When you wake up to a beautiful day, toss the schedule to the winds and head out into nature. It's a relief to the mind after having been stuck indoors for most of the winter. This week, the Porch team will share all of their nature walking/notebooking tips to encourage you.
Now, I love going on nature walks and my family hikes as often as we can. We observe what we can: rocks, sticks, grasses, trees, the occasional flower, and sometimes we are blessed to not have stepped on the snake in the path, or get bitten by some over friendly chipmunk. On the whole though, we don't discover anything too fantastic.
It's rather disheartening for me to read some of the blogs where families went out on a hike and discovered a gorgeous mushroom, a rare botanical speciman, or entire herd of elk that calmly grazes in some poetical setting, allowing the family to watch them until the sun goes down. They have memories to last them for as long as their minds work, and they discuss how everything is intricately woven together. I'm very happy for them mind you, I just have no idea how they manage to do it.
My family comes home with bug bites to remind them of the hike, whines about blisters (that would be me), and we have 200 photos of unfocused leaves, and one very extreme close up of my son's nostril. Amazingly, it is focused perfectly.
Yet, we try time and again, to go out and find something that we can come home and brag about on our blogs. Call it a treasure hunt of nature, if you will. We're just a bunch of failed, nature, treasure hunters, but it's the thrill of the hunt that lures us back time and again. Why? God isn't only in breath taking fungus, awe inspiring flora, or regal fauna. You can see his handywork in bark, bees, and the hundreds of sticks that my boys pick up along the way. All of nature has His signature. It is truly amazing. Don't miss out on the adventure of exploring His natural world!
Thank you for the encouragement. Our nature walks pretty much consist of walking out our door and along a major freeway. But, sometimes, on hubby's dayoff, we go out into the woods or a park. So, they are definitely nothing to blog about. But... they are ours! Have a great week.
