Contest ~ What is Your Favorite Animal?

12:41 PM, Jun. 20, 2009

Boys and Girls!

We have a contest just for you!

Are you crazy about critters?

How many pets do you have?

Do you love bears, elephants, iguanas, toucans,

dogs, or grasshoppers?

We're celebrating our newest series of E-Books entitled the WannaBe Series. In each exciting E-Book you'll discover a new occupation and meet someone with that very job!

In one of the E-Books, readers meet a veterinarian and learn all there is to know about becoming a vetrinarian. Since vets work with animals, we decided to have a contest for you about your favorite animal.

Here is what we need you to do:

1. Tell us your favorite animal.
2. Then, share one fun fact about that animal. You can share more
than one fact--we love learning here on HSB! One entry per
    child, please.
3. Next, be sure to give us the link to your mom or dad's blog or
email so we can notify you if you win!

Just post your response right here, and you'll be entered to win one of two prizes. We're giving away 2 Ladybug Land insect kits from Insect Lore!

Please post your entry by midnight EST on Sunday, June 28th. Two winners will be drawn at random.

These kits are GREAT fun! Even Mom and Dad will enjoy watching the larvae go through metamorphosis and turn into cute ladybugs! Then, release the ladybugs in your yard or a nearby park--they are beneficial insects.

Check out the InsectLore website for more information on their products and to play some games, too!

Doesn't that look like so much fun? Be sure to enter so your name can be entered into the drawing for one of these cool prizes.

Check out all of the titles in the WannabeSeries™

My favorite animal is the kitten. We found out these interesting facts about them: # A litter of kittens is called a kindle, and a group of cats is called a clowder.

# A cat's IQ is only surpassed by that of monkeys and chimps in the world of animals.

# Cats are the only animals that purr. They can purr at around 26 cycles per second, which is the same frequency as an idling diesel engine.

# Purring doesn't necessarily mean a cat is happy. Sometimes cats will purr when they are scared or hurt.

# A cat's nose pad is as unique as a human fingerprint. No two nose prints are identical.

How cool!

Contest ~ What is Your Favorite Animal?

10:24 AM, Jun. 26, 2009, posted by Chris
1. My favorite animal is the dog. They are fun to be around and can be trained to many things that help people.
2. An interesting fact about dog's is that their nose prints are unique like a human’s finger print. Their nose print can be used to identify them. Another fact about dog's is that they can see in color. They are not color blind. The colors they see are not as strong or as bright, like the way we see them. For us, I guess, it would be like looking at color with shades on.

I learned that just 30 years ago there were 100,000 mountain zebras and now there are only 2,000. I think that is very sad. Meerkats are one of my favorite animals. They are squirrel sized animals that live in groups on the southern African plains. The Alpha female often doesn't let the other females in her clan breed and if they do she will often kill their pups. They have territories of about 5 miles and spend most of their time foraging for food. Their burrows have big tunnel systems.

Josh (age 8):
Wolves The wolf is the largest of the canine family and live in packs. Their pups are born in April or May. The main threat to wolves are loss of habitat.

Daniel (age 5):
My favorite animals are cats because they are cute and cuddly. Cats make good pets and live on farms and in the city. I think that they used to worship cats in Egypt.

Jonathan (age 3):

We learned one way a cat shows how he trust you is by rolling over on his/her back. They drink liquid from the under part of there tongue. I also learned that my sister and I are ailurophiles, because we love cats.
