Tuesday Tips - Contest for a FREE book!

Lorraine Curry is just the sweetest thing. She contacted me and wanted to offer some of her books as prizes on The Company Porch. Lorraine is all about Easy Homeschooling. She gives lots of advice about keeping things simple and oftentimes FREE!! Her site is really wonderful. You'll want to check it out.

Anyway, I thought it would be nice to get some tips from you all on keeping things simple. This can kind of be the homeschool burnout time of year, plus many are already making plans for next year. What do you do to keep things simple in your homeschool?

A Good and Easy Idea

I know I can't win my own book, nor do I need one, LOL, so I will be the first to share an Easy Homeschooling tip. :) Yes, there are LOTS more tips in the book!

A very good and easy thing to do with your children is to read aloud from a good or classic book. After reading for a period of time, have each child, from youngest to oldest narrate (tell back) as you write their dated and identified narration in a notebook. Another option is to have older children write their narrations after the reading. The bonus in reading aloud together is the bonding of the family—this is something you can do when Daddy is home too!

Keeping things simple...

Well, I'm fairly new at "organized" homeschooling, although I feel like we have "unschooled" our son since birth (isn't this just parenting?). I am not the most organized, and as stated in my blog entry today, I'm terrible at keeping to a schedule! However, on the days that things go smoothly, the key has always been getting up before my son does and having time to myself first thing in the morning! As a stay-at-home mom, I just don't get much time for myself, so I cherish these mornings that I'm able to get up, have my quiet time with the Lord, drink my coffee, get a little exercise, take a shower, start a load of laundry, and set out books and supplies for the homeschool day. It's amazing how much easier my day goes when I am able to have these things done before my son even gets up! I'm more relaxed, I'm a better mom and teacher, and things just go more smoothly. Now...if only I could do that every day! I'd be "super woman"! :)

When we are getting overwhelmed or burned out, we take a break from "regular" schoolwork and either toss in an exciting unit study or do some learning from real life. We have been known to spend a week with a different emphasis on each day. One day we will do nothing but read. The next day will be all science experiments. The next day we cook, but double or half all the recipes. Or we will go on fun field trips. Or I'll let the crew play educational games all day. It helps to just toss the books and relax for a while.

Spring is coming soon, so I'll give you an appropriate tip: stay outside as much as possible! You get in all that great nature study automatically, and you save messing up your house, which simplifies the housecleaning.

Now, If I just post nonsense comments until #14, would I win the book? :-)

This isn't directly related to the "Schooling" part of home, but it keeps things simpler all around. I find I can easily spend half my day preparing and cleaning up from meals, so one thing I do is always have a ready-to-eat breakfast that everyone in the family can eat. This is usually homemade muesli which I make a huge batch of every few weeks. It's inexpensive and very nourishing. Another good one is crock-pot oatmeal started the night before. My husband can eat it before he leaves for work and the rest of us awake to a hot breakfast all ready. Another thing I do is try to make a few meals each week that are big enough to freeze one or two more meals from. That way each week I can pull at least one or two dinners from the freezer. My husband also takes leftovers in his lunch each day which eliminates having to get out sandwich makings and make something separate for him. My son loves to help me in the kitchen with measuring, stirring, pouring, cracking eggs, etc. (He's only three, so we're not officially homeschooling yet.)
