Mondays on Mothering

Posted 1:52 PM, Apr. 14, 2008

How many of you have heard about ltjewel's Mondays on Mothering Meme for You?  All you have to do is write a post about why you love mothering and go to Bow of Bronze and sign in to Mr. Linky.  Just click on the image below and you will be taken there faster then you can back your minivan out of a tight spot.

What do I love about mothering?  I think it's that constant example of God's love for us.  When I do it right I know that it is how God loves us and when I do it wrong, I am instantly aware that it is NOT how God loves us.  It helps me in my walk with Christ, which hopefully makes me a better mother than I was the day before.  I am not a perfect mom but even though I have failed many times my children still love me and think that I am.  It's pretty humbling!

What do you love about mothering?  Write your own post and join the Mondays on Mothering Meme for You!

36th Carnival of Homesteading ~ It's an Education

Posted 12:23 PM, Feb. 11, 2008

Some of you maybe be wondering why on earth the HSB Company Porch is hosting the Carnival of Homesteading.  Here's the answer - homesteading is an education in and of itself.  When someone decides to take up homesteading they use reading, writing, math, science, history, and health.  It also takes a good deal of perseverance to homestead because it's not always pretty!

So here we are.  Are you ready to begin?  Good! Let's learn from each other.

Math

Now how many of you knew that you could make candy for your honeybees?  You can get the formula from Grandma Rosie's Texas Home.  Anyone can tell you that if you have happy bees that means you will have MORE bees!

Kathi from Oak Hill Homestead talks about feeding the birds and the Great Backyard Bird Count.  You could probably count a greater number of birds in your backyard if you are willing to feed them!

Cloth diapers.  Now that could go under science because you learn a lot about the human body while changing them.  It could go under health because they can be better for the baby.  It could also go under persaverance, I think that should be obvious why. Instead it is going under math because Amanda from My Learning Experience gives you all the details on how she launders them.  Not to mention it saves money!

Science

Sprittibee explains how she has been using nature as a teaching tool.  She has an awesome list of websites and other resources to help you explore and learn more about nature!

Aha!  Twins!  Newborns on a farm are always fun and Adventures in the 100 Acre Wood wants to share the good news.  Animal husbandry is always something good to know when you homestead.

I like donkeys and this little fellow looks like a real charmer.  Eeyore visited Homestead Mama from Love Learn Serve for a little while.

History

Belle from Born 100 Years to Soon tells us about her vintage quilt top - her birthday present.  It was a present from her Granny.  I'm sure she has a lot of stories to tell behind those old fabric pieces.

Health

Oh yum I love granola!  Kerimae from A Happy Home shares her recipe for make-it-your-own granola.  Trust me, once I make it, it will be my own, I won't be sharing it!

Wait!  Hold up on the granola.  I'll take the stuffed french toast please!  Oo la la!  The lighter side serves them up warm and cheesy.

I'm going to stick this post under health.  What?  Organization under heath?  Yeah, because I know when I'm not organized I lose my sanity.  Nancy from Lessons Learned on the Farm gives us a few of her (rare) organizing tips.

Maybe organization should of had its own category.  No matter, I'll take all the help I can get and Heart of Wisdom has an excellent idea for getting organized with good ol' dishpans

How about canning soaked dried beans - making your own pinto beansLaura Williams gives her super easy recipe that will have your pantry shelves filled up in no time.

It feels like spring so let's make salad! I'm game if The Sojourner is.  Salad doesn't always mean just fresh vegetables.

Perseverance

Tamara from Training Hearts shares her day with frozen pipes, cold weather, and box day!  All that mud is enough to try anyone's patience!

Here's someone else with broken pipes.  Jacque from Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths explains Murphy's law of pipes and propane.  Don't forget the wounded dog.  It's a country song in the making.

Eyebright from Defective Compositions shares her experience with making bread on her Homemaker-in-Training #3 post.  Which also happens to be about perseverance.

If you or your child has completed high school then you know what it takes to stick to it and keep going.  Jocelyn from A Pondering Heart shares what happens after high school Part 1: an introduction.

Here we are at the end!  "Wait!" You're hollering.  "What about reading and writing?"  Well, you just read it and the carnival entrants wrote it.

You can read the next Carnival of Homesteading at quietcajun's and if you are so inclined you could write up a post and enter it here.

Be Still My Beating Heart!

Posted 1:31 AM, Jun. 28, 2007

Very quietly, so as not to throw me into a heart attack, click HERE to view the latest post from jayfromcleveland.  Why all the ridiculous fan fare?  Because the last time Jay posted was back in February.  It takes a momentous occasion to get this man blogging.  (You may need to scroll down a ways to read the blog entry.)

That's the way it is with famous authors.  They forget the blogs that made them great.

Welcome back Jay!  We've missed you!

Carnival of Homeschooling #71 ~ Southern Hospitality

Posted 2:04 AM, May. 8, 2007

Welcome to the HSB Company Porch!
Come on up and sit yerself down in that rocker there or you can set down next to me here on the porch swing.  It's always nice to have a neighbor to visit with.
Would you like a tall, cool, glass of tea?  It's served real sweet here in the south!

To kick things off Eyecorn would like to share some Southern Humor from her blog Greek Roots In American Soil.

Donna C also gives an excellent post for teaching our children about the true meaning of Southern Hospitality from her blog Homeschooling Only One.

Have you heard about The Town Without Children?  Leticia who blogs over yonder at cause of our joy told me about it and my jaw just hit the ground!  To think!  A whole town where children aren't welcome and dogs are glorified.

Now I got this story, Homeschool Kids are “Socially Challenged”!,  from Beverly Hernandez, who got it from Jennie von Eggers.   Beverly said,  "The socialization question seems to be the old-standby, passive aggressive attack, by those outside spectators of the homeschool movement. I love what Jennie von Eggers sent to me after being questioned, "Aren’t you worried about them not getting enough socialization?"   I don't know about you but that's the least of my worries.

ChristineMM shares that her book organization project is near completion (phew). You can peek in on her blog The Thinking Mother to read Organizing Books, Again

Are you hungry?  How about some pie? It's my mama's secret recipe.
If there's one thing that everyone knows, it's that homeschoolers and southerners are very giving people. From recipes to contests, or recipe contests!

Sprittibee shares a 10% discount on a super new homeschool online Art program in her post entitled “GeeArt”. Go check out her post and try their free online lesson to see if your kiddos might be interested in joining up.

Jullee Huy  of Homeschool Daze Blog tells about how her husband offered the gift of life in Kidney Donation – Our Journey, Part One.  Julee says, "I have never written very much about our adventure last year when my husband donated a kidney, we've passed the year anniversary and I haven't even mentioned it. Saturday is the annual Donate Life walk in our area, so I thought now would be a good time to write about our journey of organ donation. My husband has his own version, but I've never had the chance to write it from my perspective."

Judy from Consent of the Governed shares this contest for teens: Homeschoolers: Wilberforce Contest For High Schoolers.

Stephanie offers her recipe for Wild Greens posted at Stop the Ride! A perfect southern recipe!

Alasandra explains her experience with FAFSA , scholarships etc. and her excitement about her eldest graduating from the community college.  She gives us an excellent resourse for Financial Aid & Scholarships at her blog The Homeschool Cafe.

Would you mind holding this yarn for me?
You can't just sit on the porch and chin wag.  Holding yarn is better than shucking peas! Crafts and activities keep hands and minds busy and out of trouble.
What have your children been doing lately to keep busy?

I hear tell from Kris' Eclectic Homeschool that 4-H is a wonderful club for homeschoolers, and it has been a positive experience for her family with special needs children.  Special Needs Kids, Homeschooling and 4-H are a Wonderful Combination!

I like to go over to Jamin's blog, Just Call Me Jamin, every now and again to see what her family is up to.  This week you can join Jamin' and her kids as they learn about the process of mummification by mummifying Barbie's and GI Joe's.  It'll be a fun day!  I wish my family would have thought of How to Mummify a Barbie!

Lapbooks are an excellent way to keep hands and minds busy!  Eclectic Education shares her post Lapbooking 101

Lydia's blog, Little Blue School , is over in the next holler and she explains how How to Make Custom T-Shirts at Home.  This is one activity I plan on doing with my children!

Now Jimmie's blog hails all the way from China, and she has experienced a great amount of hospitality there.  One Child Policy Homeschool is also never short of fun and interesting things do such as a Pyromid Diorama with Three Types of Rocks  .  This entry highlights a 3-D project that can be used for any HS topic. Links to the PDF printables are included.

Keeping young children busy can sometimes tax a mother's patience.  Cindy West tells us about Busy Boxes on her blog On Our Journey Westward.  They have been a perfect way to keep her first grader busy while she works with her daughter.

Denise from Let's Play Math is full of ideas to keep young minds occupied!  The secret of the pharaoh?s treasure, part 2 is an adventure in math history, which includes a hands-on geometry project.

Mama Squirrel has been very busy Filling buckets and lighting fires, at Dewey's Treehouse.

One of the best ways to keep busy is to invite someone over.  Jennifer and her family are busy Preparing for Elise at Diary of 1.

Not sure what to do?  Then clean!  Ali and her kids of My God Given Mission Field  came across a book with recipes for homemade household cleaners, and put some together.  It was alot of fun, and very educational.  Messy too!  And to top it all off, the cleaners work just as good as store bought ones! There are even some pictures, documenting their time together doing Our First Chemistry Experiment.

It woud be impolite of me to start telling you how well my children are doing in school but asking you to tell me how your children are doing in school is always a good conversation starter!  I so enjoy finding out what others are using
and doing in their homeschools.

Janine writes about how a trip to the Vet turned into a learning experience; a $400 class on animal husbandry from Why Homeschool.

Patti Miller shares some interesting tips on Using Photography in Your Homeschool, which you'll find at All Info About Home Schooling.

What's So Great About Shakespeare?  Good question!  Linda Fay at Higher Up and Further In will explain why, when and how they study the Bard.

Homeschoolers enjoy telling others how their year, month, week, or day has gone.  (Thus all the homeschool blogs!)  Kelly at Pass The Torch says in April her Homeschool Experiment wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

Have you ever thought about the possibility that your child might need a GED?  Annette Berlin of Homeschooling Journey tells us 10 Ways to Prepare for the GED

Homeschoolers also love a good list of great resources!  Ted Reimers offers the Best web 2.0 online tools for College at CampusGrotto.

Rachel Star Thomson of Inklings tells us some entertaining tips for writing a solid essay, by a writing coach, in Writing Tips: What's the Point?

A Seussical Musical Study is the topic over at the blog At A Hen's Pace.  Jeanne suggests doing a unit study that covers some of Dr. Seuss' most beloved books.

We are all aware of the lack of certain subjects being taught in public schools.  Did you ever consider that Geography was one of them?  Mark Montgomery explains why in his post Geography Left Behind? Perhaps For Good Reason, at Textbook Evaluator

Let's take a photo tour of Little Acorns Treehouse classroom, complete with a floor plan and an explanation of what they have done to organize their space.  I love checking out how other homeschoolers set up their homes for the best possible learning enviornment.

Gena's blog, Home Where They Belong has post after post of what is taking place in public schools.  This Teacher Failed Spellling, demonstrates one of the many complaints that anti-homeschoolers offer as proof that homeschooling is not a good thing.  This teacher proves that you don't have to be a spelling whiz to educate children.

Elena LaVictoire gives a report on her family's recent experience with the SAT and as a homeschooler auditioning for a public high school's magnet music program. Stumbling blocks along the way - or missing the milestones can be found at My Domestic Church.

The Deputy Headmistress has a review and sample pages from the Educator's Guide to the Young People's Story of Our Heritage at The Common Room.

Southern Hospitality isn't limited to friendly talk on the porch.
Encouraging friends and neighbors with personal testimonies, advice  and sometimes just a jar of pick-a-lilly is what Southerners do best.

Valerie Watne wants us to know that this article/posting is to bring comfort to those mom's who are struggling to get finished with their curriculum by the end of the school year. She let's moms know they are not alone and everything will be alright in Counting Our Pages at just4homeschoolfamilies.

Summer M shares her tips on what to do when one parent is against homeschooling at her blog Mom Is Teaching

Mistakes Happen!  Adventuring with 3 Boyz explains that no matter how much you try to make everything perfect in your homeschool -- you are bound to make a mistake. There is no way not to but ... letting God fill in the Gaps and trying your best is the only options we have.

Lizzie from A Dusty Frame says, "I just share what we do for school as encouragement to others that if I can do this while my husband is in prison then they can homeschool too :)"  She doesn't know it, but she encourages me!  Here's What School Looks Like in Our House.

Nikki explains that her article today is on the simple things in life and how to encourge your children to enjoy the small things. 7ValleysHomeschool shares a Simple Time.

Sometimes we need to reflect on how we started homeschooling.  My twenty cents keeps moving is taking a look at things she underestimated when she started homeschooling-- the good and the bad, in Homeschool - What I Underestimated.

Jacque Dixon explains why back talking in her home has finally caused her to draw the line and how her children will now respond in Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am from her blog Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths.

Last week's much-publicized estimate of what a stay-at-home mom is worth dollar-wise is not accurate for homeschool moms; one important factor was left out of the mix according to Barbara Frank.  She's right and she's probably also right that The Check Probably Isn't In the Mail....  Rats.

Barb is hoping to share with other homeschooling moms the idea that sometimes we need to step back and refresh ourselves when things are too chaotic. Charlotte Mason wrote about this a century ago and it is still true today. Permission from Miss Mason for Mom to Play presented by The Heart of Harmony.

Dana of Principled Discovery offers encouragement to military families homeschooling overseas with the facts.  Don't let the government bully you.  Especially Military homeschoolers in Germany.

It's been fun having you visit us here on the HSB Company Porch!
Before you go I leave you with a couple of posts.

Dr. Bruce Shortt reveals yet another harsh truth about public  schools  in his article  Will Your Child Be a Christian?  at World Net DailyThis is one in depth article on the spiritual battle for our children you don't want to miss!  Even if your children are homeschooled what you learn from Dr. Bruce Shortt will impower you for talking to your friends and neighbors about homeschooling.

Finally, as you all pile into your separate vehicles, take a look at the new van over at
Musings From a Catholic Bookstore!  Ian says, "I Think We are Officially a Large Family"

Next week's Carnival of Homeschooling will be held at Palm Tree Pundit.  I hope all of you will send in your submission.  If you have never taken part in the CoH before then you can find out how at Why Homeschool

Thanks y'all for comin'!
