Holiday Hunt Week1 - Enter to Win a 12 Days of Christmas Devotional!

Posted 11:30 AM, Nov. 10, 2009

Attention, Super Sleuth Homeschool Moms!

Join our Holiday Hunt!

We're holding several holiday scavenger hunts here on HSB. Once a week for the next three weeks, you'll have a chance to join in the fun each week! (One entry per family per week, please.)

All of the entry details and clues for the first week are below, so please read them carefully.

The Prize!

The prize is this wonderful Christmas devotional--The 12 Days of Christmas: A Guide to an Old Tradition with a New Purpose by Linda Coates and Leslie S. Kelly

The 12 Days of Christmas helps families discover that Christmas Day is the kickoff for the celebration, not the final affair. The twelve-day adventure begins on December 26. In it, you will learn more about the tenets of the Christian faith through wonderful stories and meaningful activities, and create new traditions to last you and your family a lifetime. By uncovering hidden meanings in the old classic Christmas song, Linda and Leslie bring you a new and exciting way to finish one year and begin the next.

How to Join in the Holiday Hunt

Put on your detective hat and find the answers to the following clues. You can find every answer by going through the links on our free TOS 2009 Digital Holiday Supplement found here: http://thehomeschoolmagazine.com/Digital-Supplement/Thanksgiving&Christmas.html

Here's what to do:

  • Read the clues carefully and find the answers by clicking on the advertisements in the TOS 2009 Holiday Digital Supplement, found here.
  • Once you have an answer for all six questions, email them to Tan Hogate at thogate@thehomeschoolmagazine.com.
  • You have until midnight EST Friday, November 13, 2009,  to send Tan your answers.
  • At that point, we will conduct a random drawing to determine a winner from this week’s submissions to receive The 12 Days of Christmas by Linda Coates and Leslie Kelly - a Christmas devotional.

Again . . .Each week one winner of our random drawing will win a copy of the beautiful Christmas devotional from Linda Coates and Leslie Kelly, entitled The 12 Days of Christmas: A Guide to an Old Tradition with a New Purpose.

Each day of this devotional has scripture, discussion questions, activities, a prayer, a devotional story, and points to ponder. Your family will delve into the true meaning of Christmas, starting with Day 1-December 26. This is truly a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate the birth of Christ.

"Whose birthday is it anyway? Have you ever wanted more from the Christmas Season? The Twelve Days of Christmas is more than just another Christmas book. It is a way to recapture what has been lost in the hustle and bustle of Christmas so that this year it can be different. This inspiring book will help you discover that Christmas Day is the jumping point for the real celebration, not the final affair . . .  The Twelve Days of Christmas is a beautiful way to finish one year and begin the next and to celebrate Christ's birth by giving our gifts to the One who has given us the greatest gift of all." Horse Contest Winners and An Upcoming Contest

Posted 9:01 AM, Sep. 22, 2009
Wow! We have a lot of horse lovers here on the Front Porch! Thank you to everyone who entered our contest for the two horse books. We enjoyed reading all of the fun facts about horses.

We gathered some special friends to help us conduct the drawing.

The horses were very patient as each name was entered into the "official" drawing hat. Well, there were a few wild snorts and neighs, but all in all, the horses behaved. When all of the names were placed in the hat, the stable girl volunteered to select two slips of paper.

The first winner is. . .

Isabel
Yay!! (applause)

The assembled horses neighed loudly in delight. The second winner was selected, and the winner is. . .
Cassie
Yay!! (applause)

Thank you to everyone who entered. We enjoy having contests for our younger visitors on the Front Porch. It's so much fun to read what all of you have to share.

We have another contest for children coming next week. It is something VERY special for Fire Prevention Week.

Schoolhouse Support Contest ~ Circle Time

CLOSED!

Circle Time
By Kendra Fletcher
Preschoolers and Peace
www.preschoolersandpeace.com

"Help! I can't do this anymore! The toddler is flushing toys down the toilet again, and the baby is crying--I think she's teething; someone needs help with their math, and it's time to get ready for Dad to come home! How can I do this?" If you've ever felt this way, get ready for preschoolers and peace! What? Those two words don't go together, you say? Well, they do now!

Kendra Fletcher has written an E-Book whose subtitle is Plan the Best Part of the Day! Maybe you're like me, maybe you thought that the only "peace" was when the preschoolers took a nap and it was reading time for the older children! Now I realize that peace can come while everyone is awake, too! Circle Time is a 33-page E-Book that explains how you can have a peaceful time together learning and enjoying one another, yes, with preschoolers! In the book, Kendra explains how to plan a circle time (she suggests naming it something appropriate for your family) that includes everyone in the family. Getting all the children to participate is covered as well, so if you're thinking, "Not my 14-year-old, she'll never do it," then you must read what Kendra writes about how to get your kids on board. She even covers how to balance between unreasonably long for little ones and stopping short so little ones won't get bored.

Favorite Animal Contest Winner!

Posted 2:30 PM, Jun. 29, 2009

Hello again, boys and girls!

You did an AWESOME job on this contest! It was so fun reading what you had to say about your favorite animal.

My kids are helping me with the drawing, so we thought we could tell you something about their favorite animals as well.

CameRon wanted to go first. He has a cat, a basset hound dog, two goats and two pigs of his own. Of course, he isn't sure which is his favorite, but he chose to do a picture with the pigs.
Here are his interesting facts about pigs:

1. Pigs are really very clean animals.
2. When they are born they weigh less than 9 pounds but when full grown they can weigh over 900!
3. When raised around humans, they can become very friendly and you can even train them to go on walks with you like a dog would.
4. Pigs have a great sense of humor! (See below)

Cam drew the name of the first winner. That name is:

Jonathan who is three years old. Here is what Jonathan had to say about his favorite animal, a dog:

Jonathan (age 3):
My favorite animal is Princess (Our dog). Dogs get deaf sometimes like Princess when they get old. Dogs like to play with little boys even when they are old. Dogs are nice.

Congratulations, Jonathan! I have sent your mom an email.

Dusty, my other son, has a dog and two calves all his own. He chose to talk a little about his calves. Here are some things he thinks are fun about these little guys.

1. Cows have four digestive compartments similar to stomachs.
2. A milk cow can give 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.
3. A cow can smell things up to six miles away if the wind is blowing right.

Here are a couple of photos of Dusty and his calves.

Dusty got to draw the name for the second winner:

Christina! Here is what Chirstina had to say about her favorite animal:

Christina likes dolphins. People can play with them

Great answers, Christina! Congratulations! I have sent your mom an email.

Congratulations to everyone who participated! You all did such a great job talking about your animals.

Be sure to check out our WannaBe Series to learn more about becoming a veterinairan where you can work wtih animals, or a firefighter, chef, and many others!

Keep Learning!
