The Busy Woman ~ When All Else Fails Release Control

Posted 12:24 AM, Jun. 4, 2007
I started writing this on Monday, May 28th. I'm proud to say that I started back to the gym this morning to get my walking and running stamina up for the 2007 Walk To Cure Diabetes. It's been months since I was on a treadmill. The family didn't want me to do anything until after my tests but heck, that could be another month! That's when it hit me that either way I'm going to try to get into shape. So why should I wait?

I also realized something while at the gym today. It's only difficult for me to get out of bed to get to the gym in the morning. Once I'm there, the working out part is not a big deal. (It also didn't hurt that hubby got me cute workout clothes. {smile}) So I sort of quizzed a couple of ladies while there and they said the same thing. They only have trouble getting out of bed and getting to the gym.  Once they are there, it is fine.  What does it take to get YOU dressed and off to the gym or for a walk? Ask yourself and see what you say.

The only way I got to this place is by releasing control to God.  This meant giving up many mundane things that I enjoyed doing during the day and telling people that while I really would love to chat a bit, I'm taking control of my time and right now that time has to be for my health.  People appreciated my honesty and didn't hold it against me.  This freed me up to volunteer for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) which is my passion.  Helping them heals my heart.  That's good for my health.  (Make sense?)

It's now Tuesday and I had a great doctors appointment. I no longer have nodules on my lung. I just knew it was nothing. God told me so! {wink} There are other things to check but I'm happy to say that I don't think I have anything to worry about at all.

Moving on - Tonight is Wednesday and I worked out and ran a mile again this morning. Then God allowed me to do a ton of things today for many areas of business and JDRF.

Releasing control has been difficult because I don't have as rigid of a schedule as my personality is used to.  But being open to what God has in store is so much better!

Today is Friday morning and I have to go for blood tests.  Then I can come back to work and get started on my list of to-do's.  I have a plan of action and pray for focus.  If I stay focused today, tomorrow I get to go play at my friends house.  LOL

Can you release control to God?  He has so many wonderful things waiting for you!

Blessings and Peace,

The Busy Woman ~ Connecting With Others Has To Do With Time Management

Posted 10:27 PM, May. 21, 2007
Busy Woman's Daily Planner®This week was very difficult to find something to write about. It was a draining week with my grandchildren in the office going through different issues.  The day before the article was due, I struggled for something to write about.  I prayed and was filled with the Spirit to write.  But I didn't understand what I was writing about until about 2 pages into it.  I said to God, "But God, this isn't an article for my weekly post.  Please show me what you have me writing."  You see, I get so many interruptions in my office and at home, (I'm sure you can all relate) that too often while I'm on a roll, someone breaks my train of thought.  It is so frustrating.  So I took a break and asked the Lord to give me quite time when He and I are both ready to write.  A little while after I had about 10 or 15 more minutes and the Lord showed me that it was my testimonial I was writing.  WOW!  What a different way of writing it than I had written before.  But I still had a problem.  That wasn't something I was to post here.  I still needed something for my weekly post.  THEN, I got a call from both of my teens at different times... our Asian son was really moving in.  Let me take you back to the beginning. Almost 7 years ago, I put my kids back in public school. I homeschooled for 8 years and ran a daycare. We moved to Ventura, CA and I purchased The Busy Woman's Daily Planner®. It was a while after that we put the kids back into public school.

That is where my son met his best friend Binh. Binh is from Vietnam, moved to the US with his family many years ago, only to lose his father to cancer shortly after they arrived. Binh is a very well rounded, kind, and loving person.

My son Josh met Binh in middle school. Because he's the mellow, soft spoken personality type and Binh is the fun loving, sometimes hyper personality type, they got along very well.

They were in a large group of kids who hung out together often. By their senior year of high school, we had moved back to Thousand Oaks again but the group would let me drive out in my big van to pick them up and haul them to our home for the weekend. They were a wonderful and still quite normal group of teens.

At the end of their senior year everyone sort of went their own way but Binh and Josh. They still "hung" out together. When we moved back to Ventura, Binh and Josh started spending more time together, even dating girls that were close friends.

Josh has always wanted a brother and another male around the house since he's been surrounded by two sisters and me while his dad worked long hours. He called me today and told me that Binh was moving in for a little while.

CONNECTIONS!

It's always about connections. If you could see the smile on my son's face when he got home from school you'd know that this was a good connection. He is no longer in a house with mostly women in it and he has someone to take a quick ride to the store with, etc.

You see, from birth, people need to be connected to one another. And these boys had a connection that withstood moving and distance. It also helps that they are both easy going.

How does this pertain to Time Management & organizing you might ask? Our Motto: Making Time For What Matters Most; Family, Friends, FUN! How do you build relationships? Make time for them. If you plan your time (Time Management) and have an organized life (organizing), you will have more time for those things that matter most to you and for me that is people.

PS. Tonight when I got home from work, first Binh came home announcing through the door, "Family I'm home!!!"  He's 19.  LOL  Then my son came home and quietly waved and said hey.  LOL  About 20 minutes later, both boys were on the couch and Binh was teaching Josh how to solve a Rubiks Cube. Awwww, melt my heart.

The Busy Woman - Walking By Faith

Posted 1:42 AM, May. 12, 2007
The day-to-day walk in this life is sometimes smooth sailing and other times a rocky road (not my favorite flavor ice cream by the way "rocky" road.). But it's by faith we walk each day. Some days though I feel like a Jew wandering in the desert (yes I'm Jewish) as the children of Israel did in the Old Testament. They believed in God, they ate, they lived, and they kept walking. They were walking by faith. Then they got to another major setback or breaking point, they lost faith, and stopped walking, yet again.

Everything - possession of the land, victory over enemies, prosperity, enjoyment of life - depended on their obedience to God's Word.* Moses reviews their journey with them by going over their travels and reminding them of all the good that happened during their wanderings. We all know the story of how God sent down manna from heaven. Moses reminded them of this and told them they should never forget that it was God who gave them all their provisions and met all of their needs. But they still didn't trust that God was in control and wouldn't let them fall.

Isn't that how it is with us? We forget much of the blessings when we're going through the trials? Moses drove home the message that the Israelites should never forget it was God who supplied all their needs and provided their abundance.* It was very important to remember THIS in order to help them continue on the journey. We too need to remember the blessings and goodness we've tasted and focus on those things to the best of our ability in order to move forward in our walk with God and in life.

This concept is like The Secret that is in the media so much right now some might think it's new. But it's not. This same message has been in front of us all along. It's just that now it's on video, CD, and in book format, and therefore has been glamorized. It's not that it's a difficult concept to follow either. It's having the support system in place to help lift you up and remind you of the things you've been blessed with before. It's thinking of the positive things of the past and using that to march forward, hence, it emphasizes positive thinking.

It reminds me of John 15:7: "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you." God wants us to have abundance. Unfortunately it's our own mind that sabotages our prosperity.

The support system that used to get people through hard times like the depression era is lacking in our fast paced lifestyles. In the striving for a better life, one of the things that seems to suffer most (not always, not forever, but most often) is the relationships of those we love.

This is one of the major things that's burdening the hearts of Americans. Yes there are some still blessed with a solid support system. But for those who do not have one, life can get blue. It's easy for everyone to tell you to change your frame of mind and be positive, but unless you have others around you to nurture that and help get you back on track every time you get blue, it's very hard!

When you walk by faith, life is so sweet. The answer is in being a support system to others and focusing on the triumphs in your life. Do you remember a time when even though you prayed for one thing, something even better happened? That's God. That's walking by faith.

The Busy Woman ~ It's So Easy A Child Can Do It

Posted 3:06 AM, May. 4, 2007
Busy Woman's Daily Planner®Moms are such loving, nurturing souls that when it comes time to take care of the family in the area of cleaning and organizing, they tend to over-think things. There have been numerous articles & product suggestions for making your child's room simple and organized. However, when I see the pictures of the end result, to me it feels like the room is pretty for mom to look at but not as functional for the child as it could be. Children think differently than we do. While we can teach them everything we know, we also have to allow them to experiment and learn some things on their own. If they don't get to earn satisfaction from doing certain things themselves, they won't appreciate the learning and carry it through to their adulthood. And to be honest mom, children learn what they live. So if the rest of the house is neat, tidy, & organized, eventually your child will learn.

I'm living proof of this. Apparently I was the messiest kid alive until I moved out on my own. The organization skills I was taught while growing up kicked in and to the amazement of my parents, my home was spotless and organized! {smile} So think of these tips when reorganizing your child's bedroom and closet.

1. Get on your knees or lower to see at the eye level of your child.

2. With your child, sort all items that need a home. (Read our Compartmentalize to Organize article to help you.)

3. Put them all in piles to see what size container is needed for each category. (Make a list of sizes needed.)

4. Give your child visuals of the sizes needed by using things like string, file folders (these are great because they open up to a larger size). Take these with you as well as write down the sizes you think will work.

5. Go shopping and guide your child to and through the organizing products you feel are appropriate. (By allowing your child to have a say in what type of organizer is purchased and used, you're giving them some ownership. This can go a long way in helping your child to take responsibility in keeping things in their rightful place.)

6. Allow the child to do most of the organizing himself. (It will probably not be perfect unless you gave birth to a Type A Compulsive and they had someone in the house to model after.)

7. Encourage your child by praising the little triumphs and saying things like, "Oh mommy would love to help you with that," when they have trouble. It will take a few weeks, but you'll know if it's it worked or not by then.

In the meantime, learning comes best through trial and error. I heard that from a friend and learned that on my own as well. While the children are young, try to let them learn through the little things. That way, when the big things arrive, they are better prepared to handle them.

Busy Woman ~ Life Happens When Your Not Looking

Posted 2:23 AM, Apr. 27, 2007
The Busy Woman

I write the article for the Front Porch starting around Friday or Monday prior to the Friday it's due to go out so it's always fresh and new. This past week, I didn't feel particularly inspired and left it for Wednesday night when I knew I'd be alone with my thoughts.

Wednesday rolled around and I was setting myself up on the couch to write about family, life, peace, etc. when I heard my husband's work phone ring. Before I could go into the room, he was out telling me to get dressed. One of our friends from his work, 5 months pregnant was driving herself to the hospital.

Of course we dropped and ran if nothing more than to sit in her room as they monitored her and the baby. They are both doing fine. Dad stayed home with the two little ones and was happy when mom arrived home safely.

With the new world we live in, too many of us are rushing here and there trying to make a living and/or a difference in this world. Unfortunately we have so many obligations that it's usually our relationships that take a back seat. I'll be honest, I'm overworked right now as well. Things are growing and booming, so there are many details that need attention in this phase of the business.

But last night I didn't think twice about the article or anything else, other than getting to the hospital and praying for the well being of our friend and her baby. We got home past 12 midnight and I've been totally exhausted today. But I would do it all over again if need be, because that's what friends and family do.

Our solution in our own lives at The Busy Woman is to deep clean, purge, and reorganize the physical stuff, and stabilize instead of running full steam ahead. That used to be a blast, but as I get older and more people come to work, we have to slow down, work as a team in planning our objectives, and enjoy the journey. It's a process and a phase.

So my question to you as it was to my friend today is: Are you counting the costs of taking on yet one more thing because you'll make a little more money or get something out of it that you want, but at the expense of peace?

The Busy Woman ~ Successful Moving Strategies

Posted 1:32 AM, Apr. 21, 2007
The Busy Woman

Moving is a daunting task to say the least. Our family has moved way too many times if you ask me. Sometimes it went well and sometimes it did not. The ideal way to move is to have plenty of time to pack in a methodical manner. Let me first go over a list of to- do’s and then good moving experiences and not so good so you can see how we made it through when we had time or not.

1. Get plenty of boxes & packing tape ahead of time.

a. See if your local grocery store will be on alert that you’re in need. Find out what days you’ll need to stop by to pick them up. I got a LOT of boxes this way.

b. Post on www.freecycle.org in your local area for a need for boxes.

c. Ask neighbors to drop off decent boxes or tell them to call and you’ll pick them up.

d. A final resort is to purchase them from a large box company in bulk. It’s much less expensive than buying them from a moving store.

Box companies: www.uline.com - www.marfred.com There are many more so just do a search for moving boxes and compare prices. Most of these companies have tape in bulk too. I personally buy from www.uline.com .

2. Research moving companies We had a 20’ x 10’ storage unit we filled on the last move and for about $700 the movers were able to empty about 2/3 of the storage unit and all of the heavy furniture in the house. It was invaluable because we could not physically move everything.

3. Purchase:

a. A few thick sharpies

b. A full size pad of lined paper

c. Large Avery shipping labels or half sheet labels.

Good Moving Experience

When we moved the first time I had everything labeled and on a sheet of lined paper. Everyone was assigned a room number. (Those room numbers were put on each door or wall of a room such as the living room at the receiving end.) The room number plus everything in the box (within reason) was also written on the sheet and the label. If there were many similar items I put a category instead of a list of what was inside. Label at least two sides of the boxes, top and side. If you’re up to it, label 3 or 4 sides to make things a lot easier during the unpacking phase.

One room at a time was my motto. We each started with our own room. Anything that wasn’t needed for a month or longer was packed. The kids were wonderful about choosing a lot of games and toys they could live without for a few months. We agreed to have a sort of toy unpacking party when those items finally found homes in the new house.

It was wonderful to be able to take our time to pack. About 4 – 6 boxes were packed on average per day because I home schooled and the children were young enough that we had a great routine. This became part of our temporary routine. Some days we did VERY well and packed 8 – 10 boxes. Some days we only got 2 or 3 boxes packed. But for the most part, we were well equipped and finished on time.

Unfortunate Moving Experience

Our last move was interesting. From the time we put the house on the market to the acceptance of an offer was only two weeks. (Unheard of in the 2006 real estate market.) Then the buyers wanted a short escrow. That meant power packing. When you have to power pack, things don’t always go as planned. There really isn’t much time “to” plan. Not only were we power packing, but - I was no longer a stay at home mom with hours during the day to do much of the work. This meant I had to leave some of the packing up to the teenagers. Over the phone I did my best to carefully explain to my 16 yr old the intricacies of packing dishes and glasses. One night I remember bringing home more boxes and packing material. We sat in front of a movie as I taught her about packing and just chatted a bit.

This move did not allow for much of a staging area or time to organize as we would have otherwise. We quickly rented a large dumpster and listed anything we didn’t use in a long time or no longer wanted, on freecycle. We got rid of 2 large dumpsters full of junk and over 18 appliances. Many of them were almost new. It actually felt great to give things to others who could use it. After a week or so we realized we just weren’t going to make it if we didn’t come up with a strategy. That’s when we rented a storage unit. My son, husband, or I made runs to the unit every night with as many boxes as we could fit in our vehicles.

On the weekends we packed like crazy and filled the storage unit. I ended up calling a moving company to help with the heavy things on moving day. It was the most valuable money spent because they were quick, careful, and thorough. Unfortunately because it was such a quick move, everyone just slammed boxes as fast as they could into the garage of the new place. It’s been months and we’re still digging things out.

Learning to purge before you’re faced with moving is my best suggestion. Keeping things because you might need them later means you have many things you’ll probably never use later but have stored for a long time. This is how we end up with so much clutter. If you need something you got rid of, buy it again later. Otherwise, ask a family member or post a want on www.freecyle.org in your local area. You’ll save so much time not having to move things you don’t use from home to home.

And I have to put a shameless plus for The Busy Woman's Daily Planner® - I could NOT have done it without my planner. I set up a contact page for each utility I had to shut off and have turned on. Then I had specific note pages for new homes we were looking for. Everything was put behind my moving tab.

The Busy Woman ~ What To Do With Cards - Sent & Received Part 2

Posted 2:58 AM, Apr. 13, 2007

There are so many fun things you can do with cards you receive from others. I thought I’d gather up as many ideas from others and put it into this article.

Susie of www.thebusywoman.com writes:  I have an envelope with all of the beautiful notes from my husband before we were married and even some from after we were married.  I used to take the front cover (if there was no writing on the back) and do the post card idea one of the ladies mentions below.  I also used to cut out pretty pictures from the cards and glue them onto a new card.  At the end of the holidays, I’ll gather all the cards sent to me and write down anyone who is not already in my card list book, then cut out pretty pictures from the cards and put them in a zip lock bag for next year.

Kelly McCausey of KellyMcCausey.com keeps her received cards in a gorgeous keepsakes box for when she has time to put it into a book.

Margaret Ropp from www.getafreegreetingcard.biz writes:  Cards that I don’t want to save... I cut off the front with the picture and recycle.
If the card front doesn’t have writing on the back side, I use them for Post Cards ;o)
I’ve also framed real pretty ones and enjoyed them as framed “art.”

Jo Ann Hakola from The Book Faerie www.bookfaerie.com writes:  I put them on the bulletin board in my “mail” room for a few weeks.  Then I clip the interesting pictures/graphics and recycle them by making cards of my own.

Those that are from close family members go in a “memory box” to be kept for all time...  I still have cards I got as a child from Grandma and Grandpa, and they still make me smile and feel loved.

Debbie Emery from www.misbeehavenbanners.com I always save my cards.  But I do know people who use them to create scrap-booking items and cards etc.  They cut up parts of the cards for them.

Sandi from http://williamss11.agelesscatalog.com writes:  We usually put our cards on our mantel and they stay there for a month for all to enjoy!  Then I take them down, add them to the pile for the year, tie them with a ribbon and put them in a decorated box with the year on it!

Cindy P from Noah's Ark Collectors Workshop! writes: I keep all cards for awhile, then put the ones that mean a lot to me in with my pictures and even years later I still can't throw them out. The others I sort to those who need a note back and eventually throw those and the others out. The cards are so pretty I hate to throw them away. At one time I knew how to make a box out of them but have since lost the directions. Also some nursing homes/retirement centers will take the cards for their residents to make things out of them.

The most popular tip was to put your cards into a box.  One woman stated that she puts her holiday cards in her holiday decorations box and cards from family into another box.

On a side note, yesterday I saw some gorgeous Mother’s Day cards at Starbucks!  I bought one for my mother and one for my mother-in-law.  The kicker is that they were $3.95 each!  So signing up for a service or buying in bulk is a much better option.

The Busy Woman ~ What to do about note cards – sending & receiving, part 1

Posted 1:55 PM, Apr. 6, 2007
This week is about sending cards:
I was speaking to my friend Kelly McCausey about sending and receiving cards and we had so many thoughts I just had to share. Here is a list of things we discussed:
1. Buy cards at the store in bulk.
2. Buy cards as special occasions come up.
3. Make cards.
4. Send cards online, i.e.: e-cards.
5. Use a service such as, “Send Out Cards.”

When I’ve purchased bulk cards, there are usually many that don’t fit who I wish to send cards to, leaving wasted cards sitting in the box for years. Can you tell I’ve had experience with this? {wink} On the other hand when I purchase cards, as I need them, I often cut it close to the time they should be delivered. I don’t like that feeling at all.

Kelly on the other hand likes real cards she can choose from at the store. She likes writing out the notes, addressing and mailing them on her own. Kelly sends out 2 – 3 cards per week and told me she just can’t fall in love with the idea of automating the process. She said, “Two days ago my friend and I went to Hallmark. I picked out three cool cards. One was soooo perfect for my co-host this month - I mean hilariously perfect! Nothing replaces the idea that I personally went to the store and picked out a card, hand wrote it and went to the post office - all the time thinking of my friend.”

Having all I need on hand to make cards for the right occasions was “my” favorite thing. I used to put a lot of time and energy into making and sending cards. However now that my time is at a minimum, I need a new solution. I’ve sent cards online, and it’s a toss up as to how they will be received. Some days I love getting them and some days I don’t feel like the person put much effort or care into it. If I know my friend is having a bad day, an e-card is great to send at a moments notice. Although, sometimes I get lost in the searching for just the right card thereby using valuable time on this task. Then it becomes a time waster. So if you choose this option, find a site with cards you like and try to find one quickly rather than surfing for a long time.

Kelly & I have both checked out a company called, “Send Out Cards.” They send out cards for you with many options. This is a great way for those who have little time available to them such as busy business owners or people with extremely large families who also work full time. You can spend a few hours setting up an account, putting in everyone’s information, and typing out the cards to send all in advance. This is an ingenious program and I don’t receive a dime for sharing this information with you. So let me give you a few more details.

1. Cards are approximately $1 give or take.
2. You can upload graphics to add to your card as well or choose from the many pictures and graphics they have to offer.
3. You also get a special handwriting form to fill out putting all the letters, numbers, and special characters in your own writing. Then you mail it back to them and they upload it to your account.
4. You can set up to send one card at a time or set up many cards in advance to send on a specific date.
5. If you have a business, you can set up group mailings to send to your customers or if in direct sales, your down-line.
6. In addition, it includes reminders for any occasions you input into the system. I love this idea!

When it comes right down to it, we both love sending our own cards or for me, hand making cards to send out. At one point I would like to take the time to set up a send out cards account and automate things. I think it would tremendously boost my business. But for now I have to settle for buying cards throughout the year as I see ones that suit special occasions.

The Busy Woman ~ Personality Based Time Management

Posted 1:43 AM, Mar. 23, 2007

Homeschooling moms can use Personality Based Time Management© to help them with their family.  When you learn how to define your child's personality, it makes it easier to know when they will willingly work on chores or schoolwork and when they need time alone.  (The same goes for your husband; once you learn if he's the type that likes to play with the kids when he gets home or needs a hot meal first, it will make your relationship better.)  And since the original Personality Based Time Managment© E-Book is 19 pages or so, I thought this would be a good start that's short, sweet, and to the point.  Our original book is about Personality Based Time Managment© as it pertains to women, but watch for our new E-Book coming this summer on Personality Based Time Management as it pertains to kids!

We can simplify the aspect of Personality Based Time Management© or many personality assessments for that matter by using just a couple of variables. Now of course people are much more complex than this. But in this instant gratification generation, information such as this is fun, easy to read and doesn't take an hour to take a test.

Start with just two variables:

1. Are you a people person or no?

2. Are you organized or disorganized?

A people person gets energized by people. They find refreshment in going out to a crowded place or chatting for a bit with a friend. They tend not to thrive on quiet environments in general. Someone who is not a people person does not want to be around people when they need to get energized. Their energy comes from having the calm, quiet environment; ie: reading a book, taking a nap, resting their mind during this time.

For homeschooling families, if you have a child who is a people person, then putting him or her in a quiet setting could hurt his or her concentration.  This Type B child needs at least a little background music or others working in the room so it's not so quiet.  They can thrive in a somewhat unstructured environment as they get bored easily.  But some structure is needed for all people.  So try not to fly by the seat of your pants during the day.  The Type A child on the other hand likes the quiet, as this personality needs the structure and calm environment.

I'm a people person and it shocks others when I appear exhausted at the end of the day, yet get energized after a few minutes into my time with them. What many of them don't know is that I become more fatigued from being alone in front of the computer or alone in my office, than from working with people all day. Of course there's a balance and I LOVE that balance of 2/3 of the day with people, the other 1/3 without.   So can you imagine how a Type B child who is homeschooled would thrive on field trips, group projects, or other projects that would have them share with others?

Noticing how you or the kids feel during alone time or with people can help all of you learn when to remove yourself or the kids from a setting, or put yourself or the kids into one.

The Type A typically likes more solitude than the Type B. That's why the Type A child tends to appear more together than the Type B child. However, that doesn't mean that the Type A does not like to spend time with others. To me it means that their brain needs some rest to process all that's been going on.  They also like to keep their lessons in order and finish schoolwork before they take a break.  Don't be surprised if these kids have an organized list in their notebook of what needs to be done next.

The Type B typically will forgo finishing schoolwork if it's time for a break.  They like to get up and out to have fun with friends.  If no one is around the Type B child might get to some schoolwork, then either start daydreaming or wander off to find something to do where others are present. Type B's have a hard time completing work because, they procrastinate, daydream, or get overwhelmed easily.  I found with my 3 children, my type b's had a difficult time comprehending actual time.  That's why I went over time incriments and wrote about it in my article below called, "Dealing With Time From A Different Perspective."

An organized person thinks logically and is often able to organize with ease. This is typically (but not set in stone) the description of Type A people. Organizing comes naturally to them because their brain functions in a very logical manner. They can see how things should be organized whether it be schoolwork or cleaning their bedroom, just by looking at the space or work needed to be done, (which frankly used to drain my brain until I learned how to do the same thing. Organizing can be learned.).

Type A children are not naturally disorganized but can become that way if they are overwhelmed.  If they are the Type A perfectionist child then they tend to overwhelm themselves with trying to make things just right.  So mom, watch for the compulsive tendencies in your child to help them learn to lighten up, otherwise, they turn into adult heart patients.

Disorganized kids usually have too much on their plate or have not been taught "how to" organize. Therefore tasks of organizing or keeping on top of their schoolwork are daunting at best.  I've written an article on my website about learning to clean and organize my room called, "Chores Have Purpose."   But when it came to schoolwork, my parents (while being very well-meaning) did a lot of my work for me.  I could not comprehend time as it actually was.  Almost all tasks seemed so overwhelming that my parents either did their best to show me or if they couldn't figure out how to show me, they did the work for me to help me "feel" better.  Well now that I look back I see that I learned how to manipulate them into doing most of my work for me.  I can remember one time my mom read most of a Nancy Drew book to me over a weekend to help me finish in time to do a report.  She had me read a chapter and would show me how many pages I had to get through before she'd come in and read to me.  If I whined enough, she'd finish that chapter and go onto the next.  (Although I must admit that once I saw how an entire book like that could be read in less than two days off and on, I started to read a lot more.)

Here's a list of ideas that might help. Have your children:

A. Start with an easy task first.

B. Complete it and then choose a more difficult task.

Remember that giving only a couple of choices lessens confusion.

C. Complete the difficult task and start on another easy task again.

Then show your child how far they've gotten. See if that helps them get going.

D. Help them figure out what they can do on their own.

E. Enlist one of their Type A friends to help with some of their projects.

F. Reward them for what they've accomplished.

G. Learn their moods and what makes them feel good or bad.

And Finally...

H. Try to have kids over who lift your kids up, not tear them down. Nice kids are very important in your child's life.

The Busy Woman ~ Dealing With Time From A Different Perspective

Posted 2:38 AM, Mar. 9, 2007

I was going over our schedule with my two younger children, when "it" started! I had a light bulb moment and oh what a moment. Let me show you the discussion…

Child: “It's too hard!"
"It takes too long!"
"I can't do it."
"I won't have any time left to play!"

Mom: "Ah HA! So that's the problem."
"If I prove to you that you'll have plenty of time to play, will that make you feel better?"

Child: "What? HOW?! Whine whine whine… How are you going to prove it to me?"

Mom: "There are 288 Five minute increments in one 24 hour day."
"That means you have a LOT of time to get things done. Here's how."
"How long do you think it takes you to empty the dishwasher?"
"I'm going to time you for each chore today so you can see how much time you have left to play when you DON'T spend your play time whining about your chores."

Believe it or not, the kids and I had a good time seeing just how long each chore took. Here's a semi list...
Emptying the dishwasher - approx. 5 minutes
Loading the dishwasher - approx. 7 minutes (if there were a ton of dishes) Now this could go down if the kids keep up on the dishes.
Emptying all of the small trash cans and putting in new bags - 4 minutes
Picking up after the animal - approx. 5 minutes

I will get to the adult part of this article in a moment, but let me share with you how it ended with the children.

Mom: "So you see kids, if you would just buckle down and do your chores, you'd have over 250 Five minute increments left to play."

Child: "But moooom, I do have to sleep ya know. So sleeping takes up MORE of my time."

Mom: "Oh, you're right. Let's see how many Five minute increments you're using when you sleep."
"If you sleep 8 hours, you'll use 96 Five minute increments."
"You will still have 192 Five minute increments."

Now the reality of all children understanding reason is not probable, but it's a good start in teaching them how to effectively manage their time.

With all this in mind, let's see if we can apply this to our often hectic and overwhelming days...

How many tasks can you think of that only take about Five minutes? See if you can list them for each day, week or month. Then attempt to insert those short tasks into your schedule. If you don't have a schedule, then at least grab a sheet of paper to start writing down the Five-minute tasks. In doing this you can count how many Five minute increments you'll need to complete everything and start from there.

It's all in your perspective. If you see a lot of tiny tasks it can be overwhelming. But when you know you have about 192 Five-minute increments in your entire day, you can insert small tasks and then insert the larger ones such as making dinner. I know this may sound TOO organized. But once you try it and succeed, you'll cherish YOUR playtime and be happy you tried.

the Busy Woman ~ Joys Of Being An Organized Mom

Posted 4:15 AM, Feb. 23, 2007

In 1992 or so, I had to make a decision. I was running a daycare out of my home and had a direct sales business. My oldest child was in public school and things were looking grim for her. The school did not treat advanced children well. So my husband and I made the decision to take her out and home school.

I was organized, but now it was imperative that the whole family get even more organized so I could be an effective teacher while running a day care and my little direct sales biz out of the house at night. With God and a wonderful husband I was able to take 3 weeks off while we got the house ready for all that would be happening inside. I explained to my young children what we were doing and as a family we got ready to home school by cleaning out everything we no longer needed, putting things in proper and permanent places and learning what type of schedule worked best for each of us.

I used an empty scheduling template and printed out 10 copies. Here's a link to the PDF Blank Schedule. I put a child’s name at the top of each one and each night I’d map out the next day. I even did one for myself. Each day I’d change things around that did not work and leave things that did. I had 3 children of my own 2, 4, and almost 7, then several day care children who came in and out at different hours on different days. Here's a PDF of our sample Full Daily Schedule

So picture stopping in the middle of whatever it is you’re doing because you notice that a particular thing is not working. I would say to the kids, “Okay, guys, this is not working. Let’s regroup.” I’d go over what I thought was not working and ask the 4 yr old about it or the 7 yr old and we’d actually discuss things. They loved having a say and being respected.

After a little less than the 3 weeks, we were like a well-oiled machine. I was fortunate enough to be able to plan 6 months in advance for most things, such as field trips, days off, & vacations with the family, which is such a blessing! Here is one of our last type of schedule from when my youngest was old enough to be able to handle the after school routines but still needed the school time routine set before her. Simple Daily Schedule I think this made all three children feel better to see it. And we had such a joyful time while homeschooling, that the kids will never forget it.

If you’re a type A personality, getting into a routine and scheduling come naturally or is at minimum easier for you than the type B personality. So let’s give the type B woman some time here. There are several ways to organize with the type B mindset.

A. Have a Type A come and help. She’ll do most of it for you and it will be done THAT DAY! (Okay, so it might not be done “that day” but it certainly will be leaps and bounds ahead of where it was.)

B. Do as much as you can in 5, 10, or 15-minute increments. This helps you get revved up and keep going. If you truly don’t have the time, then it also serves as a means in giving you permission to stop.

Let me get into some detail to help you visualize. I’m a “learned type A”. My father was a type A and therefore I learned by experiencing. My father physically taught me how. When my bedroom would get out of control, he’d come in and take everything that was out of place and put it in a pile in the center of the floor. He’d have me put away everything I could and then I was to get him. He’d come to my room, help me a little, and then leave me to work some more. By doing this I learned how to view the room the way it “should” be and then put the out of place things where they belong. If you can do that for each room of your home, one room at a time, you’ll gain instant gratification as well as have the ability to go through the out of place items one at a time.

C. Multitask by visualizing your home as it is at the time you plan on cleaning and set out a path in your head: for example, I start in the kitchen collecting anything that does not belong. I stop in the laundry room along the way to put up a load, then put away the things I collected in the kitchen before returning back to the kitchen, etc. I start by putting all dirty dishes in the dishwasher and get that started. Then I clear off the counters, spray and wipe down everything I can before putting things where they belong. I put up a pot of coffee and go back to the laundry room to put the wash to the dryer. After this I’m ready to start my workday in the home office.

There “can” be benefits to doing things this way. If you get on a roll like I do, it gets my heart rate up while accomplishing all the housework. By working on things this way each morning, you can move onto the next level of cleaning a little at a time, each day. For me, that meant more time on the weekends with the family.

Of course there are the times when I turn into a type A and plan out my deep cleaning on a weekend. Then I gather all cleaning supplies for the area I’m starting on. I go from top to bottom in that one area before taking a break. However, the type B in me needs to visualize the time of day I’d like to be done so I’ll still have time to rest or go out.

Many type B women do what we call, Piggybacking tasks so that they feel they are accomplishing more in less time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If the type B woman can train themself to do the visualization of the house and what needs to be done, they can map out their piggybacking of tasks and get the job done.

What type are you?

The Busy Woman ~ Make a New Life Resolution This Year

Posted 2:09 AM, Jan. 29, 2007

Get Organized in 2007 with These Top 5 Organizing Tips

What is the one resolution that tops most lists every year? Yes, many wish for that extra weight loss and better health, but what most long for is more time with their family & friends. Time to enjoy life and connect with those they love the most. Quality time not spent doing or achieving, but loving and believing. What’s the best way to get this extra time? Simple, organizing your life, every aspect of it from your business to your home, to your car, to even the purse you carry. Spend less time searching and more time enjoying. This is especially true for homeschooling families.

If you're a busy woman you MUST stay organized and on top of every little detail in your day. You must learn to prioritize, take time to plan your day in advance, and schedule in free time. We based our entire Busy Woman line of products on enabling you to do just that. Now who of you here at homeschoolblogger.com are not busy? The general public has NO idea how busy yet productive the average homeschool family is.

Here are my top 5 organizing tips for 2007:

1) Find the Right Daily Planner – Look for one that is right for you and your busy schedule and use it religiously. Keep it with you! Everyone has different personalities and different tasks to accomplish so personalize it according to your needs. Always have your planner easily accessible. For example, keep it open on the passenger’s seat while driving and on a central counter or table at home.

2) Learn How To Use Your Planner for Best Results - There are many ways to schedule and plan in a daily planner. But because your brain functions in a rational order and focuses on the first appointment it sees, you should write things down in time order. Other planners have you schedule according to person, which makes you search for the first appointment of the day.

3) Schedule the Night Before - Block your time on your daily planner pages the night before. This will keep you from feeling hurried while writing out your schedule during the morning rush. Giving yourself the opportunity to plan your day in a focused, calm environment, without pressure will help you stay on target. Also, consider putting your planner on your nightstand in the evening. That way as things come to you during the night, you can easily write them down.

4) Schedule Travel Time - As homeschool moms, we have a lot to deal with. So if we don't learn to leave earlier than we need to, chances are someone is going to need to go to the bathroom "one more time" or one of the kids will have forgotten to grab something. And if you're a homeschool family with a lot of children, this could go on for 15 minutes. Schedule your trips and don’t forget to schedule the time needed to gather all the important items that must go with you. Jot down those items in your daily planner. Then remember to check your planner right before you leave.

5) Use the right tools – Look throughout your home and office and locate areas that need to be organized. With the right tools, you can easily organize your office, living room (no more looking for the remote), kid’s room, bathroom, car, etc. Look to The Busy Woman website to fulfill all your organizing needs.

This year, you can keep those resolutions. Stop by The Busy Woman website to find tips and articles, as well as a complete selection of daily planners and organizing tools. See how with the right tools, you can do it all.

The Busy Woman ~ Will Your Business Survive?

Posted 2:26 AM, Jan. 12, 2007
For most businesses December is the busiest time of year. But for many smaller businesses, it’s the time of year for burnout and bills. Did you plan ahead for this season or were you too focused on the now -- all year? Something small business owners tend to do is to live in the here and now. I used to until I was featured in some magazines and they taught me about pre-planning.

I’m already working on plans for 10 months from now, are you? You see, looking at your small business as a “business” has to be learned. Whether you learn it from life experience (which I do not recommend) or learn in school or in your research, be open to what others say and the endless possibilities. Be ready to change your thoughts and plans on a dime if something comes up that’s a win-win situation and falls in line with your passion.

Keep plugging away the last few weeks of each year, but also take time to plan for your next 10 months or ideally for the next 12 months! If you don’t see future vision for your business, then how will you plan ahead for success?

Thought provoking I know. It’s meant to be so that you “plan” and prepare for greatness!

The Busy Woman ~ What are you going to do differently this year?

Posted 2:19 AM, Jan. 5, 2007

Here we are! It's 2007 and as usual, there are a LOT of writings about New Years Resolutions and dieting. It's the same every year. The only difference is YOU. Every year many people are set on doing it right “this” year. New Years for most is like a "do over". But unless you have the determination and dedication, it's going to be the same this year as it was the last.

I get a LOT of sales this time of year by well meaning people trying to do it right. Starting fresh and new each year gives people hope. For the most part with our training, support group, articles and consulting, the ladies seem to get a handle on things and feel better. But part of our consulting talks about regrouping throughout the year, not just once a year.

Seasons change and so do we. That's why we constantly need to reassess our phase of life. Take a weekend off to rearrange and organize. I’ve become the purge queen because of the reassessing of my life. And it feels oh so sweet! During each season for example, we wear different clothes. In the winter we wear cold weather clothing and stay inside more often. This requires us to have our warm weather clothing readily available as opposed to summer clothes. While your changing out your clothing, why not try to get rid of some things you didn’t wear the previous season. Why pack it away when you’re not going to use it the next time?

During the summer, we wear lighter clothing and swim suits. Towels might get a workout depending upon what part of the country you're in. So there's probably more laundry, which means more time needed to put up the wash. Why not purge through the old towels? Put the ones from the house that you don’t want for the family into the garage to use for washing the car or cleaning outside, and any of the garage towels that are trashy into the trash.

Fall is back to school time and everyone goes shopping for neat, new school supplies and of course, new clothes. How about having a family clean out day to make room for all of the new items? After all, just how many old binders, tiny pencils, or half used notebooks of paper do you need sitting around?

Each of these phases or seasons is a time where we should regroup - reassess the needs of the family during that season. I remember when I was little, my parents would plan one day for us to swap out clothing, (not that we need to change much of what we wear in California). Dad would take me to the nursery to change out the seasonal plants too. It’s such a sweet memory.

So are things different for you this year? What are you going to do to change it? What are you going to do differently this year?

The Busy Woman ~ Susie's Ramblings

Posted 1:27 AM, Dec. 15, 2006
I want you to have a happy, healthy, and most wonderful holiday season. So make a quick list of the things that make you happy during the holiday season. What is realistic and what is not? I'm taking a day here and a day there to play with the kids, the GRANDkids that is. I'm going away with my husband. And I'm working on setting up a date with my mom and dad.

How many people do you know who are suffering from a chronic illness, inability to leave their home, or maybe just a flu bug? This time of year is either really fun for some or really sad for others. How do you want it to be for you?

One of my joys is visiting the elderly and asking them about their life. Have you ever seen the face of someone who got a visit from someone who just wanted to sit and hear all about them? When my children were young they used to make cards for shut ins and people in the senior home. Have you seen the face of someone who hasn't received a card in years? I have and it makes me get all warm and fuzzy inside. {smile}

Taking a special day to decorate can be fun. Or baking cookies is almost always an enjoyable time, especially with kids. The key here is to plan a day now and again before the main holiday... to have down time, mind rest, and time with your friends, family members, and "yourself".

I'd love to know your favorite, fun thing to do for the holidays. Maybe we can get a list for our next issue. Email Susie: susie@thebusywoman.com
