November Blog Tip Challenge!
Posted 2:44 PM, Nov. 21, 2008
Blog Tip of the Month ~ Creative Mailing Lists
This month's Blogging Basics from HSB E-Newsletter is about mailing lists. (Once it's sent out, I'll link you to the archive.) If you choose to self mail blog updates to your subscribers, it doesn't have to be boring! You can get creative, just like people do with their answering machine messages. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month For those of you who are choosing the self mailing option, write up a post asking for subscribers and share what your mailing list message will be. I wish I had an example to share with you, but I was never very good at those answering maching messages anyway. That's why I'm asking you to share yours! I just want to see what you can come up with.
Once you have your entry posted, share it with us so we can see your mailing list message! Just leave a comment here with a link to your blog post.
Blog Tip Challenge ~ Make It Worth Reading
Posted 10:58 PM, Oct. 22, 2008
Once a week I tell my children to write about one word or topic. I've been pretty amazed at what they come up with! With three writers you get three totally different, fascinating accounts about the pickle. I don't allow them to write, "I ate a sweet pickle in my sandwich. It was good but I didn't like the tail." They have to write a story, do some research, or share an event. They have to make it worth their time to write and worth my time to read. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month Just like I described in, "Nothing to Say? Think Again," I want you to take one of the hum-drum topics below (or one of your own) and turn it into something worth reading.
Once you have your entry posted, share it with us so we can see how you blog with purpose! Leave a comment with a link to your blog post.
Blog Tip Challenge ~ Use Your Blog for School
Posted 4:01 PM, Sep. 29, 2008
In the September Blogging Basics I offer a few ways your student can use a blog for school. (As soon as it comes out and is archived I'll link you directly to it, in case you need it.) You can see a sample of what I am coining Blogbooking HERE. It's a cross between lapbooking and notebooking, only on a blog. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month Have a blog ready? Why not show us how you and your student display their schoolwork? It's always fun to glean ideas from other bloggers and helps us visual learners to see how it was done! Blog Tip of the Month ~ It's a New School Year Open House!
Posted 8:46 PM, Aug. 27, 2008
As my family schools year round, I tend to forget this time of year that others are beginning in earnest. Over the last week I have read several blogs that shared their first day of school for the year. I thought, "Why not share that with everyone?" So that's this month's Blog Tip Challenge, an Open House.
Blog Tip Challenge of the Month If you haven't already, blog about your first day of school. If you school year round that's okay. Just blog about why you made that choice for your family and what you are doing now. Post pictures, describe what curriculum you are using, what extra classes your children are taking outside the home, and don't forget to share any scheduling programs you may be using!
Once you have your entry posted share it with us here so we can see your classroom! Just leave a comment with a link to your blog post. Blog Tip of the Month ~ Write Clearly!
Posted 5:20 PM, Jul. 30, 2008
It's important to write clearly if you want to get your point across. It's important even if you have no point! Sometimes though I can get caught up in trying to make myself so clear so that nobody will ask me just what I meant by that statement. I don't like being misunderstood. However, writing that clearly can lead to long and boring blog posts. Not to mention fewer comments. Still, you want to be clear, you want your readers to know what it is you are talking about. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month This month's blog tip challenge exercise is an oldy but goody for practicing clear writing. Write a blog post describing an egg beater or how to decorate a cake. No pictures allowed! Remember, you are writing this as if nobody else knows what you are talking about. They have never seen an egg beater or an iced cake before.
Once you have your entry posted share it with us so we can see how clearly you write! Leave a comment below with a link to your blog post. Readers! Please stop by and see who has entered the challenge. Click over to their posts and leave a comment asking any questions on what you felt wasn't very clear and applaud their efforts. June Blog Tip Challenge ~ Try Source!
Posted 11:26 AM, Jun. 18, 2008
Have you ever noticed the word Source in your Add Entry tool bar? Perhaps you clicked it and couldn't figure out what it did. Source is where you can type up your post using HTML. Some people prefer this, but it's also a good view to be in when you are adding HTML to your blog post, such as JavaScript for a counter. If you can't get your HTML codes to work in the usual view then try doing it in Source. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month This month I want you to write a post using Source. Practice your HTML skills and see what you can come up with. You can write or design whatever you want.
Once you have your entry posted share it with us! Come back to the HSB Company Porch Blog Tip Challenge and leave a comment telling us what you learned, how easy or hard it was, and if you would ever do it again. Tia Linschied Senior Editor of HSB Blog Tip Challenge of the Month ~ Something Fun!
Posted 4:26 PM, Apr. 25, 2008
This month I want you to write a post that will link to as many other blogs as you can. You can call it a compendium, medley, review or collection. I don't care, just as long as it's not a list. The whole post has to make sense. Something like this.
Once you have your entry posted share it with us! Sign up with Mr. Linky below. Blog Tip Challenge ~ Start Something
Posted 2:44 AM, Mar. 28, 2008
One way a blogger gets others to come to their blog is to start a weekly or monthly blog post meme (pronounced like theme). The blogger challenges their readers to post on a certain subject on their own blogs and then asks those bloggers to sign up by either leaving a comment or using the Mr. Linky at the bottom of the original post. This way other readers and bloggers can read all the posts that mention the same topic. For instance, Thursday Thirteen, Wordless Wednesday, and Works for me Wednesday. The list could go on and on and on! If you see a meme on a blog you'll know it because it will direct you back to the original post. So start your own meme! Blog Tip Challenge of the Month Even if you don't want to start a meme you can certainly take part in them! Remember many of the other participants will be reading your entry. Right here's a great place to start - The HSB Company Porch Homeschool Times. Write a blog post in newspaper fashion about any homeschool event or activity you have taken part in. It can be truth or fiction, the point is to have fun! Tell us how the dog ate your schoolwork or about the field trip to the pizza parlor. Don't forget to write it just like it's an article in a newspaper. Give it a catchy title like 15 Homeschoolers Caught with the Dough at Pizza Ritza!
Once your entry is posted come back to the Porch and sign up with Mr. Linky, that way everyone can read your post and you can read all the other entries!
Blog Tip Challenge ~ Check Your Posts
Posted 4:03 PM, Feb. 22, 2008
While blogging is a fun way to share with your family and friends not everyone on the internet needs to know everything about your life. It's a good idea to go over your blog posts and check to see what you have already blogged about. You or a friend or family member can go over them and see if there is anything on your blog you don't want people to know about. Sometimes we inadvertently put something simple, like that picture of your house that shows the street sign. Blog Tip Challenge of the Month
Posted 12:54 PM, Dec. 23, 2007
This month write a post about a gift that was given to you. Why was it meaningful? Did you know the person that gave it to you? (Some gifts come from strangers.) What did you do with that gift? Have you given the gift to someone else? OR write a special post that is a gift you are giving to your readers. Leave us a comment here on the HSB Company Porch about which challenge you have chosen to write about and leave the permalink to the specific entry on your blog! November Blog Tip Challenge
Posted 4:53 PM, Nov. 14, 2007
This month click on the Random Blogger button on the HSB Home page or at the top of each blog. Try to leave a comment on every blog you come across even the blogs that appear to be abandoned. How many comments can you leave? 10? 20? 50? Who can leave the most comments? Come back here and let us know! October Blog Tip Challenge of the Month
