any out for a stoning.

Aren't you glad that homeschooling gives you a chance to apply full time biblical parenting not just in the elementary years, but in the Jr. High and High School years as well. Academically, homeschooling is superior. Practically - time and interests - homeschooling is superior. But the best part is that the opportunity to give generous servings of love, hugs and encouragement to those who were children just yesterday - our teens.

We have 3 teens.
We pulled all 3 kids out of PS 5 years ago.
There is a NIGHT and DAY difference between kids who are not crushed my peer pressure and kids who are.
Night and Day.
Talking to my 17 yo daughter the other day I realized: She has formulated her beliefs and opinions based upon Scripture, and has the confidence to not only speak, but to stand on her beliefs.....in ANY situation.
She doesn't care what the crowd is doing and she doesn't care if she "fits in with the in group". She is perfectly comfortable within her own skin.
THANK YOU JESUS.
I give Him all the Glory and all the Praise for directing us to home education!!

This was exactly what I needed to hear this morning! My dd is just starting 9th grade and many, many of her homeschooled friends are going the PS route now. But the Lord is continuing to lead us down the homeschool path. Little jewels of encouragement like your blog keep us focused on the big picture and the benefits of homeschooling high school. Thank you and blessings to you.

Our eldest is entering 9th grade this year and I've been reading tons about homeschooling for highschool/teens. This is the best I've read so far! Thanks for the reminder.

We also noticed that our teen thrived by being educated at home. He has been able to participated in sports, volunteer work, his church youth group and extra curricular activities.
My husband and I are very confident in our choice as we now approach his sophomore year.

I couldn't agree more. My oldest is entering 11th grade this year, my middle son, 9th. They think for themselves, they don't follow the crowd, and they think Jesus is cool! They can't be compared to the children I see everyday who have been a part of the educational system. I thank God that I've been able to homeschool them, and will continue to do so until they have completed thier educations!

I absolutely agree! I am currently homeschooling my third high school student. The first two have graduated and gone on to lead well adjusted, successful lives. I wouldnt change a thing!
