Mulberries Galore

Posted in Ranch Shekinah

When we first moved here, almost a decade ago, we had no idea that the property had fruit trees

and berries growing abundantly.  It has been a pleasant surprise as we have discovered, one by one,

what treasures grow here.

This is one of our mulberry trees.  Mulberries look like blackberries when they are ripe.

We have found these Mulberry trees growing everywhere. There is one growing over the

fence in the front horse pasture; another one growing right next to the chicken coop (the chickens

seem to love this sweet treat as they drop from the tree); and there are several that hang over our driveway, dropping their treasures on to the black pavement.  But we have discovered most of these

Mulberry trees when trail riding.

They are easy to harvest.  Take a brown bag, and then just slide your fingers over the branches.

They fall off that easy.

My oldest daughter, Becky, made me some jam made from these.  Delicious!

I have never seen mulberries before, but they do look just like blackberries. Do they taste like them too?
I bet the jam is delicious.

We had mulberry trees growing up in our pastures. I remember the first time we found them and brought the home. My mom didn't know what they were, and said, "Feed them to the chickens first!" to make sure they weren't poisonous. =) My grandmother knew exactly what they were and every summer we would go up and pick handfuls for our snacks. I'm missing them....

What a wonderful treasure you have! It's so much more fun when you can harvest your own rather than get them at the grocery store. Enjoy the delicious fruit of your labors!

Oh, Toni, they look delicious!! Are they tart or sweet? I always just 'pictured' mulberries as being a little on the tart side (aren't we all, lol!). And the jam... I'm going to make apple jelly here within the next week or so. I love homemade jams and jellies!

Thanks for sharing, and have a lovely weekend!

p.s. I *love* your property! We are looking for some of our own. Can't wait to find it! :)

OK, so what are mulberries good for? LOL
I actually found a cherry tree this week, hanging over my DS's property. I had to put my life in my hand and climb to the roof of his shed to pick them, but they are so good!

Ohhhh YUMMMMMMMY . Now that is one thing we don't have on our homestead. I have never had a mulberry either. Do they taste like a blackberry ? We have blackberries here. [0= But they don't grow like they do in the Great Seattle area. I LOVE your pics. I took a bunch of pics of what is happening here. ( I haven't posted them ...yet. [0= )

I love that last photo, so artistic! I never thought of eating mulberries. Our tree is hard to get to so the birds get them.

Never tried a mulberry before but they look delicious! Now I know what they are talking about in the old nursery rhyme song "Here we go 'round the mulberry bush" *grin*.

Hopefully in three years. Our youngest is 17 and our next-youngest is 19. We want to make sure they are through college and "established" before "abandoning" them for the boondocks. LOL
Until then my DH hopes to spend about 80/20 over there in the spring/summer/fall and 20/40 in the winter. I will go when I can. (I wrote very well over there--no other distractions).

We have those trees, too. It's just amazing how the birds seem to plant them all over the place for us! We've had to take out some of the male non-bearing ones, as there are just so many! And I love how huge the berries are. So fun that you have them, too.

Last year our Mulberry trees got froze out. They are trying to make a comeback but they los alot of their limbs. Ours are usually ripe in the spring here. Right now we are getting peaches and apples. Pears will be in about a month.

About Me

Welcome to our ranch! Come, sit on our porch, have some tea, and stay a while. Were going to have a lot of fun chatting. Bring the kids, too, as we've got lots of room to play, horses to ride, cats and kitties to cuddle, gentle dogs to pet, and baby chickens to look at and hold. We can take trail rides around the alfalfa field, wade through the creek, take a paddle boat to the island on the lake, go fishing, or explore the Black Walnut Forest. There's no hurry around here. We'll just meander about and maybe even pack a picnic basket - Ranch Shekinah is abounding with Mulberry trees, wild blackberries and raspberries, an orchard of apple trees, and a herb garden.
