It’s that time of year again…. August is here and the new school year is looming. If you haven’t made plans yet, it’s time to! What will this year’s course of study cover? Over on the Homeschooling Only One message board (affectionately called HOOville), the ladies started a thread which lays out what they will use for the coming year. It’s sometimes helpful to see how others plan their school year. Some are quite relaxed; some use a pre-packaged curricula option; others are quite eclectic in their choices. Feel free to click on over and see what some have planned.
When one is starting their first few years of homeschooling, there is generally a heavier dependence on pre-packaged materials and a more traditional approach. As one gets acclimated to this new learning lifestyle, most seem to branch out and use other materials, picking and choosing what sounds like a good match to their child. Using various catalogs, and even scope and sequences (such as World Book’s A Typical Course of Study), can be helpful for a mom and dad in charting their own course.
Hope you are having fun looking at all of the material available out there for your homeschool! Remember, not all that long ago, there was very little geared for those teaching their children at home. Also remember, however, that you can give your child a great education with not much more than a library card, too! Enjoy the challenge and the fun of creating this year's course of study! Remember the journey is just as important as the final destination and at times can be more important than the destination. Enjoy your journey!
