On a serious note: Do you use a video or computer curriculum? How do you like it?

On a lighthearted note: What's your funny homeschool story?

As homeschoolers we have a lot of responsibility on our shoulders, but let's not take things so seriously that we forget to enjoy things along the way.

the only video curriculum i have used is math-u-see.

when my little girls were even littler we were in the car and the littlest one held up two straws and announced she had made an H with her straws. her big sister said, "she didn't make an H she made a V. she doesn't even know what an H is." the little one spoke up, "i do to know what an H is. i know my abcdefg's, i learned that song!"

Computer Curriculum

We are currently using Swiched-On Schoolhouse with our fourth grade son. He loves technology and has an affinity for using computers. This is his first year homeschooling, and part of our decision to educate him ourselves was because he has had ongoing learning issues with language (due to chronic ear infections as a baby). Each year he seemed to fall a little further behind and was overlooked because he's shy and quiet, and therefore slipped under the radar. The computer curriculum is great in that it is quite motivating for him. It gives him immediate feedback and for the first time, he is really trying to do his best. The reading portion is still difficult for him, but there is an option to have the text read out loud so that he can read along with it. My only hesitation in recommending it, is the potential for the child to be too isolated in his learning. I find myself sitting with him frequently, and going through it together. Overall, so far I think it is a good fit, but I feel strongly that no curriculum is a one-size-fits all choice. His older sister is an avid reader and loves her literature-based classical (no computer) curriculum. That is the beauty of homeschooling - you can really truly meet the needs of each child!

Todd Wilson and Family Man Web is one of my favorite hsing speakers.

We use DIVE cds for Math and sometimes Quartermile Math. I LOVE the DIVE cds.

A funny hsing story. Hmmmm, my kids are out of that cute, funny age. So I'll have to think about that one LOL. Right now my mind is filled with algebra and fractions and there is nothing funny about that LOL.

We don't use a computer program, per se, but we do use the computer and the educational games we have. My favorite is from Discovery Toys. It came with 4 CDs. It has a Ms Spider game, the "A told B and B told C, I'll meet you at the top of the Coconut Tree" song (it's the book set to music and video). My kids love that one. It's been a favorite with all three boys.

Our lives seem to revolve around funny homeschool stories. As I'm trying to find how each child learns I discovered that allowing my 5 year old to listen to his TBone CD while doing his writing and copy work yields fantastic neat work. And I just discovered this yesterday. I think each homeschooling family has a funny story every day. It's just the comic relief God knows we need to keep on plugging away at what He's set on our hearts.

We use the DIVE cd's that correlate to Saxon Math - they are INCREDULOUS!!! I have Switched On Schoolhouse for an extra-curricular....but I've not been very successful in using it.....it's rather complex ~ maybe just me.

We use the computer for tons of Internet research - AND to reserve books from the library via online statewide - this is a huge service for us since we live so rural and our local branch is no more than a drop off/collection point. Big time saver.

Funny Story

I'm remaining anonymous because to tell this story I have to actually tell my son's name, and in my blog he is anonymous. This is one of my favorite stories to tell:

While studying latin roots my children had learned that if you know the root you can probably figure out the meaning of a new word. One day a new word came up and my son Travis didn't know what is meant. He asked, "What does travesty mean?" My oldest daughter piped up, "That's a tragedy caused by Travis!"

Teaching Textbooks

Not a complete computer curriculum, but all the instruction is on CD rom (as well as in the books). The tone is fun and conversational and the vernacular is understandable to my daughter. And it has the solution to EVERY problem and shows & tells how to work it out. DD loves Algebra and is getting A's. Well worth the money.
