Homeschooling is Life! ~ What is So Special About a Conference?

2:30 AM, Jun. 19, 2008

Hi Friends!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of taking my two teens up to Denver for the state homeschool conference.  My eldest daughter has gone three times with me now, and this was the first year for my oldest son.  It was a mixed bag of blessings for sure!

You know, family dynamics change when you leave half of the family at home.  It is hard to leave those behind who aren't old enough to attend, but it was good for all of us.  A dear friend with kids their ages, kept the two younger ones.  The first day they volunteered at a food/clothing pantry.  That was hard work for them, but a great experience!  The second day they played!  According to the kids, it was a great time of pretending and free play time.  That is awesome!  I am so thankful for that.

Now, those of us who went to the conference, well, we got in on some good speakers but we also did some impromptu volunteering there.  We helped a friend who is a homeschool speaker.  We helped carry magazines and pass them out, we helped setting up some cameras and we helped at the booth.  It wasn't really planned, but we had a great time.  Some new friendships were built while we did that!

I was able to say hello to several wonderful homeschool moms from my hometown who were at the conference.  Several of them are ladies that I only run into a few times a year, but it is alway so great to see them.  They help encourage me and lift me up with their kindness every time I see them.  Isn't God good?

Home is always a good place to be though, and we are thankful to be here.  We've hit the ground running with projects to finish, things to do and places to be.  Yesterday though, I just went out into our little front yard and sprawled out on the green grass.  It was heavenly!  I don't  think I have done that since I was a kid.  What a way to refresh one's soul.

Well, I wrote quite a bit more over on my regular blog about the conference, if you want to know more.  And just to let you know, my hair cutting e-book is on special!   I lowered the price for Cindy Rushton's expo and it will be staying at the special price for awhile, even if you aren't an expo member.  What a deal!

Sum, sum, summer-time!

Nancy

I love attending our home school convention - it's always a great boost of encouragement for me. I am thinking about bringing my daughter next year as the conference holds special workshops just for teens!

Thanks for promoting GOING TO CONFERENCES!

Every homeschooler needs to go and hear the messages being presented at all of these.
We need encouragement and to be informed.

Homeschool Conventions

10:29 AM, Jun. 25, 2008, posted by Jennie
I've been homeschooling for three years now, a going into the 5th grader. He is really enjoying it now, more than ever I think. He sees more benefits to homeschooling than he was experiencing last year. We are blessed to live in a community where the homeschool population is growing. We're very rural so he can learn many things not available in a public/private/group school setting. That said I attended a convention prior to our initial homeschool experience which is what truly sold me on the lifestyle. Last year is the first time my husband and son attended one and now it will be an annual event for our family. What an eye opener for both of them. My husband, though very academic himself, leaves the academics to me and teaches Jonathan lots of outdoor lessons; i.e. Scouting, (I do 4-H with him, though), camping, gardening, sports, swimming, biking, missions, etc. We've encouraged him to spread his wings and accept challenges he receives from the Lord during church sermons, daily devotions, etc. As a result he is the point man for collecting the aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, encourages Freerice.com game playing in order to feed the hungry, and is in August launching his own Enewsletter designed especially for young people. I think the confidence he's received through homeschooling has allowed him the ability to think outside the box and the visit to the convention last year with the anticipation of attending this year in August is very much of great importance to him. For anyone who has not attended a convention I would recommend that you make the effort to attend. As we all know, if you are not in a community group of homeschoolers it sometimes seems as though 'we're the only ones'. Not true! There are multitudes out there, you just can't always see them. Attending the conventions is an eye opener and lets you see that there is a gamut of choices for not only the homeschooler's educational needs but for the entire family, as well.
Thanks - may seem that I'm rambling - hope not, just love the conventions and exposing my entire family to them.
God bless you as you continue to flourish in your educational choices!
