Jamin's Internet Academy ~ Dance Mat Typing Program
Posted 1:29 AM, Jan. 3, 2007
Welcome to Jamin's Internet Academy! I am a homeschooling Mom who is fascinated with finding low cost - no cost ways to supplement our homeschooling through the internet. There is a treasure trove of free goodies online. So join me here on the Front Porch every Wednesday as I share a little of what I have found with you!
HERE is a really cool FREE typing program for kids! I had my 12 year old take a look at it. Here is his "review". I thought that the dance mat typing game was very fun, after just about 45 minutes of typing with it I am getting much better at typing. I found the game one of the most fun educational games I have ever played. I am definitely going to keep playing until I can type very well, which at this rate, will be soon. The game has different animals on each stage who sing for you every few minutes. If you hit a wrong key then a voice says “type on me!” and the correct one flashes on a in-game keyboard. The first stage teaches the “home row” (ASDFGHJKL;)and then each stage after that teaches you two keys. (the 2nd I and E the 3rd U and R the 4th T and Y etc) there are 4 levels, and within each there are around 3 stages. As you go along at the bottom of the screen there is a bar that shows how many lines you have typed and how many you have to go. When you finish each stage the animal of that stage congratulates you and then does a little dance. Other than that there really isn't any relation with dancing oddly enough. The only thing that I found annoying about the game is that the little voices that say “Type me!” get a little annoying after time. I find the whole game pretty fun and a very good educational game over all. I definately recommend it to you. This program is recommended for ages 7-11 and also has additional worksheets you can print for free to get more practice. Jamin is the homeschooling Mom of 3 great kids, ages 2, 5 and 12. It is the day before Thanksgiving and you just realized you forgot to cover the signifigance of Thanksgiving with the kiddos? Here are some quick resources to bring them up to speed.
Encyclopedia Smithsonian - Thanksgiving Wikipedia - Thanksgiving Thanksgiving on the net - Lots of resources here! THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION A DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER "Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor-- and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint committee requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially in a form of government for their safety and happiness. "Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday...to be devoted by the people of these states to the service of that great and glorious Being Who is the beneficent Author of all that was, that is, or that will be--that we may then all unite in rendering Him our sincere and humble thanks... "And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions...to render our national Government a blessing to the people...to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations...and to bless them with good government, peace and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true knowledge and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of prosperity as He alone knows to be best..." --President George Washington, 1798 THANKSGIVING PRAYER
"As the Pilgrims did almost four centuries ago, we gratefully give thanks for the beauty, abundance, and opportunity this great land offers. We also thank God for the blessings of freedom and prosperity; and, with gratitude and humility, we acknowledge the importance of faith in our lives. Throughout the Thanksgiving holiday, let us renew our commitment to make our country and our world better...This Thanksgiving, we recognize the ties of friendship and respect that bind us together. And we renew our pledge to uphold the timeless principles of freedom, equality, and opportunity that have made our country into a great Nation. By working together, we will continue to build mutual trust, peace, and hope for all across this land and around the world." Jamin is the homeschooling Mom of 3 great kids, ages 2, 5 and 12.
