We receive a lot of mail at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, most of it encourages and blesses us with kind words, but then there are those that totally blow us away and end up inspiring us to keep on keeping on.
These are the stories of moms (and dads) who choose to homeschool even under the most difficult of circumstances. I mean, really hard things. Severe health issues, working full time at night as a single parent and homeschooling during the day, death of loved ones, extremely difficult extended family relations, very difficult special needs children, dads who are gone most of the time so mom's alone raising and schooling a big brood - so many differing scenarios. Things that would break a weaker resolve to keep on keeping on.
What is it that keeps them going and keeps them from not being crushed by the weight of their problems? Most often these humble people will simply say that God has called them to homeschool and there is no other way than His way for them. This is true conviction played out in real life. Real homeschooling doesn't always look like the pretty covers of moms in pristine homes with two children sitting peacefully at the table poring over workbooks. Real life homeschooling is sometimes just getting through real life.
The lessons learned here could never be taught in any other setting. The heros on display are those moms and dads who are so committed to following God's mandate for them, that they continue on day after day even when they think they can't make it another day. They have great resolve because they know their great God.
I complain about such minor things. My kids are bickering again. I can't find that math book I just bought. How am I going to add another student to my full plate. I look to my homeschool heros and realize that I have nothing to complain about. I want to know my God better, that I might serve Him with all I have.
Are you struggling just to keep on keeping on, but you are staying strong in your conviction to keep your children home where they belong? Then, you, my friend, are my homeschool hero.
Please comment over on this same post at Home Where They Belong and tell us who your homeschool hero is and why. Someone will be chosen to win Secrets of Successful Homeschooling e-book, Calvin Miller’s The Book of Jesus for Families, Trailblazer Books Curriculum Guide for Amy Carmichael, LionX Publishing “I Don’t Want to Take a Nap” , and K.P. Yohannan’s Revolution in World Missions plus, a back issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine!! Contest will stay open until next Tuesday. (For U.S. residents only.)
Stay strong in Him,

My homeschool here would have to be Melissa Snow! Even after battling brain cancer for over a year and a half she still uplifts US, encourages US and schools her children. Only by the grace of God! : )
