Many homeschoolers have been inspired by the Bluedorns! Yesterday they inspired me in an unexpected area: the closet!
(Click here to go to the Bluedorn's blog and make sense of my reference. Wish Helena Bluedorn, "Happy Birthday" as you scroll down to the closet pictures.)
I love this idea: Closets that show that nothing is beneath our notice; Closets that show that it isn't just an outside facade of beauty but what is within that counts; Closets with personality, be it fun and bright. or classy and elegant;. Closets that give pleasure every time you put away your shoes. Closets that rise above being merely tidy and organized and exhibit personality in their own right!
There are so many options for having a closet come into its own. A friend (also inspired by the Bluedorn example) is considering a nautical theme in her boys’ closet. For a more formal master bedroom, white stripes on ivory would be elegant. Even simply defying convention and going two colors darker on the same color card (rather than lighter, as is often done) would add drama upon opening the door.
Part of taming the chaos is to go beyond subduing the mess. Our aim is to also create beauty. In a world where the focus is so easily consumed with what is on the surface, it is a rich delight to create in our homes a microcosim of what we desire in our lives–a beauty and order from within.
Perhaps dramatic closets aren’t your cup of tea. Look around this week though, and see how you can demonstrate beauty in the lesser seen details within your home. Maybe it is just replacing the liner papers and putting sachets in the dresser drawers. Whatever it is, add some beauty in the unseen places.
