Why blogging is so great reason #5,287: You get to meet some of your favorite homeschool celebrities without having to attend a conference! Amanda Bennett has been blogging here at HSB ever since it started back in 2005. Blogging builds good business, but it also builds good relationships, and Amanda is very friendly and relational.

You may think that the author of numerous unit studies has her life perfectly organized and that all of her science experiments turn out with nary a problem. Not so! Even Amanda learns from her homeschool lessons.

This Christmas will be a meager one for many families. Yet we can still make it special. The first step is remembering what it is that makes the season so important to us, aside from Christ, it's family. Amanda shares a story about a tough Christmas she had as a little girl. Be sure to also read Christmas: A Study of Love.

As this week, and next, we are talking about Thanksgiving I thought this post, Thanksgiving Learning--Gratitude? would be of interest to you.

Next week there won't be a new Featured Blogger, so you get two whole weeks to explore Amanda's blog and wish her tidings of comfort and joy! (Such greetings aren't just for Christmas!)

Featured Blogger ~ ElCloud

Posted 1:09 PM, Nov. 13, 2009

Here is yet another blogger that I thought for sure had already been Featured Blogger of the Week before, ElCloud of ElCloud Homeschool: Busy Minds, Busy Hands, Busy Feet. As near as I can tell, I was wrong.

I'm glad I stopped by her blog today because she has two posts on the subject of no longer taking certain children to the store: Being Banned From Wal-Mart and I Should Probably Clarify. These posts encouraged me because I have recently had to ban one of my children from going into any store, not just Wal-Mart.

This week on the Porch we've been talking about home economics. ElCloud has a great post on making your own antibacterial soap.

Crafting is another home ec subject, one I haven't been able to get a passing grade on. ElCloud shares some interesting information about UHU glue and how you can get some for free, if you are willing to blog your craft projects. What homeschooler isn't? (Aside from me of course.)

Go greet ElCloud, a.k.a. April, and tell her all sorts of wonderful things about yourselves and your blogs.

Featured Blogger ~ DiamondsInTheRough

Posted 7:38 PM, Nov. 7, 2009

This week's Featured Blogger is Diamonds In The Rough!

"Mrs. Diamond" and I have been getting to know each other through our blogs. Her "Diamondettes" (I refuse to cal them lumps of coal), have been blog friends with my girls for awhile now. It's fun to meet families as a family on HSB!

Now there are TONS of blog posts I could link you to, but I had such a hard time deciding what to go with. I've opted to link to categories, that way you can see a bunch of posts at one time.

The first category up is Emily's 400 Questions, and Mrs. Diamond isn't kidding when she makes that claim! Some of the questions her daughter comes up with will surely make you chuckle and wonder where that question came from. Others are very thought provoking. All are fun to read! Now if Mrs. Diamond would put the answers she'd have her own Q & A Encyclopedia!

Ever wonder what it's like to live in the desert? Then the category Life in the Desert is what you want to click on! It's hot, it's cold, and it's always full of blessings--and lessons from the Lord.

With the holidays coming up you are more than likely looking for some new recipes. Try this little recipe "book" Recipes From My Kitchen. The recipe that is a family favorite for my family is the Dutch Baby. Yummo!

My all time favorite category though is Diamonds and Other Gems. Wow! There are some lessons to learn here! Like the worth of diamonds--and souls.

Please click on over and say hello to my friend, DiamondsInTheRough!

Blogging is such a fun way to share what your family is up to! With the holidays coming up it can be even more important to share pictures, stories, and memories with your friends and family. Even for yourself! My 4-year blogiversary is tomorrow, a lot has happened in four years!

I found a blog today that really takes advantage of recording family highlights and events. Meet rksut1 of Learning something new daily.

As I scrolled down her blog I began to realize that nearly every single one of her posts, on that first page, has photos to go with it. Not just a list of photos, but slideshows! Now this is one camera happy and proud mama! She has every reason to be. Granted she doesn't blog daily, and she hasn't put up a new post in awhile. (Maybe she's working on a new one right now?) I just though it would be fun to introduce you to this fun blog.

Why not go on a hiking adventure with rksut1 and family? Think they had a good time? Look for yourself!

As we are talking about sickness this week on the Porch, I thought this post on catching the Do More bug was appropriate. No pictures, but it does offer a cure--no shots needed!

Are you having grammar wars in your homeschool? Sometimes looking at what one mom's battle plans are can help!

I hope you'll enjoy visiting rksut1 this week, and don't forget to leave her a comment!

This week's Featured Blogger of the Week is Doehillhomeschool! She has some beautiful posts.

First up is a yummy looking recipe for cinnamon chicken! You can tell this recipe idea is from a homeschool mom--she wanted to try to create a meal she had read about in a book!

The holiday season is fast approaching! DoeHill has a post from last year that talks about getting busy but needing to remember the business of joy.

Got patience? For those who are always hearing from all those people who say they don't have enough patience to homeschool, meet another homeschool mom just like you.

Take the time to say hello to DoeHillHomeschool!

Featured Blogger ~ MasonMoments

Posted 2:18 PM, Oct. 16, 2009

So this week's Porch theme is crafts and I've found one for you at Mason Moments! Her blog is beautiful and crafty looking, and she has some very interesting posts about their lives so be sure to read her whole blog!

We don't often think about tie-dye t-shirts this time of year, and the Mason family created theirs for the 4th of July, but these would be great gifts that even your children could help with. Not only that, what a fun way to keep track of your family on special outings! The Mason's used a kit to make their shirts, but if you can make the dye, the idea of using bottles is a lot less messy. You could pick some up at the dollar store, even if you had to use ketchup and mustard bottles.

I don't like tomatoes but I've got to say this recipe for Country Style Tomatoes looks really yummy! The picture of them just made me think of fall and eating warm sandwiches.

One thing you'll quickly discover is that the Mason's are a racing family. Rather the Daddy does the racing, and the family supports him. There are tons of fun posts with pictures about racing. Start here though to find out what type of racing Mr. Mason does, and here's some pictures I thought looked fun.

Now those are your Mason Moments to get you started, but don't stop there! This family looks like they would be fun to know!

Featured Blogger ~ MrsE

Posted 5:33 PM, Oct. 9, 2009

This week's theme on the Porch is about Fall, and today I "fell" into a blog that is so encouraging and speaks the truth in love. MrsE from Living Sacrifice tells it like it is, like so many of us need to hear.

Now I haven't read all of her posts, so I can't tell you that I agree with everything she says, but I will say this, she only wants us to think deeper, think beyond ourselves, and encourage us to follow Christ, all the way. You don't have to agree with her, just stop and ask yourself, "Have I ever looked at it like this?" So if any of her  posts cause you concern, then be sure to talk about it with Mrs. E. Pray about it. Talk to your spouse about it. Not necessarily in that order.

I'm going to start by sharing this post Swashbuckling Sans Pirates. Mrs. E certainly caused me to stop and think and I'm a fairly careful/mindful parent, or so I thought.

Here is something I've been struggling with lately, my son won't sit still and do his schoolwork. Hey, not a big surprise from moms of boys! Yet, I have been trying to figure out when is it good to make him sit and when is it good to let him go? Perhaps you have to. Then this post may help you, Real Men Don't Do Workbooks

What were your thoughts about the movie Fireproof? No, this isn't a review, and Mrs. E isn't giving one either, although we both agree that we liked it, but what didn't it cover? How many of you saw it as only a beginning and not an end? Fireproof: the Sequel, now just what would that look like?

Before you go and visit Mrs. E get a warm drink. You're going to be there for awhile.

Featured Blogger ~ DustBunniesandBooks

Posted 1:59 PM, Oct. 2, 2009

This week's Featured Blogger is DustBunniesandBooks! I love that name!

If you are nearing an age where Dr. is wanting you to get a mammogram, then you may want to read this post, Themography....instead of or in addition to mammograms. I've never heard of thermography before and found it to be an interesting idea. Please note that by my linking to this blog entry or the author's writing of it does not mean that we are dispensing medical advice. We're just sharing an option that you may not have heard of and that you may be able to get covered even if your insurance won't. Every woman should be aware of her options when it comes to breast cancer detection.

Ever hear of Grammar Punk? Not me. This Grammar Punk review will give you an idea of what it is, how you do it, and whether or not it works for this blogger.

As this week we are talking about sports here on the Porch, I thought I'd better find something "sporty" from Dustbunnies blog, Barrel Racing. It's a great picture and a fun sport!

Enjoy meeting DustBunniesandBooks and don't forget to leave her a comment!

Oh boy, now here's a face and blog I haven't seen! Meet Christinethecurious at Our Curious Home. At least, I don't remember her . . . oh well, that means shes new all over again if I did visit her blog before!

Bloggers are great at expressing themselves and sometimes the way they do it is highly amusing. Christine has a picture in her post snap shots from Oakdale Farms, that cracked me up! Two roosters that look like bewildered hippies. Christine describes them differently but you'll have to click over to find out her opinion yourself.

As this week we are talking about math here on the Porch, I just have to direct your attention to this post, Hop Scotching the Number Line. What a great idea for wiggly, hands-on children!

In her post on Living Math, Christine shares a heap of math resources and explains different ways to use pattern cards. Hey! If you have other pattern card games be sure to share them with Christine and with us!

Click on over and visit Christine the Curious. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Featured Blogger ~ LarabaK

Posted 9:48 AM, Sep. 18, 2009

So this week's theme on the Porch is writing, and as you have probably figured out, bloggers write. Unless of course they are photo blog purists, or video bloggers, but the main purpose of writing is communication and that what any blog is about.

This week's Featured Blogger is LarabaK, and like most of us here at HSB she writes what she knows about--her family, homeschooling, thoughts, and fears.

Ok, it's the beginning of the school year and I've been sharing lots of posts on this topic, but Laraba's post was quite enjoyable because she reveals a secret--she's not SuperMom!

Back to the topic of writing, Laraba wrote an email to her friends a couple of years ago and she posted it on her blog. (I wish I had some of the emails I had written to some of my friends so long ago!) This story is a real experience, involving a skunk, and I found it quite hilarious! It does have a sad end, just so you know.

How Do You Have “Fun” With Your Kids? Laraba tells us how she has fun with her children but she's also looking for some good ideas. She also explains how important it is that our children know we love them and not our things and organization more.

Stop by LarabaK's blog, write her a comment, and share your fun ideas, skunk stories, and compare your Normal Mom tights and capes!

How's your homeschool year going so far? What sorts of things are you doing? This week's Featured Blogger is Homeschooling6 and her school year has just started! Let's find out what makes her school tick.

If you're like me you want to know what everyone is doing for their school, the books, the scheduling, and the activities. They just might be doing something I haven't heard about! Now here's what I especially like about Linda's post on Gearing Up for Another Homeschool Year, she came back and edited her entry with updates! Find out what this family is doing for school this year.

Now this week's Porch theme is music, and this post on Children's Miracle Music sounds really neat! See, I told you you can find out about curriculum and cool stuff you never heard of when you ask what people use and do in their homeschool!

You've seen the curriculum, but what about the practical? How do you homeschool your children? Linda shares her thoughts on this often asked question.

I hope all of you are getting back into the swing of things and that you'll take a moment to go say hello to Linda! Oh, don't forget to check out all the cool things in her sidebar as well!

Featured Blogger ~ OldPathsMom

Posted 11:47 AM, Sep. 4, 2009

Just recently, here on the Porch, JoJo commented that some of her favorite books are blogs. I agree, and today I'd like to introduce you to OldPathsMom of Adorning Grace. It's always a pleasure to read her blog, and as her homeschooling journey unfolds, it's like reading a good story about a character you love!

Have you ever read over some of your own old blog posts and been impressed or encouraged by them? Not all of our posts are like that, some may even be slightly embarrassing, but when we re-read one of our old posts it's like going back to a well-loved familiar book and getting re-aquainted. OldPathsMom did that just recently and her post is encouraging to everyone, not just herself.

Where are you in the process of homeschooling? OldPathsMom wants us to know that we shouldn't be in bondage on this path, but enjoying the journey and freedome that homeschooling offers!

For our Back-to-School theme this week, why not read Following the School Bus? I know school buses have become more prominent in our families lives! One stops right outside our house every afternoon. We watch the children get off, relieved to finally be home and wanting to go play, but homework still awaits them and the day is quickly dwindling away. It breaks my heart to watch them!

Let OldPathsMom know that you've enjoyed her posts and her blog!

Featured Blogger - sixhotpeppers

Posted 9:27 PM, Aug. 14, 2009

Now how perfect is this? This week's Porch theme is heat, and I find a really great blog called SixHotPeppers! Now that is some heat!

What should you do when it gets hot? Make homemade ice cream! The sixhotpeppers show you how without using an ice cream churn. Yummy!

The next best thing to ice cream when it gets hot is cool and juicy watermelon! Only the peppers are going to show a watermelon book that they made. Very cute!

If you love lapbooking then you are going to love the sixhotpeppers blog because lapbooking is what they do. Now, when you mix ice cream, watermelon, and children, what do you get? Fingerprints! They will be everywhere! So why not study fingerprinting and do a lapbook to show what you have learned?

If you can take the heat, go on over and say hello to sixhotpeppers!

Er, ah, uh-hum. Yes, well . . . let's get back to our regularly scheduled programming of Featured Blogger shall we? Moving to Kentucky has had me a bit distracted!

All right, let me introduce you to a fantastic blogger that I hope to meet someday in person! Heather amazes me because she has several special needs children and she has some special needs herself and on top of all of that, she homeschools! Check out gfcfmomofmany.

Need some gluten free recipes? It's always nice to have these on hand even if no one in your immediate family needs to watch their gluten intake. Some day you may have a guest or special potluck to go to and having just the right snack will be a relief to those you are offering to feed! Heather posts about gluten free foods on Fridays!

While it isn't Christmas yet, and I'm not a supporter of stores selling their wares to me in September, this poem was way to good to not pass on to you. I cried, because I could see my son, and my way of thinking. "He told his first lie," what parent gets happy about that? One who is thrilled to learn that her child has a new level of understanding. Trust me, it's a milestone, and each one is something to get happy about.

You can also find Heather right here on the Company Porch each Friday with Special Words for Special Needs. She blesses me each week with the topics she shares!

Say hello to Heather, comments are gluten and caesin free! Come to think of it, they're even fat free! Leave a bunch all over HSB!

Featured Blogger - JustKaren

Posted 2:27 AM, Jun. 27, 2009
This week's Featured Blogger is JustKaren of Homeschooling 3 in Tennessee!

I knew she was the perfect choice when I came across her blog entry Lazy Days of Summer. It fits perfectly with this week's Porch theme on summer, and paints the perfect picture of summer life as well.

We also tend to think that summertime means downtime. While this post, Downtime? . . . Whats that?, wasn't about summer itself, it still fits in with some of misconceptions of summer being a time to relax. It also let's you in on a little bit more of who Karen is.

This post, The Coolest Classroom, was great, I have a few pictures of this nature myself! Share your wacky pictures with Karen and be sure to let us know about them too! We'd all love to see them!

Even if you don't have a picture to share, let Karen know you stopped in by leaving her a comment so she can get to know you too.
