36th Carnival of Homesteading ~ It's an Education

12:23 PM, Feb. 11, 2008

Some of you maybe be wondering why on earth the HSB Company Porch is hosting the Carnival of Homesteading.  Here's the answer - homesteading is an education in and of itself.  When someone decides to take up homesteading they use reading, writing, math, science, history, and health.  It also takes a good deal of perseverance to homestead because it's not always pretty!

So here we are.  Are you ready to begin?  Good! Let's learn from each other.

Math

Now how many of you knew that you could make candy for your honeybees?  You can get the formula from Grandma Rosie's Texas Home.  Anyone can tell you that if you have happy bees that means you will have MORE bees!

Kathi from Oak Hill Homestead talks about feeding the birds and the Great Backyard Bird Count.  You could probably count a greater number of birds in your backyard if you are willing to feed them!

Cloth diapers.  Now that could go under science because you learn a lot about the human body while changing them.  It could go under health because they can be better for the baby.  It could also go under persaverance, I think that should be obvious why. Instead it is going under math because Amanda from My Learning Experience gives you all the details on how she launders them.  Not to mention it saves money!

Science

Sprittibee explains how she has been using nature as a teaching tool.  She has an awesome list of websites and other resources to help you explore and learn more about nature!

Aha!  Twins!  Newborns on a farm are always fun and Adventures in the 100 Acre Wood wants to share the good news.  Animal husbandry is always something good to know when you homestead.

I like donkeys and this little fellow looks like a real charmer.  Eeyore visited Homestead Mama from Love Learn Serve for a little while.

History

Belle from Born 100 Years to Soon tells us about her vintage quilt top - her birthday present.  It was a present from her Granny.  I'm sure she has a lot of stories to tell behind those old fabric pieces.

Health

Oh yum I love granola!  Kerimae from A Happy Home shares her recipe for make-it-your-own granola.  Trust me, once I make it, it will be my own, I won't be sharing it!

Wait!  Hold up on the granola.  I'll take the stuffed french toast please!  Oo la la!  The lighter side serves them up warm and cheesy.

I'm going to stick this post under health.  What?  Organization under heath?  Yeah, because I know when I'm not organized I lose my sanity.  Nancy from Lessons Learned on the Farm gives us a few of her (rare) organizing tips.

Maybe organization should of had its own category.  No matter, I'll take all the help I can get and Heart of Wisdom has an excellent idea for getting organized with good ol' dishpans

How about canning soaked dried beans - making your own pinto beansLaura Williams gives her super easy recipe that will have your pantry shelves filled up in no time.

It feels like spring so let's make salad! I'm game if The Sojourner is.  Salad doesn't always mean just fresh vegetables.

Perseverance

Tamara from Training Hearts shares her day with frozen pipes, cold weather, and box day!  All that mud is enough to try anyone's patience!

Here's someone else with broken pipes.  Jacque from Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths explains Murphy's law of pipes and propane.  Don't forget the wounded dog.  It's a country song in the making.

Eyebright from Defective Compositions shares her experience with making bread on her Homemaker-in-Training #3 post.  Which also happens to be about perseverance.

If you or your child has completed high school then you know what it takes to stick to it and keep going.  Jocelyn from A Pondering Heart shares what happens after high school Part 1: an introduction.

Here we are at the end!  "Wait!" You're hollering.  "What about reading and writing?"  Well, you just read it and the carnival entrants wrote it.

You can read the next Carnival of Homesteading at quietcajun's and if you are so inclined you could write up a post and enter it here.
