OK, some good stuff to share

Posted in August Events
As a homeschool mom y'all know I love something FREE! So, here you go:

Go here to register for a free Coke and Chick-fil-a sandwich (link from my bud Dawn in VA!)

This weekend at Lowe's they're having their free kids seminar - from 10:00 to 11:30. Go to lowes.com here - and then on the main dark blue banner go to "Project Center" and then "How to Clinics". A pop-up window will come up and you can register online. This week it's an Herb Planter. I think it's for ages 7 to 11 but I am totally planning on checking out how serious they are about the ages... LOL!

Starkville Library Story Time - Fall 2007

Just got this email from the SPL and wanted to share:

Greetings! I hope that you have all had a fabulous summer full of fun & reading (of course)!

I wanted to let you know that Tiny Tots and Preschool Story Hour will start on September 5th. Little Bit Olders will start the following week on September 12th. Besides a nice rest after a wonderful yet busy summer, the other reason for such a long break between the end of summer reading (the last day to bring your reading sheets is this Friday, August 3rd) and the start of our regular Wednesday programs is that vvvvv is now the Young Adult Librarian, and we are moving books, shelves, etc. to create a new young adult section ! Also, vvvvv will be attending a young adult librarian conference on September 5th and 6th.

Here is the Wednesday schedule:
9:30 a.m. ~ Tiny Tots - for little ones from birth up to 3 years old (starts Sept. 5th)
10 a.m. ~ Preschool Story Hour - for children ages 3 to 6 (starts Sept. 5th)
10 a.m. ~ Little Bit Olders - for children ages 6 up through 2nd grade (starts September 12th)

Looking forward to seeing you all! Please spread the word about the timetable! Thanks!

CARS being shown free at AMS August 24th

Posted in August Events
"Cars" begins at sunset on the lawn of Armstrong Middle School. Free admission. Bring your own picnic and lawn chairs. Sponsored by Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation, Armstrong Middle School, Weavexx, Northland Cable, and Video Magic 1.

** I would add that we went to the last one - and the Simpson's was being shown before the movie, which I personally consider to be exceedingly inappropriate for kids. So, please arrive at movie time if you are concerned about pre-show content.

I found this neat link online and wanted to share it. I love my ipod and use it a lot for downloading stories for the kids - and these look like lots of fun. From one blog I read they reported that you will only receive one email a week and they do not release email addresses.

Here's the information about Home School Radio Shows:

Our "Living Books for the Ears" newsletter brings you wonderful "old time radio" adaptations of  great books and historic stories, chosen especially for homeschooling families, each and every week -- and it's absolutely free.

These fully dramatized half hour audio programs are a terrific way to introduce your kids to classic "living books" and make history "come to life" in a whole new way. And there's no worries about what they are listening to -- these classic stories  originally aired on the radio back in the good old days of the 1940's and 1950's, so there's no bad language or other objectionable stuff... just exciting adventures, fascinating history, wholesome lessons and timeless values... all in great sound quality.

Sign up below and join our FREE weekly newsletter -- you'll receive a FREE "Living Books for the Ears" audio program each and every week. (Yes, it's really, really free - no kidding, no strings attached!) In fact, sign up today, and you'll INSTANTLY get a download link to your first "Living Book for the Ears" program -- HANS BRINKER AND THE SILVER SKATES! Give it a listen and see (or rather "hear") for yourself what wonderful shows these really are.

A phonics plug...

Posted in Resources
While I don't really want my blog to become a big fat add, I am feeling indulgent tonight. A friend in VA and I were emailing and she recommended this online phonics program - ClickN Read. Her son uses it and loves it, and I have decided to give it a try with my reader-to-be. We're using the trusty 100 EZ Lessons, but I really want my kids to have a strong phonics base as well as being a competent reader and it looks like it'll be perfect for that. I think it'll fit my child's learning style perfectly and I am really excited about giving it a try. I also read through some reviews and was very impressed:
Top Ten Reviews
Academic Superstore
Power to Learn (software reviews for teachers)

So, I took the plunge and bought it tonight. I won't wakte the kids up and make them start it tonight - but definately tomorrow... Anyway, since I recently purchased it I can earn a discount by adding a link to my oft-read blog. If you've read more than 3 of my blog entries you know how I feel about a deal - so I figured you wouldn't mind my indulgence. If you have any questions about how it's working for us -  leave me a comment and an email address - or email me (I think my address is on the sidebar) - and I'll be happy to let you know how it's going. If you decide to buy it - let me know and I can refer you and you get a good discount.

Visit ClickN READ Phonics for more infromation.

Anyone actually read this thing??

Seriously - anyone read this thing?!?! LOL!! I've been pretty slackery on the blog - I've been totally enjoying the summer, the heat, water, etc. I love summer here with the students (MSU types) gone and the freedom to eat anywhere after church and actually get a table. :)

Anyway - here are some cool things going on this summer that I would recommend looking into---

Pizza Hut Book It
Read books (you set and manage the goals as a homeschool mom) and get free pizzas. Very easy. Very fun. You can sign up online now so it's very easy.  Only K+ for the homeschool program.

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading
Read 8 books, fill out a few forms, get a free book. I will bet the "local" B&N won't participate - but take it to another and you'll get the hook up. While you are there (at another one - not here) get an educator's card for 20% off home school purchases. They honor the card here - they just won't give you one.

Also - Office Depot will give you a discount card as a HS mom - 5% off, which is minimal, but you also get good coupons. :) And - take in your old ink cartridges and you get a coupon for $3 off your next buy.

If you give a homeschooling mom a cookie

From the Well Trained Mind Message Boards:

If you give a homeschooling mom a cookie
By: Sher Birmingham

If you give a Homeschooling Mom a cookie, she'll want the recipe.

She will plan a complete unit study on the History of Cookies.

The family will take a field to a farm and see where we get eggs, milk and grain.

At home they will make butter out of milk.

The children will want to start grinding their own grain.

Mom will purchase a Bosch Universal Kitchen System.

She will remember she will need a new list of cookbooks.

So she will order An Introduction To Whole Grain Baking w/ CD, Desserts, The Cooking With Children CD, and Lunches & Snacks Cookbook by Sue Gregg, also Whole Foods for Kids to Cook.

Mom orders a 100 lb bag of wheat berries.

Now she will grind her own wheat grain into flour.

The children remember the farm field trip and knowing they can't possibly get a cow they beg for a few chickens.

So they take a trip to the library to research how to build a chicken coop and to how to care for chickens.

On the way out the door Mom sees the book, Chicken Tractor, by Andy Lee & Pat Foreman.

They stop by the Feed and Seed to pick up materials and ask where to purchase the chicks.

There the clerk tells them about eggs that can be incubated.

He sells them a book on hatching eggs, eggs, and incubator.

At home Mom and the younger children set up the incubator while Dad and the older children build the chicken tractor.

Back to the library to pick up gardening books and more books on chickens.

The oldest daughter now starts a business grinding flour for the her friend's families.

While her younger sisters are selling homemade cookies to their neighbors.

The boys have started building a new chicken tractor because they want more eggs for breakfast.

What about the cookie that started all this? The homeschooling mom's three year old ate it.

Happy Mothers Day!
