With distance learning, anyone can earn college credits from the comfort of their own home. If you have highschoolers in your family, this means they can work towards earning a college degree while they’re still in high school!
Many homeschooling families I know don’t want to send their children far away from home outside of family life to go to college once they graduate, and rightly so. From the very beginning God’s design for the family has been for members to stick together, build relationships, and further His kingdom together.
This doesn’t mean that your teen is limited in his ability to be educated. Oh no. The home is a wonderful place to learn and to be one’s own teacher. In fact, sometimes teaching yourself something new is better than any other method of learning. When you’re really interested in something, you’ll be motivated to learn all you can about the subject.
If you want your highschooler to pursue higher education from home after they graduate from 12th grade or even before they graduate, rest assured that there is a way! One of the most common ways to earn college credits through distance learning is by taking credit-by-examination (CBE) tests.
With CBE tests, you can focus on studying one single subject until you know it thoroughly, and then you can take a test on the material. If you pass, you’ll earn the college credits for it. If you don’t pass, you may have to wait 6 months before re-taking the same test, but other than that you don’t get penalized.
CLEP tests are one example of CBE tests. For more information about them, you can visit the College Board website at http://www.collegeboard.com/clep.
If you want your highschooler to be able to earn a degree without leaving your family’s life, have hope! God always provides a way. Credit-by-examination tests are something you may want to look into!
