Postponed Rosa Discussion and New Read

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

To all Readers Lurkers~
We will be posting Discussion of Chapters 14-17 of Rosa of Linden Castle on Thursday. Tomorrow is Isaac's fifth birthday, and I am not prepared to discuss tomorrow. Hopefully I will be on Thursday!! Pray for us as we are readying to publish GGM for August 1st!

Enoch Roden's Training - Lamplighter If you are interested in reading along with us next time and adding to our discussion, we will be reading  Enoch Roden's Training by Hesba Stretton - Lamplighter. We are letting you know early so you have time to purchase it and join in with us!!

Here is a little more about the book, from The Old Schoolhouse Store:
"This book is bursting with life's lessons! As Enoch's faith is tested, will he prove that his is no mere profession, but a real, living confidence in God's love and wisdom? Through severe trials, Enoch learns much about sound business principles, sacrifice, and trusting God. If he had only said, "I am working with God…" he would never have found the work wearisome, for of all grand, and comforting, and heart-refreshing thoughts in this world, to a Christian, the greatest is the thought that we are co-workers with God. Without a doubt, after reading this book, you'll walk away a better person than when you began."

We hope that you will join us, and those of you reading along with us in Rosa will pop in and just say hello!!

Blessings!!

New Book Coming: Suggested List

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

Hello there! Well, can you believe it? We have one short story left in this little treasure! The Forget-Me-Not is the last story in The Inheritance. Though it was a surprise that the book was broken into several different stories, it has been a wonderful read.

Now we need to choose another book. We already have a couple in mind, but I want to get a list going of Lamplighter books you would like to read. To see the selection, please go to The Old Schoolhouse Store. You can look at their selection of Lamplighter books or through their selection of other books, and leave a comment of future choice reads. Also, if you have criteria that is important to you, like a shorter book of less than 100 pages versus a longer book of 200+ pages, let us know. This will also affect the cost of the book, and if that is something you consider, let us know that too. We are assuming the content of the book has been acceptable!
We are not going to post our discussion for The Forget-Me-Not this week, but, rather, next week.
We will be announcing the next read by this Wednesday, and this will give you time to read over the past discussions if you didn’t get to tell us what you thought about The Inheritance or Clara. It is fine to go back and re-comment on everyone’s discussions. In fact, I would encourage it!
Blessings~

Some Books of Interest:

Rosa of Linden Castle - Lamplighter
In this unique von Schmid classic, a daughter's love for her imprisoned father ensures us that though it was meant for evil, God always intends it for good. Through difficult trials, Rosa learns what it means to truly love her enemies and to wait for the Lord's perfect timing.
Author: Christoph von Schmid
Written in: 1845
Pages: 163
Best for: Girls, Late Elementary - Adult

Jill's Red Bag - Lamplighter

This delightful story may be Amy LeFeuvre’s best work of all! Jill’s Red Bag has a gentle way of elbow-jabbing even the most mature reader! Jill heartily demonstrates the importance of sacrificial giving and the great reward it brings. Her focused determination and enthusiasm are contagious! Jack reveals how selfishness is truly blind to the needs of others. Most of all, Bumps provides enough laughter to heal the bones of anyone whose spirit has been dried or broken. It has been a while since I have laughed so heartily!
Author: Amy LeFeuvre
Written in: 1903
Pages: 224

That Printer of Udell's - Lamplighter
Has someone crossed your path recently that might have needed your help? Were you paying attention closely enough to have noticed? This wonderful book from Harold Bell Wright is just as alive and relevant in this century as it was to those to whom he was writing over 100 years ago. That tramp printer that ends up working for George Udell has so much to teach us about living by an honor code. According to President Ronald Reagan, “That Printer of Udell’s, had an impact I shall always remember… The term “role model” was not a familiar term in that time and place. But I realize I found a role model in that traveling printer whom Harold Bell Wright had brought to life. He set me on a course I’ve tried to follow even unto this day. I shall always be grateful.”

The Many Stories in The Inheritance

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

It pays to do what you first think to do.... I was going to initially divide up our reading schedule when I got The Inheritance, but things have been a bit hard around here lately with losing our beloved Grandmother and Matt flying to NM for the funeral, and I didn't. I see that I spoke too quickly when I said there was plenty of time to join us in reading The Inheritance! In reading chapters 4-6 and discussing it today, we have finished the story! It was brought up in the last discussion that finding the treasure was the climax, and we were already to it; well, now we know why. Sorry for dropping the ball there!

The next story in the book The Inheritance is Clara. It has 10 chapters, so we will start with chapters 1-5. We will read the rest of that story, chapters 6-10 the following week, as all of the chapters are short. Then, there is another story at the end of the book. So, really, if you have not read The Inheritance yet, we still have 3 more weeks of reading, please do join us!

We will be posting a Chapters 4-6 post, so please don't post your discussion yet here.  :) Thanks!

Book Discussion

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

Ok. I guess with all of the Thanksgiving celebrations, we didn't get much discussion done here last week.  Amanda and I posted our thoughts, as did Stephanie and Jeannie, and we would love to hear from the rest of you what you think about the first 3 chapters... Was the suspense of what would happen next just too much? Did you need to just read on?
Amanda asked me if we should discuss one or 2 chapters at a time, but I wasn't sure how that would go with everyone. That is so few pages a week, but the chapters are quite rich. What say you? I know some of you are waiting on your books, but many of you already had it.
I am sorry I didn't have time to get any extra information on this past week. We are working with one desktop pc between 4 of us who use the computer. I also am going to get the questions for family discussion on, but maybe tomorrow!

Blessings!

Wednesday, November 28, 2007 - 1 or 2 chapters...

Posted by srostollan

I think 1 to 2 chapters at a time would be fine. During this holiday season, it might make it easier to get done. Maybe for posts from the group. When are we reading the next installment for? It isn't today is it????!!!

I agree 1-2 chapter discussions during this time of holidays and what nots would be a great idea, and I think it will help those that are still waiting for their books to play catch up once they arrive, so they dont feel totally left out from where we are.

An Introduction and Sign-Up

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

Hello, anybody out there?

I feel like I'm standing at a mic in a bright light, and I just can't see anyone, not even in the front row.  We have had several orders come in for next read, The Hedge of Thorns, but not too many of you have let me know you will be joining us. So, who's in? Oh, I see Sylvia out there... Did you get your copy of this little treasure, Sylvia?

Let Me Introduce Myself

Maybe you just don't know me; Let me introduce myself. I promise I won't bite. I am Jacque Dixon. I blog here regularly at Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths. Matt and I have been homeschooling our children basically since Amanda was born. That was 8 children ago. We are now living in a small town in IN on a little farm, raising them and their animals, which at this time includes horses, goats, chickens and a couple of dogs... you know, homeschooling.

I also love to read books, though I rarely find the time to do it other than the usual Homeschool Teacher's Resource manual - Do I need to get out more? The last time I read a fiction book was.... oh yes, when we read The Hobbit together as a family a few years ago. That was fabulous fun! I think I may be enjoying this little treaure by myself to start, tho, then reading it to our Littles. Our oldest daughters: 18, 16 and 14, can read along with all of us though!

And Amanda, too

You probably already know Amanda. She is my bright, insightful 18- year-old daughter. I will give you my little intro, but I am going to let her introduce herself then too. She is a bright star in my crown. I do not take the credit for what a lovely young lady she is becoming, but I  am blessed by her. She is in her last year of high school and an incredible young woman in her own right. She is thoughtful, witty and kind. She loves to read - and has more time to than I do.

She read Ishmael, the first HSB LitClub book in 1 day. She loved it. She loves classical books, so I have a feeling you will definitely be hearing a lot more from her once we get started on The Hedge of Thorns!

Get Yours and Join Us!

Speaking of which, have you received your copy of  The Hedge of Thorns yet? I got mine just this last week.  I sat down a couple of times to look through it.  My copy is from Lamplighter, through The Old Schoolhouse Store. It is really a pretty book. It is hardcover, and I look forward to having it and sharing it with our children and grandchildren through the years.

You will notice that The Hedge of Thorns is not the 350-500-page book that Ishmael and Self-Raised are. This means that we will be getting through this one in just a couple of weeks. I will have an exact starting date for you soon, and we will get you the next title to order soon thereafter.

If you are planning to join us, let's try something new. Please sign your name to Mr. Linky below, and leave a comment if you like. It is not a requirement, but it will be a quick at-a-glance for everyone to see who all is joining us.  And, like I said, I don't bite; I promise.

Blessings!

I have been watching to see what was coming up and missed it!! Am I too late? How does this work? Do I just read and then comment or do I read along in assignments? I got this book over the summer at a homeschool conference that Lamplighter was at. I read half of it and stopped because I decided I wanted to read it with the children. I am ready to read it again!!!

Coming Soon!! The Hedge of Thorns!

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

The Hedge of Thorns - Lamplighter Hello! We will be starting back up again very soon!  This time we will be reading The Hedge of Thorns by John Hatchard.  This classic book was written in 1819 and is based on a true story of a young boy who learns the hard way that the choices we make can harm those we love the most. Because he desperately wants to know what is on the other side of a hedge of thorns, he puts his little sister in great danger. From his experience, we learn that God places boundaries in our lives because He loves us.

Whether you are a new blogger or a veteran to the Club, we can't wait to see what this next book will bring, so be sure to get yours and be looking for further updates coming soon!
A big thank you to Kate for leading the Self-Raised discussion! Thank you Kate!
Blessings!
and
Amanda

Saying Goodbye...for now

Posted in Literary Club Announcements

It looks like our club, under my management anyway, has run its course. :+) I was very blessed to be a part of this. I know that we read too fast for some of you and not nearly fast enough for others. Oh well. It is hard to have a book club online where it meets all the needs of those involved and does not take up too much time when our primary job is really to homeschool. :+)

I hope you enjoy the rest of the book - for those of you who have not finised it yet. I imagine that most of you have. I had long-ago finished it, but would read back over the chapters so we could discuss it. It would be great to hear from any of you who did. What did you think of it? I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was very different than Ishmael, and a lot more dramatic, but I loved the way it ended. For those of you who have not finished it, I will not spoil anything by detailing it here. When you do finish it, please do comment. I read them all.

In the future, the book club may be started up again, but it will not be run by me. If that happens, and it is quite likely to, I am sure you will find out about it and can join it if you wish to. :+)

Best wishes for a blessed homeschooling year. It was a joy to interact with you all.

Warmly,
Kate
