How do you view your homeschool? Your life? Is it just one step after the other as you move through your days? When misfortune or “wrong turns” come your way, do you feel yourself groaning? It ought not to be like that! Life is an Adventure!
As our son was growing up, either when I made a wrong turn or when our family decided to go the back roads to wherever we were going, I’d remark, “Oh, Boy!! We’re on an Adventure!” or “We’re not lost! We’re on an Adventure!” Isn’t that a better way of looking at your world than to just trudging along?
To change one’s view of life, one has to be purposeful. You might turn left instead of right and find yourself completely turned around and lost, but if you succumb to a “lost mentality” you lose something, and more importantly, your children lose something. The first reaction may be to bemoan the fact, but you can choose to turn that around into seeing this new challenge as an adventure: something to be experienced, embraced, and conquered. We lose ultimately when we choose to embrace the challenge as something to be endured and our children lose because they learn by what they see. Their future outlook on life is being formed in the way we as their parents react and respond to life.
We have to choose to see the Adventure in Life. Choose to embrace the challenge! Even during the hardest trials, we have to choose to find the lightning bugs of life. Those little things that light up the dark, which bring a smile to not only your face but to your very soul.
Apologies to my regular readers, as you’ve not found my column here the last two Fridays. My family has found a couple of Adventures to experience, embrace, and conquer. My husband had an accident while unloading a trailer which necessitated an ambulance ride and 20 stitches. He was able to get half of the stitches out 10 days later, then nine more this week, and hopefully the lingering three stitches will be gone by the beginning of next week. And last week I had the last of several medical tests on my urinary tract. This test was a lot more extensive, needing general anesthesia. I’m still recovering from the test and won’t even see the urologist until the middle of September to discuss the results. So, this has been a reminder to me also that we need to look for the lightning bugs and embrace the Adventure that is Life.
