Monday (Home) Makings - Control Journals

12:02 AM, Feb. 6, 2006

One of my good friends is flying with the Flylady. She's been working on developing her control journal.  Do any of you keep one of those?  I have kept something similar over the years before I knew that there was a name for it.  I just had a 3 ring binder where I put any of the kids phone lists or schedules from sports or clubs, along with a paper where I listed my online passwords, important papers, calendar, etc... Pretty much if the boys need to know a number or check a date, they can go to that notebook and find out what they need to know. If you want to learn about the Flylady's official control journal, click here.

Another friend mentioned that she has a master calendar where they have listed all of their home maintenance tasks so that they can keep up with things like changing air filters, oil in the cars, maintaining the mower, etc...

What about you all?  What do you use to keep up with important phone numbers, dates and routines around your home?  Share with us on the porch!

The first five to comment will receive the "Featured on the Front Porch" button. To make it quicker for us to award you your button, we'd like to ask you to include your email in your comment in this format (so that it will not easily be grabbed up by those email-seeking programs) - yourname-at-yourserver.com ... or you can email me letting me know you commented (my email is below: just replace the -at- with the @ symbol!)

Control Journal

8:17 AM, Feb. 6, 2006, posted by lindafay
I can't recommend Flylady's journal idea enough. I always considered myself a pretty organized person, but after trying out flylady's zone cleaning ideas, and especially her control journal suggestions, I can honestly say my our home organization has changed for the better and my peace of mind is 'in place.' My kids get a real kick out of my control journal and call it 'Mom's brain.' The only drawback back about it is that if I ever misplaced it, well... I would be rendered senseless! Everything is in it -- meal lists and weekly menus, cleaning lists, addresses, home evacuation plans, family clothing sizes, gift lists, projects, moving plans...the list goes on. I did do one neat thing to mine that was not mentioned. I put everything in page protectors and use a wet erase pen to mark off what gets done, or what meals we have eaten for the month, etc... it saves time and paper. Another good source is "Family Manager" by Kathy Peel; she has a couple more books that followed - She has a web site also familymanager.com. Her first book has master lists of home maintenance and so forth.

I don't follow fly-lady, however I do keep a home management binder. I have several weeks worth of menus and shop lists in there, daily to-do lists and calenders, important phone numbers, window measurements in each room, paint information for each room, homemade cleaner recipes and tips. I have many many recipes in here also, and will actually be transferring those to their own binder. It's just way too thick to deal with because I have mega recipes. Things like friends/family members' birthdates and other special occasions are put into my calander, so I can see at a glance who to print a card for, or give a special phone call to. I have my bible reading schedule in there as well. I have our state homeschool laws printed and in their own section, with inspiring articles, and resources I would like to check into more deeply.Everything that i refer to often, or will make our family run smoother is included in here. I add to it often.

How timely!

This is so timely. I spent my weekend considering starting a binder like that. I am unsure where to start, however. I have done the flylady thing in the past, but just sort of got out of the habit. Now that I'm home again (where I belong! Whoohoo!) I want to figure out a routine to follow. My chidren have gone to visit Grandma for the first part of this week and I intend to get my little ducks in a row while they are gone. Thanks for the links and info!

I use a combination...white board on the fridge, and a coil notebook which also doubles as a budget book. Monthly things to pay attention to get marked on (transfered to) the bedroom calendar.
