Aug. 9, 2006 - Little Itty bitty boy toys

Legos...I have a love/hate relationship with them.  Admittedly, they are a wonderful educational toy.  BUT THERE ARE SO MANY TINY PIECES EVERYWHERE!!

Truly, they are the only toy with many teeny tiny parts that I tolerate much longer than 30 seconds.  I detest junk toys.  Prizes from Kid's Church and VBS meet the garbage man soon after crossing the threshhold of our home.  But Legos, well...

Over the years, we have amassed quite a collection of them.  We have been the recipient of  large bins of them...we have even purchased them on occasion.  I now have a baby in the house and a bit of a dilemma.  So here is question for the cosmic void...do any of you have any great ideas on how to keep a lego collection from taking over your home?

The boys like to build creations, but are generally upset by the mere suggestion of tearing it apart and putting it back into the bin.  I have also indulged their lego compulsions on occasion and purchased "Lego kits."  Heaven help us if these kits were ever to be absorbed into the larger collection!  SO...any ideas on how to organize, keep tidy, keep "sets" together, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

that kind of depends on your housing situation. We have a sort of porch we use as a playroom. There, the two older ones can play and build and the baby isn't allowed out there unsupervised. If you have such a space, it can be a good refuge for older ones.

We have a bunch of K'Nex and they come in nice containers that the children can't open (hehe). If you got a similar box, you could package of legos and store them there, and only get them out when the children are going to play with them. Do you have a spot you can designate to put creations up out of reach?

My son is that way with his train tracks, so we finally got him a train table. He can construct to his heart's content and doesn't have to put them away at the end of the day. They don't pose the choking hazard that legos do, though.

Hey, you mentioned that your hubby could do power point presentations. I found someone (jaybird) to do the first one, but I need a second one (I'm being asked to speak a lot, lately). How much would he charge to make one for me? Can he do it from start to finish, and I am on a TOTAL budget, so the less expensive the better. :-)

For my boys it's Legos, K'Nex and Magnetix.

for the girls it's baby doll accessories, Barbie clothes and Polly Pockets!

I so agree with you. Who in the world thought "Happy Meal" toys were a good idea? AHHHH! But LEGOS are a completely different matter. My boys love them. May obsessed would be a better term. :o) They play with them every day. I am sure that I could get rid of every other toy they own and they would be fine. Legos become cars, army guys, towns, LOTR action figures, whatever you want. Now bear in mind that they own large quanities of all the toys I listed above.

We have so many of them that there isn't really a way to keep them organized, only contained. We keep them all in a really big footlocker that is easy to put even things that are built in and keeps them safe.

Thanks for visiting my site.

Like I mentioned on my WFMW maybe putting them in those clear zipper bags comfortors, and linens come in would help. I get them from people I know who make the purchases, or you might could check with the stores for extras.

Let me know when you discover the magic formula, you will make millions :) The best I can do is have them build in their room on a sheet which works OK for the older boys, but the younger ones love to show off, fly around, or blow up their creations leaving a mess EVERYWHERE. When I am frustrated they are swept or vacuumed up. If I am in a good mood I will sort them out. Ultimately, I have resigned myself to accepting that they are always going to be a problem.
