Memorial Day this Week on the Porch

Posted 1:13 AM, May. 18, 2009
Which is it that usually kicks off the summer season for your family: Memorial Day, the last day of school, or the First Day of Summer? I think it's usually Memorial Day because everyone loves to take their first camping trips, have a big bbq, or some other fun-filled summer activity.

Memorial Day isn't about summer though. It's about remembering servicemen and women who have died while defending the freedoms they hold dear. Click here to read a past THM that will link you to all kinds of great websites to help you learn more about Memorial Day.

I hope you'll enjoy this week's articles on the Porch and your Memorial Day weekend!

Testing this Week on the Porch

Posted 11:55 PM, May. 11, 2009
This is a test of the HSB system. This is only a test. In the even of a real blog post, you will see text to verify the importance of the emergency. Beeeeeeeeeeepppppppp!!!

Sorry, couldn't help myself after I wrote the title for this post.

What it means is that Porch team will be writing their articles geared towards testing. Although, Craft Corner and Classical Education are excused because I'm not sure how many crafts you could do for the subject of testing. Classical Education did talk about Latin, and I think Latin is a pretty good thing to know while testing because if you come across a question you aren't quite sure of the answer to, if it has any Latin in it, you might be able to take a good stab at it.

How you feel about testing is going to be different for everyone due, in large part, to your state's requirements. Still, you'll enjoy this edition of a past Homeschool Minute on testing. I just love this newsletter and the wisdom of experienced homeschool writers like Nancy Carter, Deborah Wuehler, Todd Wilson, Ruth Beechick, and Molly Green.

Do I have any wisdom on testing? If your state requires it, prepare your child with a pre-test. Get lots of rest. The day before the test just relax, don't try to cram in more "knowledge." Let your child know that no matter what their score on the test, you will still love them.

Field Trips this Week on the Porch

Posted 12:49 PM, Apr. 27, 2009
This week the Porch Team will be talking about field trips. Field trips are fun, and make whatever subject you are learning about come to life. I think my families favorite field trip was to a large bakery. I'm talking assembly line bread making here! It was fun to see the loaves travel down the "tracks" to go to where it would be sliced, and then bagged. At the end of the tour, all the children received a miniature loaf of bread, bagged and everything to look just like the regular loaves we had just watched being packaged.

Now, my family hadn't been studying about bread, bakeries, or mass production. We had been talking about efficiency, how we needed to do our schoolwork and chores in a timely manner, to do the job right, and that other people depended on our getting our own jobs done before they may be able to start or complete their own work. The bakery helped to demonstrate that.

Take advantage of the field trip opportunities that your support group puts together. If you can and enjoy what the Porch team has to share with you on this week!

Gardening, this Week on the Porch

Posted 12:26 AM, Apr. 20, 2009

Let me share with you what I know about gardening.

  1. Don't plant anything until the snow is melted off Black Butte.
  2. You have to keep things watered.

I don't garden. I don't even do house plants. Quite frankly, it has surprised me that I've managed to keep my children alive all these years. I suppose it's because they have voices and are mobile. Plants aren't.

One year my husband bought me a cactus. Certainly, I should be able to keep a cactus alive, right? If it wasn't for my husband, it would have died long ago. IT's not that I don't try, but I just don't have a knack for it. I water too much, or I water too little. I stick the plant in the wrong kind of light. I appreciate plants, very much, we just don't get along together.

As for Black Butte, that only works for those who live anywhere near it. I only know this piece of gardening information because it is repeated year after year among the gardening enthusiasts, "Snow's still on the butte, can't plant outdoors until it melts."

However, here is what I do know, that is well worth sharing with you. You don't have to be a gardening enthusiast yourself to interest your children in it. Seeds are relatively cheap (and a whole lot more entertaining then cheap toys that break after a few uses), so just go buy a packet or two, tell your children to pick a spot of ground, and plant those seeds in it. If you want to give them a Bible/science lesson, tell them to plant seeds in a rocky place, in soft dirt, and in a place where no matter how much you water, it all drains away rapidly. See what grows.

A couple of my children enjoy gardening, in spite of my defunct capabilities. I'm so glad!

Homeschool Conventions this Week on the Porch

Posted 1:04 AM, Apr. 13, 2009

It's been several years since I've had the opportunity to go to a homeschool convention. I loved going every year when I lived in Hawaii! I met some wonderful homeschooling parents, learned so many things, and it really helped to charge my batteries for the next school year. Conventions are fun!

If you aren't sure that going to a homeschool convention is worth it, you need to read this article by Dena Wood. Once you've decided that, yes, a convention is worth your time and money, then read this article by Kim Wolf. She'll tell you how to get the most out of a homeschool convention.

I hope you get to go to a convention this year, and maybe someday I'll get to attend one again.

Easter this Week on the Porch

Posted 1:41 AM, Apr. 6, 2009
Easter is next Sunday and many of us will be celebrating the resurrection of Christ. It is so awesome what Jesus did for us, and I don't mean, "like, cool man." I truly mean that I am filled with awe and wonder.

I don't have any wonderful stories from my past about Easter. How one Easter our family did some neat-o project, or offered our thoughts as we sat down to a family Easter dinner, and it was just so touching and all of that. That oh so memory making moment never happened for us on Easter day itself. However, that doesn't mean that we have never cried or had our hearts filled to the brim by the incredible gift that Christ gave to us.

It was the late night that I sat on the bathroom floor trying to finish reading a really good book. When one line in the story explained to me why Jesus had to die for us. At that moment I felt like blinders were pulled from my eyes, my heart swelled with joy, and the awe was so overwhelming I can still feel it today. That was 14 years ago.

It was the day my little girl came and asked me, with her eyes full of fear and sorrow, if she could have Jesus in her heart. She realized that she was a sinner and needed Him.

It was the night that my special-needs son got out of bed, a very rare occurance for him, and he came into the living room, sat down beside me on the couch, and said, "I want Jesud to wiv in my hart."

It's every single time someone I love accepts Him. That's when I am once again struck by the beauty of the gift. How perfect it was. Why it's the only way we can be saved from our sins.

Nature Walks and Notebooks this Week on the Porch

Posted 12:20 AM, Mar. 30, 2009
When you wake up to a beautiful day, toss the schedule to the winds and head out into nature. It's a relief to the mind after having been stuck indoors for most of the winter. This week, the Porch team will share all of their nature walking/notebooking tips to encourage you.

Now, I love going on nature walks and my family hikes as often as we can. We observe what we can: rocks, sticks, grasses, trees, the occasional flower, and sometimes we are blessed to not have stepped on the snake in the path, or get bitten by some over friendly chipmunk. On the whole though, we don't discover anything too fantastic.

It's rather disheartening for me to read some of the blogs where families went out on a hike and discovered a gorgeous mushroom, a rare botanical speciman, or entire herd of elk that calmly grazes in some poetical setting, allowing the family to watch them until the sun goes down. They have memories to last them for as long as their minds work, and they discuss how everything is intricately woven together. I'm very happy for them mind you, I just have no idea how they manage to do it.

My family comes home with bug bites to remind them of the hike, whines about blisters (that would be me), and we have 200 photos of unfocused leaves, and one very extreme close up of my son's nostril. Amazingly, it is focused perfectly.

Yet, we try time and again, to go out and find something that we can come home and brag about on our blogs. Call it a treasure hunt of nature, if you will. We're just a bunch of failed, nature, treasure hunters, but it's the thrill of the hunt that lures us back time and again. Why? God isn't only in breath taking fungus, awe inspiring flora, or regal fauna. You can see his handywork in bark, bees, and the hundreds of sticks that my boys pick up along the way. All of nature has His signature. It is truly amazing. Don't miss out on the adventure of exploring His natural world!

Rain This Week on the Porch

Posted 12:29 AM, Mar. 23, 2009

That title sounds rather like a weather forecast! This week's theme is rain, so get out your umbrellas and enjoy what the Porch Team has to share on the subject from their unique perspectives.

I'm not sure what happened to the sun I mentioned on Friday, but This weekend we've had rain, snow, more rain, and finally some sun. Sounds like Spring to me!

We have a new Porch Team member, Taneil Linschied is back, but this time doing the Craft Corner. Taneil used to write Knit Bits for us a couple of years ago. The craft she shows you is how to make a rain stick. Poor thing forgot we were now doing a theme and had a dandy craft all done up for you, when she remembered that she needed a craft for rain. Hmmm . . . So a quick rain stick post it is. (She's not happy with the result of it, so please give her some slack this week and trust me, she got all of her crafting genes from some one either than myself so her craft projects will be GREAT!)

Dianna Maxwell will be very much missed, she did some wonderful crafts for us. I'm so glad that she was able to write for the Porch as long as she did! Taneil has some tough shoes to fill.

What can I share with you about rain? It's wet. I don't like to be wet. Still, running through the rain drops with your children is fun, and builds memories that your children will remember forever.

Playing in the puddles after a rain storm is fun too! Just ask my boys. A few Springs ago, I found them playing happily in a big puddle. It was so deep they could sit in it like a bathtub. At first I was upset because it looked like they had stripped and jumped in. Turned out they had come back into the house, very quietly so I wouldn't know, and put on their swim trunks and went back outside to "swim" in that puddle. I have the cutest pictures of them with mud streaming in their eyes and in their hair. They didn't care, they were so happy and mama didn't get mad at them!

You and your children need to enjoy the rain, both outside and here on the Porch.

Saving Time this Week on the Porch

Posted 1:46 AM, Mar. 9, 2009

The Porch Team is going to try something new for this month and if it works well, we'll keep it going. Each week a new theme will be introduced by the Porch Team and they will write their articles around that theme. This week, due to the time change, we're going to talk about Saving Time. So far this week we've started off with Julia telling us how to save time with Classical Education. Tomorrow, Dell will tell us how to save time while Taming the Chaos, and so on through the week, with each of the writers.

Saving time is something homeschoolers do just in the act of homeschooling! We save time without having to hand out papers to a class of students. We save time because we don't have to wait for everyone to line up at the door. We save time when we combine subjects and grade levels. It's just natural for us to educate our children efficiently. When we do, it saves more time for snuggling up on the couch, playing at the park, visiting friends, or exploring subjects even deeper.

Here's a fun way to learn more about Daylight Saving Time: the history, the controversy, anecdotes, and more. Each little cloud contains information or leads to another web of information all dealing with Daylight Saving Time.

We hope you'll enjoy our themes and our topics! If you have an idea for a theme you'd like us to cover, let us know. All of us would love to hear from you, so please leave a comment.

Shop with the Bloggers!

Posted 3:08 PM, Nov. 21, 2008

A couple of years ago we thought it would be fun to have all homeschool blogger businesses in one spot to make it easier to find them for the holiday shopping season. It was such a big hit, it's been decided to keep it going! If you listed your business in the previous Shop with the Bloggers promo, please note that you will need to do so again. We're starting with a clean slate. Also, if you have the Shop with the Bloggers button on your blog sidebar, please replace with the new button below as the source page is now here on HomeschoolBlogger.com.

Instead of fighting the crowds at the malls and shopping centers, wouldn't you rather support your fellow bloggers home businesses?  Many folks want to shop with home businesses rather than the big superstores, but sometimes it's just harder to find them. Never fear though, we decided to make a list of these businesses to make your online shopping easier.

If you have a business and would like to share it with the blogosphere, please do the following:

  • Add the name of your business in the Mr. Linky box below.

  • Link it to your business website. If that's your blog, GREAT!

  • Leave a comment telling us about what you have to offer or any specials you might have.

  • Copy the shopping button code below to add to your sidebar or website. Even if you don't have a business, you can use the button to support our bloggers with home businesses.

  • ~Note, this is a family-friendly website. Any links deemed inappropriate will be deleted.~

Whether you are a shopper or home business owner, feel free to add our Shop with the Bloggers button to your sidebar to support our fellow bloggers!

*If you are having trouble pasting this code into a post, start a new entry page>click source>add the code where you would like it to show up and then click preview entry. If the button is there, you can then go back and edit your post in the normal setting.

Happy Shopping!
