Tuesday's Tips - Algebra

Algebra can be kind of tough for some kids (and for some parents for that matter). Have any of you found an Algebra program that you really like? There are a few that I've heard about, but haven't gotten to see in person like

Jacobs' Elementary Algebra and Teaching Textbooks.

What algebra programs, computer programs or supplemental materials have you used? Did you like them? What seemed to work best for your child?

Just wondering if anyone uses Chalkdust Math for Pre-Algebra or Algebra? What do you think if you do? We use Horizon's now and are in the process of searching for a condensed 7th and 8th grade math program.

Teaching Textbooks

We used this program this year and absolutely love it!!!

It has explanations for every single problem except test problems.
The lessons were real world examples of how you would use algebra in everyday life. This really helped keep my daughters interest. Math is not her favorite subject.

We are using Saxon's Algebra 1/2, and will continue with their Algebra 1 and 2. The reason I like this program is that each lesson has some review problems. This helps the students to keep everything fresh in their minds.

I just wanted to add that we got our eighth grader a math tutor. College Prep Algebra was beyond my husband and I. Our son also utilizes an online tutoring service. Both sources have really helped him.

We are using Video Text Algebra and my DS loves it and is moving through it at a fast pace. It's hard to descrbe...but they teach they "whys" and don't teach fancy shortcuts. It reminds me of the good ole fashioned math I learned way back when. The video lessons are very clear. Then, there are usually only 10 problems in the lesson...which makes it seem less overwhelming for DS. BUT, there are more practice problems on the website. I also like the tests...there are 2 tests for every 3-4 sections. I"ll give DS the first one, if he does well, we don't do the second one. I usually save the second one as a review. We'll go back 2-3 weeks later, and I'll give the second test as a refresher or as a gauge to see if he really did learn the material. Plus, we've gone through 3 modules, and I've yet to find a solution that was worked incorrectly. (p.s. I already have the button, I just wanted to share our experience with this program.)

Video Text Algebra

My two teens and I are doing Video Text Algebra and so far we love it. I say WE are doing it because I didn't do too well with math in school so I'm learning right along with them. They have a toll free number you can call if you need help but so far we haven't had to call. We did Saxon Math 8/7 last year and my son's complaint was that they only gave a few new problems and then lots of review. He wanted to master the new before reviewing the old. He's much happier with Video Text. It's a bit pricey but it's non-consumable so you can use it with all of your children and it is two courses, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.
