Blog Tip of the Month ~Share Your Codes

Posted 4:23 PM, Sep. 25, 2009
What's your favorite code--the one you use the most? More than likely you've been asked, "How do you do that?" Bloggers are friendly people, and they enjoy helping other bloggers make their blogging experience a better one.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month share your codes! Here's what we're going to do. Leave me a comment here on the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Chalenge with a link to your short post explaining how to use your favorite code. Don't worry if anyone else may be writing about the same code--you don't all have the same readers and you don't all explain things in the same way. All codes will be tested and those that do not work or cause problems for the tester will be deleted from the comments section. So make sure your code works!

Then in next month's Blog Tip Challenge, I will remind you about this challenge and ask you to go vote for your favorite code. The winner will receive a
handmade, lavender, wheat berry, heating pad from Homestead Originals! That will feel so nice when the weather turns cold! It'll smell good, too! Read the TOS product review.

Blog Tip of the Month ~ Keep on Blogging

Posted 3:02 PM, Aug. 27, 2009
Short on time for blogging? As Bluejane said, your readers may be short on time for reading! Yet, you don't want to lose your readership all together. You can either post pictures, write a quick post with just a funny anecdote, or share a link to a website you found and really enjoyed.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month practice writing short posts. Even if you have the time for a longer post, see if you can compact what it is that you want to convey to your readers. Then see if it has any impact on your readers. Do you have fewer comments, more, or about the same? Any comment is better than no comment! (Unless of course it's spam or a troll.) Leave me a comment here on  the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge with a link to your short post. I just may have time to read it!

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month ~ Those Pesky Blog Moving Problems

Posted 4:51 PM, Jun. 26, 2009
Our fabulous tech support is working to automate the migration of *almost*
everything, but the most likely thing to be lost will be template customizations
that have broken or invalid template tags. If you have made any of your own changes to your blog template, we will be moving it over exactly as you have it, but if you do have broken or invalid template tags, then we can't guarantee they will work on the new HSB platform.

Some scripts will also be removed, though there will be ways to add certain types of scripts back in once you're at the new blog site.

Tech Support does have a good idea of the most popular scripts, but it's the lesser
popular ones that they need to know about to make sure your whole blog will move over and work properly once it is moved.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

Here's what we need from you, the scripts you use on your sites so we can provide you the ability to enable those scripts after the migration. Scripts such as: Google Analytics, Sitemeter, "no right click" and so on. Let us know what those scripts are by leaving a comment right here on the HSB Company Blog Tip Challenge. Sorry, no contest this month, but we do appreciate your help in making this move easier for everyone!

Blog Tip of the Month ~ Hits to Cater to!

Posted 1:18 AM, May. 28, 2009
This month's HSB Blogging Basic's e-Newsletter is all about site-meters. If you didn't receive the newsletter but would like to, please email me and I will send you a copy. (Please wait until Friday before emailing me, this post has to go up on the Porch in order to link to it in the newsletter and so the newsletter hasn't gone out just yet!)

From the June Blogging Basics:

Now, one last thing that makes having a site-meter so much fun is being able to see why a person came to your blog to begin with. For a few months there I had people from all over the world visiting my personal blog to learn all about Pooh Sticks. Which is nice and gives you a 100 acre wood, cozy kind of feeling. So why's that important? If you know why people are stopping by your blog you can cater to your readers--give them more of what they are coming for. That will also help push your blog to the top of search engines for that particular topic. Don't get too prideful about it though, your rankings can quickly fall, but it's still fun to see where you stand on the World Wide Web.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

If you have a site-meter find out why people are stopping by your blog and cater to their good-clean interests. Once you post your entry on your blog leave us a comment with a link to your post, here on the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge. The most amusing topic will win And Then Mama Said . . . It Takes Time to Learn to Read in honor of the Summer Reading Program kick-off!

Blog Tip Challenge ~ Have Any Blog Cleaning Tips?

Posted 2:21 PM, Mar. 26, 2009

We can't think of everything. We try, but sometimes we just don't have all the tips and answers you are looking for. What blog spring cleaning tips, ideas, and plans do you have?

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month, share with us your blog spring cleaning tips. You may not acually implement your tips in the Spring, but anything that helps us to keep our blogs looking good is what all of us are looking for! Leave us a comment with your tips here on the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge. The best tip will win a one year subscription to The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine!

Oh yes, last month I held a contest asking you to tell me what the answer was to this ridiculous question, "What is the favorite breakfast cereal of Yukon Realtors?" The winner is, stampedwithgrace, whose answer of porridge came the closest to my extremely silly answer, mush. I told you, I made it up and I wanted to use it where I couldn't hear the groaning. Be thankful I don't come up with these every month.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month ~ So, is it Spam?

Posted 2:53 PM, Feb. 24, 2009

After reading the articles in this newsletter, (to be linked to later) you are now armed with the tools to help you decide if a comment is spam or not. Here's your chance to practice your new found skill. Maybe it will even get you a low paying job, because in this economy, any skill could be a benefit. At least it would be better than driving prospective property buyers around in a dog-sled through the Yukon.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month, take a look at this comment and decide if you would consider it to be spam or not. Leave us a comment with your thoughts on why it is or isn't on the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge.
Along with your comment tell me what you think the favorite breakfast cereal of Yukon realtors is. The first person with the correct answer will receive a free one year U.S. subscription to The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine! Very cool prize for a very lame answer, but I made it up and I want to use it.

Hey! If the comment is spam, isn't this just helping to advertise the product? For the sake of this excercise I'm willing to take that chance.

Blog Tip of the Month ~ Share Your Blog Organizational Hints and Tips!

Posted 7:09 PM, Jan. 24, 2009

Blog organization is one of those things that you don't realize you were in need of until you stumble across someone's blog and see how cleverly they have designed their blog to make it easier to navigate. Don't be afraid to ask how they did that! Bloggers are usually friendly and like to help out. They will probably be thrilled; someone noticed their blog!

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month, let's not wait to stumble on some great blog organizational tools. If you have a widget, script, or other handy blog goody that can help us get our blogs all spiffed up, then share it with us! Even if it's just an idea on how to make your blog entries clean and tidy, we want to know.

Write your hints and tips on your blog and then come back here to leave a short comment telling us what your hint or tip is and then a link to your post so that we can go find out more.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month ~ Host a Contest!

Posted 12:52 AM, Dec. 22, 2008

When's the best time to host a contest? Whenever you want really! Think about the prize, is it suitable for a holiday that is coming up? If so, and your gift is a physical one, then hold your contest a couple of weeks in advance to allow for mail time. You don't have to wait for a holiday, however. People are always looking for something fun to do.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

So, have you decided to host a contest yet? Then, tell us about it! The bloggers want to enter your contest and you want bloggers to enter, so spread the news right here on the HSB Company Porch. To make this even more fun, the Porch is also hosting a contest for the most creative contest! If your contest is the most creative, then you will win a one-year subscription to The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine (or one-year renewal)!

Once you have your contest posted, share it with us so we can enter! Just come back here to the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge and sign up with Mister Linky. Don't forget to leave a comment as well, so I'll know you've entered the contest.

The contest rules are as follows:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to enter.
  • You must live within the U.S.
  • You must sign up for the contest using the Mister Linky below. Make sure it is a direct URL to your contest so that the people who want to enter don't have to search for the contest.
  • Don't forget to leave a comment! This is just so I can get a notification email that you have entered.
  • Your contest must be family friendly. Any contest found to not be appropriate will be deleted with no notification.
  • I must have access to your email address either in your comment or from your blog. Contest winner will ONLY be notified by email.
  • If after one week the winner does not reply to the notification email a new winner will be chosen.
  • This contest ends Jan. 3, 2009. Your contest can end whenever you like.

I can't wait to see what kind of contest you come up with!

November Blog Tip Challenge!

Posted 2:44 PM, Nov. 21, 2008

Blog Tip of the Month ~ Creative Mailing Lists

This month's Blogging Basics from HSB E-Newsletter is about mailing lists. (Once it's sent out, I'll link you to the archive.) If you choose to self mail blog updates to your subscribers, it doesn't have to be boring! You can get creative, just like people do with their answering machine messages.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

For those of you who are choosing the self mailing option, write up a post asking for subscribers and share what your mailing list message will be. I wish I had an example to share with you, but I was never very good at those answering maching messages anyway. That's why I'm asking you to share yours! I just want to see what you can come up with.

Once you have your entry posted, share it with us so we can see your mailing list message! Just leave a comment here with a link to your blog post.

Blog Tip Challenge ~ Make It Worth Reading

Posted 10:58 PM, Oct. 22, 2008

Once a week I tell my children to write about one word or topic. I've been pretty amazed at what they come up with! With three writers you get three totally different, fascinating accounts about the pickle. I don't allow them to write, "I ate a sweet pickle in my sandwich. It was good but I didn't like the tail." They have to write a story, do some research, or share an event. They have to make it worth their time to write and worth my time to read.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

Just like I described in, "Nothing to Say? Think Again," I want you to take one of the hum-drum topics below (or one of your own) and turn it into something worth reading.
  • Carpet
  • The weather
  • Your kitchen sink
Once you have your entry posted, share it with us so we can see how you blog with purpose! Leave a comment with a link to your blog post.

Blog Tip Challenge ~ Use Your Blog for School

Posted 4:01 PM, Sep. 29, 2008

In the September Blogging Basics I offer a few ways your student can use a blog for school. (As soon as it comes out and is archived I'll link you directly to it, in case you need it.) You can see a sample of what I am coining Blogbooking HERE. It's a cross between lapbooking and notebooking, only on a blog.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

Have a blog ready? Why not show us how you and your student display their schoolwork? It's always fun to glean ideas from other bloggers and helps us visual learners to see how it was done!

Once you have your entry posted share it with us so we can see your work! Just leave a comment here with a link to your blog post.

Blog Tip of the Month ~ It's a New School Year Open House!

Posted 8:46 PM, Aug. 27, 2008
As my family schools year round, I tend to forget this time of year that others are beginning in earnest. Over the last week I have read several blogs that shared their first day of school for the year. I thought, "Why not share that with everyone?" So that's this month's Blog Tip Challenge, an Open House.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

If you haven't already, blog about your first day of school. If you school year round that's okay. Just blog about why you made that choice for your family and what you are doing now. Post pictures, describe what curriculum you are using, what extra classes your children are taking outside the home, and don't forget to share any scheduling programs you may be using!

Once you have your entry posted share it with us here so we can see your classroom! Just leave a comment with a link to your blog post.

Blog Tip of the Month ~ Write Clearly!

Posted 5:20 PM, Jul. 30, 2008

It's important to write clearly if you want to get your point across. It's important even if you have no point! Sometimes though I can get caught up in trying to make myself so clear so that nobody will ask me just what I meant by that statement. I don't like being misunderstood. However, writing that clearly can lead to long and boring blog posts. Not to mention fewer comments. Still, you want to be clear, you want your readers to know what it is you are talking about.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month's blog tip challenge exercise is an oldy but goody for practicing clear writing. Write a blog post describing an egg beater or how to decorate a cake. No pictures allowed! Remember, you are writing this as if nobody else knows what you are talking about. They have never seen an egg beater or an iced cake before.

Once you have your entry posted share it with us so we can see how clearly you write! Leave a comment below with a link to your blog post.

Readers! Please stop by and see who has entered the challenge. Click over to their posts and leave a comment asking any questions on what you felt wasn't very clear and applaud their efforts.

June Blog Tip Challenge ~ Try Source!

Posted 11:26 AM, Jun. 18, 2008

Have you ever noticed the word Source in your Add Entry tool bar? Perhaps you clicked it and couldn't figure out what it did. Source is where you can type up your post using HTML. Some people prefer this, but it's also a good view to be in when you are adding HTML to your blog post, such as JavaScript for a counter. If you can't get your HTML codes to work in the usual view then try doing it in Source.

Blog Tip Challenge of the Month

This month I want you to write a post using Source. Practice your HTML skills and see what you can come up with. You can write or design whatever you want.

Once you have your entry posted share it with us! Come back to the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge and leave a comment telling us what you learned, how easy or hard it was, and if you would ever do it again.
