Communication Corner ~ Anemic Relationships?
Posted 8:21 AM, Oct. 29, 2009
We all know that when the body is sick, it's trying to tell us something is wrong. It's a series of signs God gives us so that we pay attention to what our bodies need in order that we have a chance to get well. Being tired is a sign that we should rest. It's what our body needs to regain health. If we ignore these signs, we take the chance that our illness will worsen.
I feel our relationships are the same way. There are signs God gives us that our relationships are ill and need attention. Clues God gives us so we pay attention to what our relationships need in order that they have a chance to heal or strengthen. If we ignore these signs, we take the chance that our relationships will worsen. These signs are all transmitted via communication. Your son feels neglected so he begins to act up. Your husband feels you don't do the little things for him you used to do now that you are homeschooling so he begins to neglect the little things he used to do for you. Your best friend no longer calls because she feels you don't take the time for her. These are all signs of a relationship illness. In our microwave society, so many relationships are suffering from anemia. They aren't nurtured because we are all too busy to pay attention to the communication (or lack thereof) which are signs that our relationships are in trouble. As we begin to get settled into our new school year, take the opportunities to notice the communication being sent by our loved ones and make sure we are communicating how special they are in our lives. Send a note of thanks, an email of encouragement, call to say hello. Let's nurture our relationships before they suffer from illness. Let's nurture those that have become anemic. Let's strengthen those that could grow. A friendly reminder from the staff at Art of Eloquence! Check out all the ways Art of Eloquence can help you communicate more effectively with your family, friends, boss, employees, or customers today! Communication Corner ~ Purple Recipes

Ok I'm taking a bit of liberty with this topic. I've got a two part series on my podcast and today is part two. Being grumpy isn't a spectator sport. It's something that rubs off on all around us. "Grumpyness" communicates grumpyness to others and it is transferred well. Last week I talked about "Grumpy Men and the Women Who Love Them" and this week it's...

Posted 9:30 AM, Sep. 17, 2009
How to Say What You Mean in 140 Characters or Less! Are you a Twitterer or on Facebook? If you Twitter, you know how difficult it can be to Say What You Mean when you only have 140 characters in which to do it. For those not taking advantage of this exciting new social networking site, you may need to read that again! I didn't say 140 words. I said 140 CHARACTERS! Now you're gettin' it!One hundred and forty characters may sound like a lot, but this is 140 characters: Running today. I have a 10am phone meeting then I gotta get school done so we can have a picnic in the park with our new home school group. After being a Twitterer for a few months now, I have become adept at getting my point across in 140 characters or less. One Twitterer commented on how effective I am at using all 140 characters as there are many times when my post is exactly 140 characters long! A few Twitterers, knowing that I teach communication skills, have asked me to write on the topic. So here are some... Tips for Saying What You Mean in 140 Characters or Less! There are several techniques I employ in effectively using my 140 characters on Twitter. Here are a few and the pros and cons of each one. 1. To Be Continued... One of the techniques I see used on Twitter is the To Be Continued Method. If you just have too much to say, you can employ this technique but I would suggest you do it only if you are a fast typist! It is difficult to keep a reader's train of thought going if your post series is interrupted by other posts that have nothing to do with yours. This can be especially frustrating if too many posts are able to slip in between your part three and part four and again before part five or was that six? The best way to use this technique is to type quickly so they are found one right after another and have a maximum of two posts. If you are taking too long to post part two, you can reference some of part one in your part two so readers can more easily put your Twitter Post Puzzle together. 2. I Don't Need No Stinkin' Spaces! Nobody is grading this so some of the rules you learned in the dark ages for writing formal letters will have to be thrown out the window! If you only have enough characters left for one space between sentences, just put one. If you don't have room for ANY, well... You get the idea. Just make sure that if you don't use spaces, you DO use punctuation! Otherwise nobody will know where one sentence ends and the other begins. I'd love to see that movie when it comes out I have my test on Friday 3. The Eboniks Post That brings us to another rule breaker. The Texting Technique. If U R going 2 use shortcuts in order 2 cut dwn on the # of characters U use...U bttr make shur ppl will undrstd it... B4 U ht snd, btr ck ovr 2 m sur U cnB undrsd R ppl w/B rly frtrtd tyg 2 fgr ot ? U js sd 4. Say No to Prepositions and Articles In order to save precious characters, it's best to leave out certain prepositions, pronouns and articles that are not necessary to the understanding of the post. Just make sure you don't leave out so many words that your message is incomprehensible. Not going to meeting today. Sick! 5. Link It! If you have something to say that just cannot be done in 140 characters, you might want to post a link to a blog post that can get the job done more eloquently in, say 157 characters? LOL Take this article for example. If I would like to share these tips with my Twitter and other social networking friends, I can do so by posting a link to this blog post with just the subject line. In fact, if you have a very long URL for your post, you can go to TinyURL.com and create a short link for the very same blog post. Hey, want your URL to stand out too? You can ask TinyURL.com to make a custom URL like: tinyurl.com/TwitterTips 6. Just the Facts Ma'am Post Anyone old enough to remember Dragnet? I loved Sargent Friday's line, "Just the facts, Ma'am." Remember that you don't necessarily need more words to Say What You Mean. You just need those words to be succinct, effective and clear! 7. When all else fails, EMAIL! Even the direct messages on Twitter are limited to 140 characters. As a result, it is sometimes MUCH more effective to send your email to the other party so that you can carry on the discussion or work out details in a much less restrictive environment. Twitter is a great place to fellowship, network, and share. It just takes a wee bit of adjusting to make the most of your 140 character posts! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ JoJo Tabares holds a degree in Speech Communication, but it is her humorous approach to communication skills which has made her a highly sought-after Christian speaker and writer. Communication Corner ~ Back to School Fun on this Week's Podcast!
Posted 5:31 PM, Sep. 3, 2009
Back to school was never so much fun!
For those of you not currently following my blog, Communication FUNdamentals, you may not know that my dear friend and co host at Grace Talk Soup recently had some serious family issues that required her to leave the internet for a while so that she can concentrate more on her family. SInce the show was based upon Lucy Linguist and Ethel the Editor, Lucy was really nothing without her Ethel. After some soul searching (and by that I mean consulting the Lord!), I realized that this was an opportunity to redesign the show to bring even more creative fun to teaching communication skills. The result? CCN: The Communication Comedy Network! CCN airs each Thursday at 8am PST/11am EST for one hour and features a variety of "shows" each week hosted by various personalities all played by myself! Real communication issues, really funny! Each week features two or three CCN shows like: The 12 1/2 Minute News Hour features News Anchor Nancy Newsome who shares weird but true stories that illustrate the need for better communication skills. and...Word of the Week with Professor Wordsmith! Talk Talk Show, a talk show about talking (communicating) w/ host JoJo Tabares of Art of Eloquence who hosts an open discussion about various communication topics similar to the old Grace Talk Soup format. Parodies of infomercials, game shows, soap operas etc will be occassionally featured as well. This Thursday, the Talk Talk Show, will be pre empted by a pilot of a new CCN Game Show called Wheel of Communication. Bring your kids and have another browser open to find the words based on the clues the host will give you. The one with the most correct answers wins some free gifts on the air! Have fun, win prizes and learn about communication all at the same fun time! Back to school was never so much fun! All show audios are archived immediately following the live show so you can listen on demand at your convenience. Check out the Communication Comedy Network and see what fun you and your family are missing! Communication Corner ~ Organize Your Communication
Posted 1:52 PM, Aug. 27, 2009
Organize Your Communication By JoJo TabaresWe all know that organizing your day will increase your productivity. It allows you to keep a record of things that you need to do and prioritize them to make better use of your time. It keeps you on track and helps you to organize your day. A planner is an essential tool for the busy woman whether she has a business, a career or an active household! But, how many times have you had to return a phone call and forgot to mention an important point? Have you ever had a hard time formulating your thoughts in a letter? Did you ever email anyone and come to find out that they didn’t quite understand what you were asking? And then, how much of your time was spent trying to clear up that communication? We all know that effective communication is important, but what does that really mean in practical terms for busy women? Here are some tips that I use to help me make the most out of my communication. 1. Phone Calls Before you dial that number, make some notes on a piece of paper to remind you of the points you wish to address. Don’t write complete sentences, but rather write a bulletized list so that it is easy to refer to while you are talking. Write the person’s name at the top and, if this call is for business, some notes about that person that you remember. Have you ever called someone and, while it was ringing, forgot who you were calling? This technique helps with those “senior moments”. Good communicators are great listeners and your notes can help you communicate that you were listening to them when they mentioned that their Aunt Sally was in the hospital last week. How? Because you will remember to ask how Aunt Sally is doing! 2. Use an Outline Before you write anything (a letter, an email, a report or an article), you must organize your thoughts. The best way to do this is to use an outline. This ensures that your thoughts are complete, presented in a logical order and are easy to understand before you begin to write. You will notice that the writing goes much more smoothly when you do this too! An added bonus for those of you who don’t like writing as much as I do! I can always tell when someone didn’t organize their thoughts before hitting the keyboard or picking up that pencil because their communication is a jumble of disjointed ideas that hit you from all angles and leave you wondering. A confused mind will not act. If you have confused your Uncle Edward, he might not understand that you want him to watch the kids next Tuesday night. If you have confused your boss, she may not give you that project or that corner office you were trying to ask for. And if you confuse your customer, he will not buy from you! 3. Email Now that you have organized your thoughts, make your email posts easier to read by organizing their appearance! Remember that we live in a microwave society. People don’t want to read a 6000 word essay on what you have done today…especially if it is all one big paragraph!
* Keep in mind to whom your email is going. If it is to an entire group of people, make sure that this is something you wish to release to the general population. As you type, keep in mind that the group may be diverse in their religious or political beliefs so tailor your message appropriately so you can say what you mean!4. Presentations It is generally acceptable to carry notes or index cards up with you when you are making a presentation of almost any sort. What is not acceptable is to read it verbatim while holding the cards up in front of you obscuring your face. Organize yourself for your presentation.
* Know your audience. Consider what they value most and what they would like to know about you topic before you begin. Tailor your presentation to the average audience member, but leave room for the feelings and values of the others to whom you will be speaking.A little organization and preparation goes a long way toward making your communication more clear! It will be less stressful for you, less frustrating for your audience and give you the best chance over-all to say what you mean. Happy communicating!

Posted 8:28 AM, Aug. 20, 2009
The things I like to read about homeschooling are from homeschool moms in the trenches. I read their blogs here on HSB and on others. I love to read their posts on Facebook and to their homeschool groups. In fact, there are several homeschool groups on Facebook you can join. One of the best ones (most helpful and most active) is The Old Schoolhouse's Homeschooling with Heart.
It's great to fellowship with like minded moms going through the same things I am at the same time. You get current info, tips, and ideas when you need them! One of the things I hear a great deal on these groups is how many homeschool moms are worried about getting their teens through the high school years especially if they are looking toward college. They aren't sure how to plan, what they need, what options homeschoolers have or even what special things are required of homeschoolers who are applying to college. Some are so worried they are thinking about putting their children back in public school! My daughter is currently an incomming sophomore at Vanderbilt University. Prior to her acceptance I, too, was worried! We did extensive research beginning in her early high school years and found many helpful tips and information. Unfortunately most of the information was all over the net, in various books and obtained through obscure blog replies. After finding all the information that was instrumental in her acceptance, my daughter decided that it was a shame to put aside all this research and not allow others to benefit from her experiences. So she wrote an eBook that is packed full of information to help homeschoolers successfully navigate all the rules and information and tips she took two years to accumulate. The result was The Homeschooler's Guide to Preparing for College! If you are a homeschool mom facing the challege of homeschooling through high school wondering if you can do it, I'm here to tell you you can! This book was written exclusively for homeschoolers because preparing for college as a homeschooler is VERY different than if you attend public school. This book was written by a homeschooler who was successful in getting into one of the most elite schools in the nation at a time when there was the most competition in HISTORY. Take advantage of our research to find out what all the SAT tests are about, what options/tests/classes are available for homeschoolers, which tests require what, which SAT prep books are worth the money (we wasted HUNDREDS of dollars that you don't have to!) and what you need to know about the application process for homeschoolers. It also gives you embedded links to resoruces. Don't wait til your students sophomore or junior year like we did! If you start early, the entire process is easier! We wish we did! You CAN homeschool through high school! Fellowship with other homeschool moms is critical and so is information. My favorite homeschool books are written by homeschoolers! How about you? ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ JoJo Tabares holds a degree in Speech Communication, but it is her humorous approach to communication skills which has made her a highly sought-after Christian speaker and writer. Posted 9:39 AM, Aug. 13, 2009
When I'm irritated, I often resort to lifting my spirits by writing with humor. It also helps my creativity. Living in the desert of "Aridzona" for the last year, I have found that it is necessary to keep my sense of humor about me as temperatures climb well into the 100's! A few weeks ago when it was about 116 during the days with a low of 95, I decided to give my fellow Facebook friends a laugh by reporting the weekend weather forcast as:
Partly crispy with a chance of heat stroke! It's not so difficult to turn heat into fun if you just add a little creativity and some communication skill! As they used to say in my day, "Try it; You'll like it!" If you'd like to try some fun learning communication skills, drop by Art of Eloquence.com today! Communication Corner ~ Family Reunions
Posted 11:06 AM, Aug. 6, 2009
I wasn't aware, but I guess from our topic this week, family reunions are big this time of year. I just spent an amazing weekend with my sister and her family, myself. Our families hadn't seen each other in a year since they helped us move to Arizona from California. I learned three vitally important lessons from being so far away from most of my family this past year.
First, relationships cannot flourish without communication. You cannot develop, strengthen or grow a relationship without communicating with each other. You cannot let too much time go by without picking up the phone, typing out an email or writing a letter before you feel disconnected from your loved ones. Second, relationships are built much easier, faster and deeper when that communication takes place in person. I never realized how much I missed this year by not seeing my nephew grow or having time to listen to my niece's sense of humor and intelligent banter. Third, relationships thrive more when the quality of communication is high even if the quantity is low. Even when we lived in California only a little over an hour away, we had precious little time to spend. Most of our get-togethers were for birthdays or some established EVENT where most of the time was spent serving and eating and cleaning up. In between there was some amount of discussion but it was often about logistics and major events. Very little time was spent making memories. This past weekend, we found time to be silly together. We found time to play and we found time to make memories. The communication was meaningful but also more relaxed and fun because this get-together was just for fun with no agenda but to connect. Take time to connect with your family at those reunions. The temptation is to talk about the major things in your life so you will be caught up with each other. I submit that those major things can be discussed in an email or a short phone conversation. I ask you to take the time at your family reunions to really connect with your family. Share the little things, the funny things, the silly things. That's what makes a memory and that's what you will both remember for a lifetime! Check out Art of Eloquence.com for eStudies that will help your family communicate more effectively! Communication Corner ~ Friendship is Communication

You can't have a friendship unless you communicate with each other. Good friendships require good communication skills.
A friendly reminder from Art of Eloquence.com, the Communication FUNdamentals! Communication Corner ~ Words that Bug You
Posted 9:17 AM, Jul. 26, 2009
Insects are little pests in our homes. They don't really belong there and they just annoy us as we have to deal with them either one at a time or, heaven forbid, in swarms!
Unnecessary words are the same way in our communication. Ever talk to someone who takes the long way around a conversation? Someone who walks around the block a bit before he finally spits out what he wants to say? Ever in a hurry and need an answer to a question quickly but the person you happened to ask has swallowed a dictionary? Does it BUG you? LOL Sometimes we need a "Just the facts ma'am" moment, but we live in a "let me tell you all about it" world. FDR once said "Be sincere; be brief; be seated." Sometimes a good idea for more than making speeches. ;D A friendly reminder from Art of Eloquence.com, the Communication FUNdamentals!
