Monday (Home)Making -What are your favorite household cleaners?

2:21 PM, Feb. 12, 2006

As someone who doesn't especially enjoy housecleaning, I want to use the best products that will clean effectively and quickly. I want to do the job and get it done ASAP. Or have my kids do it.

I read Nancy Baetz's suggestion for praying while you clean and I think that's a pretty good suggestion to take some of the drudgery out of the chore.

I have some friends who clean houses on the side and they have pointed me towards some products that have made cleaning easier. But I want to know what your favorites are! What do you use to clean your shower/bathtub? What do you use to clean your floors - wood, linoleum or tile? What do you use to clean counters? Do you have a favorite window cleaner? Do you make your own? What time saving tips do you have for cleaning?

We want to hear from you! Remember the first five commenters will get the Featured Blogger button for their blog. To help us get the button to you, please leave your email addy in your post in this (spam proof) format - ncarter-at-thehomeschoolmagazine.com. If you don't leave your addy, then we'll assume that you already have the Featured button.

Have a great day!

My FAVORITE Cleaner...

2:38 PM, Feb. 13, 2006, posted by
is this thing that is made for the microwave. I HATE how everyone else cooks stuff that splatters all over inside and then leaves it to bake on further in the next go-round.

So, this pouch of stuff (Pledge made it) would go in and you "cook" it and it would pop and steam out cleaner....then you'd take the wipey thing out of the pouch and wipe down the inside.

I haven't found these lately at WalMart, but I am trying to figure out a way to do them myself. My older kids can then clean the micro too!!

Method, all the way!

5:46 PM, Feb. 13, 2006, posted by MelM
My favorite cleaning products are made by Method. I originally got them on sale at Target, and the more of their stuff I try, the more I like it. I recently picked up their new bathroom surface wipes, which are pretty stinkin' cool! You can read more about how I discovered Method at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/MelM/1938 and http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/MelM/2496 . The only Method items I don't like so far are their body wash/shower gel tubes. Not that they didn't work, but I didn't like the scents as much as I enjoy the products I usually get elsewhere.
I also use a non-toxic laundry powder from Planet...have been using that for more than 5 years now and still love it. NO perfumes or dyes!
Hope it's of assistance.

All Purpose Homemade Cleaner

I mix up a combination of vinegar, orange oil cleanser (like Orange Clean), and water. I use it to sanitize tables, countertops, stovetops, clean up marker on my table, etc. It really works on so many things. The orange oil cleaner is very concentrated and I put the mixture in a spray bottle to make it easier to use. The first bottle lasted me a couple years, because you have to add so little of the orange oil cleaner. I don't really measure ingredients. Just find what will work for you.

I use Sunlight liquid dish soap for most things-- windows, walls, floors... it's easy on allergies. I also use those Magic Erasers-- those things are simply amazing! No smell, not hard on the hands, inexpensive, and work like a charm (hence, "magic"?). For the dishwasher we were using Calgonite but switched. Just tried those Electrosol powerball tab things and my dishes are clean the first time. Cool concept.

For sinks, toilets, and the tub I use a no-name cream cleanser (like Vim, only cheaper). I also spray the grout with bleach occasionally.

I polish wood with olive oil.

Zoom Boss....I think it's called The Boss now. It's a red liquid and I think Ace Hardware is the only place you can find it. It will clean anything. I love it.

Those Mr Clean Erasers clean my walls wonderfully and my tub and my microwave. I just put a damp paper towel in the microwave, loosen all that stuck on stuff, and wipe it away. They work wonderfuly on soap scum too.

Hard wood floors? Orange Glo has a wonderful new product made by Bona X. The make a professional floor cleaning product my mom has used. They make this product for Orange Glo. The floor refinisher is great and made my hardwood floors look newly finished. They also make a cleaner to use in between.

The Bissell Little Green Machine does wonders on carpets. I like the cleaner for it that is for Pet Odors.

Those are my favorites.
Happy Cleaning
Julie
