Special Words for Special Needs ~ Friendship a Worthy Goal!

Friendship is the buzz this week around the Porch. Friendship was pale to me, a nice relationship that I could take or leave. For the past few months part of my devotional time has been reading Proverbs. Friendship is so much more. A true friend is a comforter, closer than a brother, a truthful critic, devoted, an intercessor, and a source of strength. These are most worthy things that I desire to pass on to my children.
As you know kids that learn outside the norm are at a disadvantage socially. Children with higher IQs struggle with an age/intellect difference. Homeschooling can help this. Instead of grade/age levels you can help your child join subject oriented groups. An astronomy group would be a good example.
Children who naturally struggle with social interactions such as children of the autism spectrum will also do well homeschooling. I have had many doctors question my homeschooling "children with autism need to socialize" Yes we all need social interaction. With homeschooling you will be able to craft social groups and interactions that have a high probability to succeed. I do not buy the idea that your child needs to be toughened up. A child with autism needs to be handled with care. They need to be taught social cues and the rules of society that the rest of us naturally pick up. This may take time. Relax progress is what you are aiming for the finish line will come.
Friendship may take extra work for our children and us. In the end it is just as important a goal as mathematics. The Lord details what a wonderful gift friendship is.
"Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you." John 15:15
There is a great place to start for friendship!
A friend loveth at all times, Proverbs 17:17
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise Proverbs 13:20
