Tuesday Tips - Reading to your children, with your children, etc...

7:02 PM, Jan. 16, 2006

Last Friday, my local homeschool support group had our curriculum round table discussion.  For that meeting we get a few moms to commit to bringing curriculum that they love as a show & tell, but then everyone at the meeting just throws in their 2 cents too!

We went through all of the main subjects letting everyone give their recommendations, but you know what kept being echoed time and time again?

Read to your kids, read with your kids, get your kids great books to read!!!

Some of our moms shared their favorite titles for books that give recommendations on books and others shared their family's favorite books.  I've got to say that as a Sonlight user, I am constantly wowed by some of the books we read!  Last year  was on our list.  I finally bought our own copy and WOW that is a must read.  So inspirational.  It's one of those books that comes to mind very often and I want to reread so that I don't forget the details.

If you are looking for a book that will suggest other great books to read, Kate Kessler and her gang at TOSOnline Lab has a couple of reviews that you'll want to read.   Books Children Love by Elizabeth Wilson and Best Books for Kindergarten through High School from Bob Jones University Press Publishers.

Oh and they are having a contest that you'll want to enter while you're over there too!  All you have to do is comment there about why you love the Draw, Write, Now books and 4 randomly drawn commenters will each win a FREE Draw, Write, Now Book 6!

Meanwhile... Do you have a favorite book that recommends great books that will interest your kids?  Do you have some suggestions for different ages or reluctant readers?  For instance, it took a while to find books that my 13 year old son would read for pleasure, but once we found we found what he loves to read!  What have been your favorite read alouds for your family?  What are some great books for beginning readers?  I was so excited when we found A is for Adam and D is for Dinosaur from Answers in Genesis.

So take a few minutes to comment here and share your favorite tips for books with us on the porch.  Remember the first five commenters get our *featured blogger* button.

I really liked the Rod and Staff books for very beginning to read children (but beyond Bob books). They are sweet and wholesome. We love the Wisdom and the Miller books for read aloud. The Pathway readers have been good for our beginning reader as well. I also like the Sisters in Time series. There are boys in it too so it's not just a girl book. I love the historical aspect of these books. I read these aloud because they are a little beyond my girls abilities. One of my favorite read alouds is Happy Times in Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren.

My kids are still young yet so most of our books have been "easy". We really enjoy the Dr. Seuss books. My kids also enjoy the Berenstain Bears series. We have been doing Sonlight this year and we've enjoyed Charlotte's Web, The Boxcar Children, and Missionary Stories With the Miller's. My kids have specifically requested for me to get other books from the Boxcar series and we've read 1 more so far.

Monthly Book Bins

6:58 AM, Jan. 17, 2006, posted by harvestmoon
On the first day of each month, my daughters (ages 5 and 3) each receive their monthly book bin. In the bin are a variety of books that they can read and enjoy for one month...before they are put away and a new bin comes out.

Each bin has a variety of books: seasonal (e.g., January has books about snow), chapter, just for fun, poetry, adoption (both are adopted), self-esteem, cultural diversity, animals, nature, holiday, about their hobbies (e.g., ballet, gymnastics), etc. Also, there are back-issues of magazines (e.g., Animal Baby, Highlights).

The girls' love seeing the "new" books each month, and are eager to look at the pictures and be read to. There are approximately 20-50 books/magazines each month.

The bins are supplemental to books that stay on their shelves year round (e.g., religious, series books they enjoy, and other ones they love and don't want to put away). We also go to the library once a week so they can choose books that aren't in their collection.

My girls LOVE reading

We would have a hard time narrowing down our favorites but I will try. We did Five in a Row the first 3 or 4 years and some of our favorites there were "Who Owns the Sun?", "Ping", "All Those Secrets of the World", "Mirette on the High Wire" and many more. On their own, my girls enjoy the Boxcar Children series, The A-Z Mysteries, and American Girls. As a family, we are currently enjoying many of the books from Lamplighter Publishers such as Jill's Red Bag & Stick to the Raft. There are too many good books out there and not enough time!

I order from AIG ALL THE TIME. And have a lot of great books from there... my eye has been on the A is for adam and d is for dinosaur for a long time... but I have yet to order those. I just always pick others instead... I might just have to toss those on my next order...

Our favorite read alouds...

Some of our favorite read alouds have been from Lamplighter Publishing. I like to read aloud each morning from a good character-building book and we have a long list of favorites. In fact, we are always finding a new "favorite"!

I, too, am always on the look out for books my boys will decide to pick up and read for fun. So far, I'm not having as much luck in that area. Oh, they'll pick up books, but most of them are what I would consider "twaddle". What's a mom to do!?! :-)

Blessings,
Cindy

for very young children, Dorling Kindersley has the bestest books for numbers and letters. Bright colors and real photographs intrigued my children more than any of the cartoony stuff we had. In fact, I'm not so sure we don't actually have to train our children to prefer the cartoons, seeing as none of my children showed much interest in that illustration style until they were quite a bit older.
