Taming the Chaos ~ "Traveling Light" Contest ~ Week 2!

12:56 AM, Aug. 7, 2007

Wow!  Some of you shed a lot of pounds last week!  Keep posting as you go to help motivate others!  If we can do this much in one week, imagine how much we can lose by the end of August!

Here's a link to the rules and the initial post.  Essentially, for every 50 pounds you report "lost"  (clutter that actually leaves your possession--to the dumpster, curb, Goodwill, ebay, friends, or whatever) you are entered into a drawing for gift certificates to The Old Schoolhouse store!    So, if you lose 420 pounds (as Maleah has already!), you'll be entered in the drawing eight times.  (And I'm guessing Maleah's not done yet!)

It isn't too late!  All you need to do to enter is to get rid of 50 pounds of clutter in the month of August!  The more you lose the better, but fifty pounds is all it takes to get started!

Here's the tally I have so far:

Andrea (andijeane) posted:

"40 pounds of clothes 10 pounds of shoes and videos We also threw out 15 pounds of garbage, but I'm not sure if we have to keep things at an even 50. I'll keep a running tab on my blog. "

Great job, Andrea!  You've lost 65 pounds already (It doesn't have to stay at an even 50 pounds, just at the end of August, you'll have one entry in the drawing for every 50 pounds lost total.)  Keep it up!

Maleah posted:

"This weekend we've gotten rid of 3 twin mattresses, bunk beds, a crib, a dresser, a toddler bike, two strollers, and two filing cabinets. The couch and loveseat haven't made it out yet. So probably at least 300 pounds of stuff. Then on top of that we've gotten rid of at least 100 pounds of clothes, bedding, shoes and toys.

I've also gotten rid of at least 20 pounds of magazine clippings, homeschool worksheets, and other papers. I scanned them all into my computer so they're easily accessible now and don't take up any actual space. "

Wow!  Maleah, that's 420 pounds in just one week!   I love the idea of scanning in the worksheets and clippings!  Paper is one of my final frontiers.

Misty (3boyz) posted:

"So far, I have lost.....

64 lbs in shoes and clothes! That's all the clothes and shoes that no longer fit thanks to losing 80 lbs. Can I count the weight loss as well. (That was done all by me a year ago... its just all sat on the bottom of my closest since then.

39 lbs in left over stuff from a garage sale 2 years ago. We kept it around thinking we will save it for the next one. Who has time for one of those?

17 lbs in car seat, high chair, and miscellaneous baby stuff to my friend who is pg with #4. "

Misty lost 120 pounds in this first week!  We too have stuff stashed for a garage sale that will never be.  It is GOING AWAY to goodwill this next week.

Laura (FoggyMountainFarm) posted:

"Donated to a local thift store: Clothing & Shoes: 34 lbs Household items: 12 lbs Toys: 1 lbs Taken to a used bookstore: Books: 5 lbs "

That's a total of 52 pounds, Laura!  It is amazing how things add up.  Obviously weight isn't really the essential factor in decluttering, but it does give us a way to measure progress and have fun!

I won't enter the drawing, but here's my stats:

Last week’s 54 pounds

71 pounds of magazines and books that aren’t even goodwill worthy

27 pounds of photo trash from my disorganized photo and negatives bin (And no, I didn’t throw out the GOOD photos or negatives, this was just the junk)

52 pounds of assorted 'stuff' from the loft in the barn

22 pounds of old clothing (trash, not goodwill worthy)

8 pounds of books sold online and shipped out!

My total this week: 180

My grand total: 334 (But remember, I started two days early, and had a 54 pound head start.)

Several others commented that they will be joining too!  I'm eager to hear everyone's updates!

Feel free to link on your blog, and display a button if you wish:

Or, if this suits your style better:

Keep posting totals!  I'm excited at the progress!  Remember, the biggest "prize" is in gaining a clutter free home!

This week has been a bit slower for us.

2:11 AM, Aug. 7, 2007, posted by Maleah
Here's the update I posted on my blog:

This week we've gotten rid of 15 lbs of household stuff sent to Goodwill, 4 old windows I was saving for a someday craft project (2 lbs each), queen mattress and boxspring set (40 lbs), more clothes (10 lbs at least), a bunch of cloth diapers (2 lbs), a Lego table and 3 chairs (20 lbs), paintball gun (2 lbs), rocking chair (10 lbs), 35 lbs box of books (huge thick tech manuals), and we've taken out at least 3 big contractor trash bags full of trash, broken toys, undonatable clothes, clutter, etc (probably at least 10 lbs each). So about 172 pounds of stuff this week.

For a total of 592. (Quickly scanning the house for anything weighing 8 pounds I can toss out... Not finding anything handy. Darn!)

The couch and loveseat are suppose to be gone tomorrow. And we're also suppose to be clearing out dozens of old paint cans, pieces of wood flooring, and misc. left by the previous owners, That's going to weigh a ton. I also have scanned in more magazine clippings and paper. If I get around to it tomorrow I'll post a before and after picture. Also toward the end of the week we have a storage shed at DH's parent's house that we want to go through and purge. That might wait until the baby arrives.

Wonder how much the placenta is going to weigh and if I can count that... j/k!

It really does add up fast.

I put the trash bag banner in my sidebar on my blog so I can keep track of the stuff that goes out of my house.

My own total so far should read 234, not 334!

Sorry, I think I threw out my brain in one of those trash sacks. ;)
