Blog Deletion Policy at HSB

The HomeschoolBlogger support team would like to make clear what our blog deletion policy is. First and foremost, we do not delete blogs for no good reason at all. 
 
Blogs are deleted for one of four reasons:
  • Violation of the Terms of Use
  • The blogger has clearly stated that they are blogging elsewhere
  • The blogger has asked us to delete their blog
  • The blog has been abandoned

We do not have to give notice before deleting a blog, which is clearly stated in the Terms of Use that every blogger has agreed to in order to start their free blog at HSB. This is not unique to just HomeschoolBlogger. Other blog providers usually note in their Terms of Use that they do not have to give notice as well. (The only exception I am aware of at this time is of blogs that are paying the provider for space.)

If a blog is in violation of the Terms of Use we may just temporarily disable the blog, notify you of the problem and ask that it be corrected. This depends however on the severity of the violation. 

We delete blogs that clearly state they are now blogging elsewhere because we have no obligation to bloggers who are just using HSB as storage space. Each blog takes up bandwidth - and bandwidth isn't cheap. We also do not have an obligation to help your readers find you blogging elsewhere. It is not permissible to keep a blog in order to just be able to leave comments. Unless a blog is set to be viewed by only HSB members then you can still leave a comment. The word Anonymous can be deleted on the comment page and your username or new blog/website address can be put into that field.

We notify the HSB community when we are about to do a blog clean-up of abandoned blogs. At that time we just ask that you login to your account. Just logging in does not guarantee that your blog won't be deleted at a future point. Abandoned blogs can be but are not limited to those that have been up but have no posts, have not been logged into for over a year, the e-mail address is not current, or state that they are now blogging elsewhere. 

There have been instances where a blog has been deleted and we tried to notify the blogger beforehand but their e-mail address was not current. For this reason you can see how important it would be to keep your e-mail updated. If you change your e-mail address please also let us know by e-mail so that we can make sure our files have the latest information. 

Keep in mind that Section 15 (g) and (h) of the HSB Terms of Use covers User Conduct even after a blog has been deleted or disabled.

We hope this clears up any confusion about our blog deletion policy.

The “Art” of Image Copyright

A baby polar bear cuddles in his mother’s paws.  Glaciers calve into the icy sea with a mighty crash of spray.  Racecars speed down the track, their images dramatically blurred by the camera’s shutter. 

These photographs, and many more, grace the ‘pages’ of the Internet, turning the electronic world into a kaleidoscope of fantastic images.  Through the magic of technology, many of these photos can be cut and pasted with the click of a mouse – a click which all too often proves as illegal as it was easy. 

Copyright law applies to images and artwork as well as words.  Just as the law prohibits you from taking someone else’s article and reprinting it without permission, displaying someone else’s photograph or artwork on your website, blog or Internet space without a proper license constitutes illegal copyright infringement.  It doesn’t matter whether a copyright notice appears on the website displaying the image, or whether the image is “watermarked” to prevent copying.  Copyright attaches to photographs and artwork at the moment of creation, and reproduction or use without proper authorization or “license” is against the law. 

“But the Internet is so big.  They’ll never catch me.  Besides, how much trouble can one little photograph cause?”  The answer: a lot.  Copyright infringement carries potential penalties and fines that can cost infringers thousands of dollars or more – regardless of the nature of the infringing use.  Intent isn’t an element of the law, so “I didn’t know” doesn’t provide a defense.  The only questions are: “Did you display the artwork,” and “Did you have a license or other legal right to do so.”  If the first answer is “yes” and the second one “no,” you’re liable, whether or not you intended to commit a crime. 

As far as “getting caught” – it happens far more often than you might think.  Large companies often employ professional searchers who scan the Internet looking for violating uses.  Independent photographers and artists perform their own searches or hire companies that contract use of their images and monitor compliance across the World Wide Web.  Don’t make the mistake of believing, “I’m too small to get caught.”  That kind of thinking violates both Biblical and Copyright law – neither of which takes kindly to deliberate transgression. 

How do you stay safe?  Follow the same rules you use when dealing with printed materials, but keeping in mind that there is no “excerpt” when it comes to photographs and other art.  When you use the image, you use the entire work.  

Before pasting an image onto your website or blog, make sure you have the legal right to display it.  Did you find the image on a website containing an “open source” or “public domain” license that specifically permits your desired use?  Remember to accept licenses from the copyright holder or image owner only.  If you’re not positive the permission is good, send the webmaster or page owner an e-mail to make sure.  If the website has no license terms, you can also contact the owner or copyright holder and ask for permission to display the image.  Unless the owner makes a living by licensing images, he or she may gladly consent to your use.  Remember to be polite, no matter what answer you receive. 

At the end of the day, no permission means no display.  If you can’t obtain a license for your intended use, then you can’t use the image.  Without permission, publication is violation, and no image is worth painting yourself into a legal corner.

URGENT HSB NEWS! Monitor Your Child's Private Messages!

Parents, please pay close attention to private messages received on your children's accounts.  You should read all messages your children receive via the Internet - whether or not received through HSB!

Last night one brave girl stepped forward to let us know that she and a friend were receiving inappropriate private messages.  When we learned the messages originated from a HSB blogger, we banned his account immediately.  Although the originating blog contained no inappropriate content, the blogger apparently used his blog address to prey on young girls via private messages.  We were shocked to find that these private messages have been sent out to several young girls and that a few of them had even responded to him.  This problem is not unique to HSB, and unfortunately there is no way for HSB (or any other service provider) to completely prevent predators from contacting minors who blog or use private messaging systems.  This is why each and every parent needs to take responsibility for knowing exactly what their children do, and who they talk to, on the Internet.

If you or your children receive any x-rated private messages, please e-mail HSB.  Copy and paste the entire private message (without editing, regardless of content) into the e-mail along with the blog URL of the blogger who sent it to you.  HSB needs this information to confirm which blog sent the message and to document the issue for purposes of banning the relevant account.

Homeschooling Around the World

Homeschool Nations Greetings!

All of us at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and Homeschool Nations want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day.

You might be wondering, "What is Homeschool Nations?" And you might be interested to know that we're looking for someone just like you to possibly join us. Read on...

Homeschool Nations is a unique community of homeschooling families located across North America and around the world. Volunteer coordinators provide current information about homeschooling in their state, province, or country. Several of our coordinators also serve in leadership roles within their state and local homeschool organizations so they've got the inside story for their region! Homeschool families serving in the military can also find specialized information and support in the Military Homeschool section.
 
Assistant to the Publishers, Kris Price, took a few moments recently to talk with Pat Mills, Homeschool Nations Manager, about her job responsiblities and what she sees as the ultimate purpose of Homeschool Nations.
 
1. What exactly do you do as Manager of Homeschool Nations?

I seek out new people to be the coordinators for our blogs. I help to give them ideas to post about for our readers. I am there to keep the "behind the scenes" running smoothly so that they are able to do their jobs. I guess you could also say that I "coordinate" the coordinators. They can come to me if they have questions regarding things to post or if they have  someone who needs help in finding information for their area.  I stay in touch with the staff at TOS and pass information to the coordinators so that they can keep YOU informed.
 
2. What does a Homeschool Nations coordinator do?

We ask that our coordinators post at least once a week during the regular school year. They can share anything from activities in the different areas of their state, field trips, contests to enter, helpful hints for schooling, to changes in their state laws on homeschooling and support group information. They also keep everyone informed with what is available with TOS Magazine and the Schoolhouse Store, and about the happenings at HomeschoolBlogger.com.
 
3. What is their purpose and why are they important? 

Our coordinators do exactly what the title says, they "coordinate" all of the vast amount of information that is available to homeschooling families. They break it down for just their own state or province and give it to you in a manner that new or experienced homeschooling moms can use. They don't just work for HSN, they work for all of you. They stay in tune with support groups, state conventions and anything to do with homeschooling, to put you in touch with what you might need.
 
4. What are the benefits to being a coordinator?

Each state coordinator receives a free subscription to The Old Schoollhouse Magazine while they are on staff with us and they also receive on issue each quarter to share with local homeschoolers in their area. Each year, TOS gives them the opportunty to give out 3 "gift subscriptions" to others. An added benefit is that they get to be a part of a great team, working together to help bring children home, where they belong.
 
5. What countries currently have coordinators? 

So far we have someone blogging for us in The United Kingdom, Australia, and the following provinces in Canada: British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. Saskatchewan will be starting up this month.
 
6. Are there states or other areas still needing coordinators?

Oh yes, we still have several provinces in Canada, then Guam, and Puerto Rico. Here in the states we would love to have somebody sign on for Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, Vermont and Washington, DC.
 
7. What else would you like people to know about Homeschool Nations?

It is a great community to be a part of. One of the best things is how Homeschool Nations is set up. You are free to "visit" any other state, province or country that you want to. You are able to read about what is going on in other areas and see how we all really are just the same, doing they same thing for our children. There is  just no end to where we can go, reaching out to each other around the world, while doing what God has called us to do in teaching our own children.

The Backyard ~ Come Visit Us!

There aren’t many places on the internet that an entire family can enjoy.  Some websites are for adults, some are for children, and few are geared toward Christians.  This can make it difficult for a homeschool mom to browse the world wide web for resources when it is possible that her children could be looking over her shoulder at any moment.  Ads that display immodesty, text loudly declaring the wonders of selfish living, and links that take you who knows where have to be sifted through in order to get to the gold.

I have sat at my computer wearily wondering why there can’t be more websites minus all the garbage.  Then I unearthed HSB and I was very pleased to find that not only is it a blog community for parents and children to take part in, it is also a website relatively free of the debris of the world.  That doesn’t mean everyone will agree with every blog and parents should never let down their guard when it comes to the internet, but HSB does have family-friendly standards and guidelines that every blogger agrees to.

HomeschoolBlogger is a mine of friendships with real homeschooling families like your own and resources to materials that you can really use.  The real treasures are the HSB Company Porch (That's right here!) and The Backyard. These two company blogs strive to be among the few websites that are family-friendly and family fun!  

HomeschoolBlogger has been around for only two short years, but in that time a few things became apparent.  First a large portion of the over 17,000 blogs at HSB are those of homeschool students, which we are very grateful for.  Second, while the HSB Company Porch is available for everyone to read, it didn’t have articles a six year old would get excited about.  Third was safety.  How could we put up an article for the students without giving undesirables a place to lurk? 

The answer came in a blog called The HSB Backyard. We like to think of it as the place where all the neighborhood children hang out and have fun getting to know each other under the supervision of the resident mom.  As safety is always a #1 priority at HSB we needed The Backyard to be “fenced in”, so we made it to be viewable by only HSB members.

Next we made a list of topics we felt that students of all ages would enjoy and we asked student bloggers to write them.  The Backyard has its own Featured Blogger of the Week, just like the Porch.  The Featured Blogger is chosen by a set criteria; their blog must either be glorifying to God, encouraging to others, uplifting, or inspiring.  Other weekly articles include animal facts, bits of history, book reviews, jokes and riddles, poetry by other bloggers, and fun pictures for the students to make up captions for. 

If your homeschooler doesn’t have a blog with HSB you might want to consider it after you’ve taken a good look around for yourself.  Blogs are a fun way for children to interact with each other, sort of like a modern day pen-pal.  Many parents have found that their reluctant writers enjoy blogging and it is a great way to communicate with your children.

Before your child starts a blog be sure to print and sign the HSB Parental Consent form and send it to us as per the directions on the form. 

HomeschoolBlogger is a treasure waiting to be discovered by you and your family!  We want to be the gold sitting at the bottom of your pan after you’ve sifted through the muddy water of the internet.

Don't worry, clicking that button does not mean your current blog will be deleted.  Instead you can create a new blog and manage those blogs with your one account!  Start a photo blog, craft blog, political blog, or some other special interest blog.  It's up to you!

I don't know if many of you know that we have a famous author or two blogging here at HSB.  One of whom is SuzyScribbles.  She has started another blog here at HSB designed especially for your relutctant writers. 

www.homeschoolblogger.com/WritingWorkshop/ is for the benefit of all our homeschool kids. I know teaching kids to write is so hard for moms. I put together a writing workbook (Reach for the Stars), which I sell locally. But for HSB, I turned the pages into pdf files so bloggers can download them. I will post a lesson with downloads each Wednesday for 17 weeks (a semester's worth), starting this week.

It sounds like a wonderful class!  Why not go check it out?  It's free and easy to use.  That's something homeschoolers like!
