When You're A Mom...
and the power goes out, what do you do? Grab a light saber, of course. I couldn't find a flashlight and our bathroom has no windows- and a mom's gotta go when a mom's gotta go. The blue light was kind of soothing, but I could have done without the saber sound effects. LOL!

Awesome Educational Website
I'll try to get this link added to my own website soon, but I changed computers quite awhile ago and my IT guy (i.e. my husband) hasn't loaded the website editing software yet. LOL!
Anyway, I'm not sure who shared this website with me, but it has a lot of really exciting links to educational games. These are very sophisticated, interactive games designed primarily for non-profit organizations such as museums and schools.
Check it out: Eduweb

The More Things Change...
The topic of our society's ongoing decline recently came up, and while I agree that most folks are far from behaving in a Godly manner and we all could probably use an improvement of our standards, I don' think this is a recent development.
Our's societies' behavior hasn't changed as much as you think:
The Bolter- Book Review
(caution- some passages would get an "R")
The history of dress, note in the French Revolution and Empire periods, women's garments were often translucent- yeah, see through. Note the low cut of the dresses at Napoleon's coronation.
History of Dress
I wish I could find a better reference. When I studied this subject in college, we learned that during various periods of time different body parts were considered more or less attractive and dress was designed to feature the desired part of the body. There were periods when the bosom was completely revealed and other times when sheer fabrics were used. So while today's fashions are immodest- no argument there, I don't think the desire of humans to act and dress immodestly is so far changed from the past. It's just that there's not a lot of focus on modesty and moral practices in most history classes so we assume what we don't know about must not have existed.

Christian Book Distributors Has Taken Some New Markdowns
I was browsing the "WOW" deals today and noticed that there are several new items as well as substantial price decreases for a few books that have been on the "WOW' list for quite awhile. There are some nice (and educational) children's books that are available for $.99.
Fat Proof Your Kids was on sale, as was America the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates and Elizabethan England by Laura Marvel. The price on Charles Dickens and Friends has been reduced and Bibleman and Ribbets video sets have been substantially discounted.

Microsoft Development Software and Free Kids' Courses
If you visit the Microsoft website, not only can you get a free version of their Visual Studios Express software but you can also download a complete set of programming courses for children including teaching materials and printables!
You know this means I'm going to have to learn more about my computer than I ever wanted to, all for the sake of education.

Another Non-School Day aka Nature in All its Gory
Caution- this is gross and involves "the circle of life" in nature.
So, the kids are spending the night at grandma's and I call to hear how their day has gone and say "good-night." Oldest DS says, "Guess what!" I say, "What?" assuming he's going to tell me about the new swingset that I already knew about. OH NO, never assume ladies....
"One of our ducks is gone because a snapping turtle bit it's head off!" Yup, nature at it's finest. Thankfully no one actually witnessed said snapping, though they did see what was left of the duck later and gave it a "proper" burial. Then DS shares that later one of the other ducks was still tooling about the pond when it squawked and went running/flapping across the water. Apparently this duck had an encounter with our friend Snappy too but faired better than it's sibling, managing to keep its head. DS thought that was just hilarious to watch. All the ducks are now sticking close to their private "pool" and away from the pond. Anyone for turtle soup?
Oh but it gets BETTER, oh yeah! Fair warning- this one's a stomach turner.
Grandma had agreed to allow the kids to hold a baby robin when they came over because she knew where a nest was to be found. They were understandably excited. So, the kids are playing outside and grandma hears the parent birds making a fuss. She thinks one of the babes has fallen out of the nest and grandma and all three kids go over to investigate... just in time to see a startled snake spit out the last baby and slither away! Eeeewwwwww! The other two babies were long gone. I guess snakes are shy when eating.
Thus concludes homeschool science for the firm-of-constitution this week.

28 Freebies offered over the next 7 weekdays at Currclick

I've already downloaded one item that had been on my wishlist, making a visit to the site well worth my time!
ETA: I'm bumping this up again because there are some really great finds! Again I was able to get several items that had been on my wishlist. I've also taken advantage of the "recession" sale to get some items. I'm trying to keep spending down, but it's nice to be able to support vendors that I like AND get a good deal.

One of My Favorite Devotionals-
Many folks have recommended this devotional, and I think I have in the past as well, but it deserves mentioning again:
Streams in the Desert
This link indicates that the featured devotion is for November, but it was actually the May 10th entry in my hardcover copy. If you click "next" you can continue to read the devotions in order.

Currclick Is Having a Sale!
As if the Bookcloseouts sale wasn't enough temptation for me! I'm an affiliate of both BCO and Currclick and they are both having great sales right now. I posted about the BCO sale earlier (and have placed my order).
Here's the details for Currclick:
It's a "Spring Back From the Recession" Sale taking place now through May 15th with discounts up to 75% off on select items. Several items that had been on my wishlist were actually on sale, so be sure to take a look. Tip: If you want to sort sale items by price, just used advanced search and do price based searches in $5 increments (more than this becomes cumbersome). So for instance you can search for items priced "0-$5" and sort by price, then do "$5-10", etc.

Happy browsing.
