Tuesday Tips - Support group banquets

4:15 PM, Feb. 5, 2006

Do any of your homeschool support groups have end of the year banquets or fellowships?  I have heard of some groups having them to recognize the first year families, the graduating seniors, and just homeschooling in general.  My support group is going to have one this year, our first.

Can you all tell me about yours or ones that you've heard about?  What were the best parts?  How well attended was it?  Was it formal or casual?  I want to hear all about it.

Also, do any of you know where I can find a book or website that has skits for just a few kids? We want our kids to provide the entertainment.

The first five to comment will receive the "Featured on the Front Porch" button. To make it quicker for us to award you your button, we'd like to ask you to include your email in your comment in this format (so that it will not easily be grabbed up by those email-seeking programs) - yourname-at-yourserver.com ... or you can email me letting me know you commented (my email is below: just replace the -at- with the @ symbol!)

SG Banquets

When I was leading a fairly large (100+ families) support group, one of the biggest hits was the Daddy-Daughter dinner. The dads and their daughters dressed up, dad gave the daughter flowers, and then the took them to the fellowship hall where a banquet was catered. During the evening, some of the daughters and dads did skits. Well attended!

End of the year promotion ceremony

4:59 PM, Feb. 7, 2006, posted by Nevada homeschool blog
At our old homeschool group we had about 15 families. We had the promotion ceremony at our church and a really wonderful potluck dinner afterwards. We gave out promotion cetificates with the child's own bible verse that the parents had to come up with months in advance. We had one highschool graduate the first time, it was a night dedicated to this great young man. We also had diplomas for the kindergarteners. It was a nice time and we will always remember it.

End Of The Year Celebrations

Hi there. I don't know if I'm repsponding correctly to this but our support group, Ridge Meadows Christian Homeschoolers has a barbeque to finish off the year. It is a casual affair and usually held at a water park. I like the idea of honouring graduates. That is usually handled at the British Columbia Homeschool Convention, where all graduates are honoured and have a cap and gown ceremony.

As far as the skits go, if you just google search for example "free, downloadable skits for few actors" you will find a world of free resources. This is what I do for our Sunday School classes to reinforce lessons. A couple links to get you started are:

http://psalm121.ca/drama.html
http://42explore.com/skits&plays.htm

Hope that helps. You can find me at www.homeschoolblogger.com/mayglitch

Blessings,
Barb.

End of Year Party

12:18 PM, Feb. 8, 2006, posted by
I'm sorry. I misread the question. (Boy, haven't I heard that before from my kids about their answers on tests!) Anyway, please forgive me for writing a dumb answer to your question - see other entry. An end of year party for only the Dads and Daughters would NOT be attended very well! I'll try to answer more intelligently this time!

We had a complete graduation service at the end of the year with guest speaker, awards, cap and gowns, light refreshments and fellowship afterwards. We graduated the K-11th grade kids first in groups with each group coming up and receiving a certificate. The support group leader gave out these certificates. These children then went back to sit with their parents. (This keep them from getting out of hand in a group up front the whole service.)

Then a couple of the kids would do a skit or sing or play an instrument as part of the worship service and/or as a stand alone "talent." These children would be chosen by the leadership of the Outreach Teams (Nursing Home ministry that did puppets, drama, & music). Thank you were given for volunteers including any gifts for workers. I can't remember what else right now but there were some other odds and ends we did at this time. Anyway, at the end of the service, the seniors walked "Pomp and Circumstance" down the aisles and received their diplomas that we had prepared and the parents had signed ahead of time. The parents of each senior handed the diploma to their child and then gave a brief statement to the audience about their child (we had them script it to make sure it didn't get too long!).

A favorite part for many of the moms was the Portfolio Display. Each family brought their portfolios to display during graduation. It was so much fun seeing what other people had done. It even became a competition of sorts with the scrapbooking moms always trying to outdo everyone else. As the leader, I always brought my very normal-looking portfolios to make the rest of us feel better!

I hope that helps. Again, sorry for the goof up! Cindy Downes
