Contest for Children! Win a fun horse book!

1:26 PM, Sep. 15, 2009
Boys and Girls!

We have a another contest just for you!

Are you crazy about horses?

Do you know the difference between a Deli pony and an Australian pony? (We don't here on the Porch!)

We're celebrating our newest release in our WannaBe series of E-Books- WannaBe: Military. In each exciting E-Book you'll discover a new occupation and meet someone with that very job. Learn about veterinarians, doctors, chefs, soldiers, and firefighters!

In one of the E-Books, readers meet a veterinarian and learn all there is to know about becoming a veterinarian. Since vets work with horses, and we have two copies of a fun horse book to give away, we decided to have a contest for you about horses.

Here is what we need you to do:

    1. Tell us your favorite horse or pony breed.

    2. Then share one fun fact about that breed. You can share more
than one fact--we love learning here on HSB! One entry per
        child, please.

    3. Next, be sure to give us the link to your mom or dad's blog or
email so we can notify you if you win!

The contest starts NOW! and ends Sunday, September 20 at midnight EST.

We will draw two names, each name drawn will win a copy of Sonrise Stable: Rosie and Scamper by Vicki Watson.

You can read abou the book by clicking here.

Enjoy an excerpt by clicking here.

You can visit the author's Web site here: http://www.christiancowgirl.net/.
Check out the puzzles, games, and  other activities available on the Christian Cowgirl site.

Have fun and happy learning!

My favorite horse breed is a Morgan. Standing between 14.2 and 15.2hh (57-61 in.), the Morgan is bay, brown, chestnut, or black in color. It is spirited, intelligent, and laert but has a good temperament and is easy to handle. Morgans come from the eastern states of Massachusetts and Vermont. They are descended from a stallion born in 1789, called Justin Morgan after its owner. This horse worked ion the farm and raced both in harness and under saddle.
Morgans are my favorite because I prayed and prayed for a horse and God answered my prayer and now I have a very good kids horse named "Belle!"

Horse Book Contest!! I LOVE horses!!!!

Hi. My name is Abby, and I'm 11 years old. I am an avid horse AND book lover!!!

I love the Falabella. It is a dog-sized horse (not a pony), and it can even live in a dog house with a dog bowl in place of a trough. They are more commonly used by blind people as seeing-horses. You can hold a Falabella on your lap, which would be impossible if you tried to do the same thing with a horse or pony! Falabellas come in the same colors as most horses and ponies, which include chestnut, black, pinto, grey, and dapple, to name a few. I first saw a Falabella on a playing card with a coat like a pinto's. I am going to have one when I get older.

Thank you for the opportunity to enter this contest. I hope I am chosen as one of the winners!

Well I love the Arabian most because their temperament is outstanding, even toward children. The Arabian is about 14-15 hands high and is the oldest purebred in the world going back 2,000 years. Many other breeds were created from this breed and this they sometimes have one less rib and one less tail vertebra then other breeds. Arabians have black skin but most of the time it does not show.

I LOVE Horses!!!

1:31 PM, Sep. 18, 2009, posted by Kathleen
My favorite horse breed is the mustang. Mustangs are known for how smart they are and the colors they come in. They come in all the colors of the horse rainbow. Their name comes from the Spanish word "mesteno" meaning stray. Mustangs are usually small but sometimes they can be tall if they have some draft blood in them, (which they could because they are a mix of horse breeds). Their use is mainly for western riding, herding cattle and sometimes for endurance racing. A government agency called the Bureau of Land Management rounds up mustangs every few years to keep from in-breeding. If people want to adopt a wild horse they can go to a auction and place money down to adopt them. If you ever see a wild horse you will notice on their left side a white mark that is some sort of writing. This mark helps the Bureau of Land Management tell who the horse belongs to, how old it is, and what state it came from. When you first get your mustang you will want to treat it with respect. Then after days of seeing that you bring the food and water he/she needs you will form a bond with the animal. Soon he/she will do anything you ask of him/her, (unless it goes against its wild instinct.)

I love the Clydesdale. They are very strong. I like the hair around their hooves. It looks like they are wearing fuzzy boots. In the 20"s and 30's they were bred to be more compact. Today the demand is for taller horses. They range in size from 16.2 to 18 hands and weigh between 1600 and 1800 pounds. Preferred markings on a clydesdale are four white socks to the knees and hocks and a well defined blaze or bald face. They are good for draft horses, for show or just for fun!

My favorite horse breed is the American Quarter Horse. When Spanish horses were brought to America they were
bred with thoroughbreds. The Spanish horses were small and very muscular. The thoroughbreds were tall and lean. The result was the American Quarter Horse, taller than the Spanish horses and shorter than the thoroughbred. They
got their name because they were better than the thoroughbreds at the quarter of a mile.

Sorry this is a couple of hours late. I did not realize the time it ended, and we are overseas so the time difference is sometimes confusing. If you can use my entry great, if not then I had fun sharing!

My name is Jersha Price and we are a military family living in Turkey.

My favorite breed is Pinto. Pinto usually refers to the coloring of the horse and not the breed. They can be black and white, chestnut, and brown and white. The main is usually the same color as the hair on their neck. The name pinto comes from the Spanish word pintado, which means painted.

This is my favorite breed because I like the spots on them!
