This week's column was supposed to be about Nature Walks and Notebooks, but as you can see, I've taken a bit of poetic license. There is a method to my madness, so stick with me a bit. It's actually a short, but powerful point I wish to make this week.
As we become more aware of God's beautiful world, we tend to slow down and take note of the little things. We smell the roses which, in our time-conscious modern world, we have all but forgotten. It's the little things that can make all the difference when communicating with someone. It's the smile from across the street that others will remember with fondness that creates a chain of benevolence, that keeps going long after you have reached your destination. It sets off a natural chain of events that grows with each person and can change an entire neighborhood's outlook that day.
These random acts of kindness evoke a natural response that spreads joy wherever it goes. It is human nature to react to negative with negative, and positive with positive. It's only natural that we return kindness with grace. It's the nature of our soul to crave to give out of what we have received.
So the next time you are out in nature, notice the small things the Lord has put here for us to enjoy, and feel His spirit speak to you. Then return that grace and beauty to others you meet. It's only natural!
